Kia Ora Y7 and welcome to your English course page for 2020. My name is Mrs. (Rajesh) Joshi and I will be your teacher of English this year. I was born and brought up in India. I moved to New Zealand about six years back.
This page is where you will find all the necessary information required for your English course. All tasks, activities and assessments will be placed here as well as additional lesson notes and resources. Please make it a habit to check this page at the start of each week. This will ensure that you are aware of any expectations we may have of you at that time.

Kia Ora Y7. Our context for Term 1 is ‘Turangawaewae: My Place To Stand Here at MHJC.’ This week, we will unfold the context. I will start by discussing ‘Great Ako’ with you. We will work closely with Art & Global Studies. We will be looking at different texts about identity, whanau, culture, friendship etc.
Our focus this term is ‘Visual Language.’ We will learn about different aspects of Visual Language such as Dominant image, Colour, Texture, Shape, Symbolism, Lettering / Font, Proportion, Layout, Rule of Thirds, Negative space, Logo etc. and apply them in our badge. You will apply (most of these) in the personal badge (Static Image) that you will create working collaboratively with Art & Global Studies.
Starting with identity, I want you to think about yourself; particularly your name. We will do a few class activities related to names. You may think of the following:

-Which language does your name come from?
-What does your name mean?
-Why were you given this name?
-If given a chance, would you like to change your name? What name would you choose and why?

Kia Ora Class. Continuing with our context, this week, we are discussing ‘Culture’. What makes our culture: food, languages, religion, clothes, customs, traditions, celebrations, values & beliefs etc. Also, this week, we will start learning about ‘Visual Language.’ We will look at some Maori and other symbols.
This week, you will have your easTTle Writing test which will be done both in English & Global Studies’ classes.

LOCKDOWN MEMOIR
You are home during the lockdown. This long stay at home will be memorable for a long time. You may have been doing things which you have not done before or for a long time. Also, you may have learnt a new hobby or a life-skill. You may have been bored at times and doing something very exciting at other times. You may have realised that it is not the THINGS but PEOPLE who have the power to make you happy or sad. You may have learnt the importance of family, friends, grandparents, relatives, school, teachers and essential workers.
I hope you will value a hug, a smile, a compliment, a few kind words, a cheerful ‘Kia Ora/Howdy’ much more than you did in the past.

Kia Ora Class. This week, you will write the story of your comic. Think about different characters of your comic and their names. Next, think about what your characters do in your story and how they are related with each other.
Think of a good title for your story and write it on a Google doc. Think about how you will make your story funny/interesting. Remember, your comic is about ‘LOCKDOWN.’ You will upload your story on Google Classroom once it is done.

Term 2 (Week9- 8th-12th June 2020)
Kia Ora Y7. This week, we move over to speeches. Last week, I asked you to think of certain topics for speech that you are passionate about. This week, we will study and discuss what goes into an effective speech. You will plan your speech using the given planning template. You will write your speech on a Google doc. Remember it has to be your own speech. You will write it YOURSELF. Have a look at the speech exemplars under resources though you need to have your own ideas for your speech. You will present your speeches as your Assessment for Term 3.
You are required to construct and deliver an oral presentation of about 2 to 4 minutes in a formal setting. You can choose your own topic but the subject of your presentation could also be from the following:
a theme studied in class
a topical issue that arises from wide reading
something related with the context of Term 1 or Term
Collaboration: The speech topic can be your own choice OR from what you have learnt in Term 1 or 2 in Global Studies, P.E./Health, Science, Math. Speak to your different Learning Areas' teachers to see if you can pick a topic from there. We will be working closely with Global Studies, Science and Maths. Global Studies will guide you to understand and apply good research skills to identify and use reliable sources/ resources for your speech. Science/Math will help you understand some of the questions related with Covid-19 which you could use as your speech topic.

This is Maori Language week. We are observing “Māori Language Moment” at 12pm on Monday 14th September to commemorate the actual time and day in 1972, when 30,000 signatures were delivered to Parliament calling for Te Reo Māori to be taught in schools. Also we will look at the list of 365 Maori words. Our aim is to learn at least one word a day. We will start our English sessions with a waiata.
