Please read through the DEEP descriptions below for 2025. The DEEP courses are listed in Terms, by category (Discovery, Enrichment, Essentials, Passions, Sports and Learning Advisors), and then by alphabetical order.

Please note that courses with charges are only available to students who have paid their compulsory fees and previous DEEP fees.

Monday

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Beginners Electronics (BELE1)

Over the span of a few exciting weeks, participants will dive into the fundamentals of electronics. From understanding circuitry to crafting your own electronic creations, this course provides a dynamic introduction to the captivating world of electronics.

Beginners Keyboard (BKEY1)

Discovery for those that haven't played keyboard before, this deep goes over the basics of playing keyboard. You will learn to read and play music on the keyboard as well as chords and songs.

Disney Appreciation (DSAP1)

Explore the timeless stories, unforgettable characters, and the enduring magic that has captivated generations. Whether you're a lifelong fan or just beginning your Disney journey, this class is sure to spark your imagination and leave you feeling enchanted.

Fake News (FAKE1)

This class will investigate how false or misleading information can spread through news outlets and social media. We will analyse real-world examples of current events where claims are made that contradict widely accepted scientific evidence. This DEEP aims to empower students to become discerning consumers of information and navigate the complexities of the modern media landscape.

Financial Literacy (FLIT1)

Develop financial literacy such as budgeting, investments etc through this DEEP.

Healthy Living (HLIV1)

Try out a new change in lifestyle through healthy eating, learning the benefits of positive thinking, creating an healthy awareness each month.

Mahjong (MAMT1)

In this DEEP, you will learn how to play mahjong, one of Chinese people’s favourite pastimes. You will learn the basic strategies on how to play mahjong through attacking and defending from other players and have fun playing against each other.

Māori Games (MAOG1)

No prior experience needed - just bring your enthusiasm and be ready to have fun! Learn to play a range of Māori games and share in the culture through this DEEP.

Nature of Science (NOSC1)

Through this DEEP, students will learn what science is and how scientists work, develop the skills, and values to build a foundation for understanding the world, and appreciate that while scientific knowledge is durable, it is also constantly re-evaluated in the light of new evidence, etc.

Paper Quilling (PQUI1)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Quilling is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is rolled, looped, curled, twisted, and otherwise manipulated to create shapes that make up designs to decorate greetings cards, pictures, boxes, eggs, and to make models, jewelry, mobiles, etc. Come along and join this DEEP session to learn more about this ART form.

Scientific Testing (SCIT1)

If you are a year 7 or 8 science enthusiast and like testing experiments to see if they work and like modifying, then this is for you.

Website Development (WEBD1)

Would you like to develop the art of creating your own website? Then this DEEP is for you.

World Geography (WGEO1)

This DEEP will improve your understanding of geography.

Advanced Chess (ACHE1)

Take your chess skills to the next level in Advanced Chess DEEP. Perfect for players who have mastered the basics. Whether you're preparing for tournaments to represent MHJC, or just looking to enhance your strategic thinking, this course will help you become a formidable player on the board.

Baking (BAKT1)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
Do you have a sweet tooth and love to bake? Enrol in baking and learn how to make delicious cookies and cakes. Sweet treats and good eats in the kitchen! Payment for this class needs to be made before class starts. As an outcome, you will be able to take recipes home to make for your family.

Book Club (BCLU1)

Are you an avid reader? Come along to book club to share and discuss the books that you have read, and to be around other passionate readers like yourself.

Painting (PNTG1)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
If you are a keen artist and painter, or are interested in art and would like to develop your skills with a brush, join Painting DEEP.

The UFO Myth (UFOM1)

This class will examine the myth of unidentified flying objects using a critical thinking lens.

Sports

Beginners Boys Football (BFOT1)

This fun DEEP for boys is designed for anybody that is new to football and would like to learn the game, its rules and the skills to improve at the sport.

Les Mills for Girls (LMFG1)

Improve your physical and mental health through this fitness program. This program is only for girls.

Street Hockey (STHO1)

This DEEP will let your experience and learn all about street hockey. Street hockey is a fast paced small sided game social game that is played by youth on streets all over the world, it is similar to ice hockey and roller hockey but played on concrete. You will participate in modified games that develop your overall hockey ability. The aim of this tournament is to increase the amount of students interested in hockey at MHJC.

PRE-SELECTED - this DEEP is for students that have been selected ONLY.

Yoga and Pilates (YOGA1)

A requirement for this class is that you bring your own mat. Ready to try something different that will make you feel calmer, more focused, and stronger? We will be practising postures that will test your mental and physical strength and flexibility, along with breathing exercises and meditation which will help centre and ground your body, mind and spirit.

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Beginners Chess (BCHE1)

Have you watched other people play Chess, and wanted to get involved but don't know how to play? This DEEP is perfect for you! Learn the basics of Chess and test out your new skills against other players. No prior experience required!

Beginners Guitar (GUIT1)

This DEEP is for students who would like to learn to play guitar. You can also join the DEEP if you are at the early stages of playing the instrument.

Conservation (CONS1)

Learn how to look after our unique plants and animals in Aotearoa New Zealand, including how to attract native birds and lizards into your garden and how to take great photos of animals and plants.

Diamond Painting (DPAN1)

There is a charge of $15 for this course.
A mix between paint by numbers and cross stitch, diamond painting has emerged in the last few years as a way to create 'masterpieces' by following a printed canvas and placing beads. This is a quiet, independent and reflective craft, where accuracy and organisation will lead to success. There is a $15 charge for the kit.

Felting (FELT1)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Unleash your creativity in our Felting DEEP course! Sculpt adorable key-rings, design vibrant jewellery, or craft cozy home décor – all through the wonder of felting. No experience needed, just bring your imagination and have a blast!

Fun with Coordinates (FWCO1)

Draw different characters using coordinates. Learn to use coordinate points on a graph paper. Colour your character once finished.

Learn to Perform Magic! (MAGI1)

Have you ever been amazed by a magician's sleight of hand? Now's your chance to learn the secrets! This exciting course will teach you the fundamentals of magic, from simple card tricks to mind-blowing illusions. Develop your dexterity, creativity, and stage presence as you learn to perform captivating magic for your friends and family.

Mahjong (MAHT1)

In this DEEP, you will learn how to play mahjong, one of Chinese people’s favourite pastimes. You will learn the basic strategies on how to play mahjong through attacking and defending from other players and have fun playing against each other.

Pencil Sketching (PSKT1)

Do you like sketching? Interested in learning how to create new drawings with just pencil. Come join this DEEP.

Scrabble (SCRA1)

Word Power Up! Join our Scrabble Club and become a board game champion! Learn strategies, build vocabulary, and sharpen your mind – all in a fun, social setting. Beginners welcome, all you need is a love of words and a thirst for friendly competition!

Shapes Through Nature (SHAP1)

Through this DEEP we will be looking at the different shapes in nature and how nature has influenced geometry.

Whānau Art (WART1)

Have the opportunity to come and make some art for your central Whānau space. There will be opportunities for independent and group tasks throughout the term and lots of different media.

Word Power (WPOW1)

Increase your word power by completing crosswords, mix and match games for words and their meanings, word finds and enter a Spelling Bee.

Dark Tourist (DTOU1)

In The Traveller’s Guide to Dark Tourism, we delve into what it means to be a dark tourist; uncover the ethics of such travel, including which destinations serve to educate and inform, as well as the dos and don’ts of visiting sites with sinister pasts. Elsewhere, explore some of the most significant sites to visit, from places that have been shaped by disasters – both natural and man-made – and battlefields of the world’s defining wars, to the living legacy of Europe’s recent history behind the Iron Curtain or the tombs and mausoleums of the most important leaders and revolutionaries. Come and enjoy the darker side of our everyday.

Cook Island Language and Dance (CIDA1)

Interested in learning the Reo (language) of the Cook Islands and experiencing the fun and unique dance style of Hula? This deep will teach you all about the Cook Island culture!

Country Line Dancing with Makenzee! (CDAN1)

Makenzee’s back from the U.S. and ready to get you stepping, sliding, and stomping to some of the hottest viral country line dances on TikTok! Whether you're a total beginner or already have some moves, come join the fun, get fit, and dance like nobody’s watching! Yeehaw! 🎶💃

Eco Warrior (ECOW1)

Are you concerned about climate change and our environment? Would you like to learn about protecting our planet and becoming a change maker and making a positive difference to our school, community, city, country and planet? In this DEEP we will look at recycling, pest control, plant protection and learning about positive ways to make a difference to where we live. You will have the opportunity to be empowered to create ideas to make a positive change. This DEEP will also involve the current Enviro Council students and if you are passionate and contribute to this DEEP you will have an opportunity to join this School Council. This DEEP may involve some small field trips. We need a dedicated team to move us in the right direction. Please only apply if you think this DEEP suits your passion for the environment.

Filipino Culture & Language (FCUL1)

In Auckland and MHJC, we have a growing and vibrant Filipino community. This DEEP aims to let us learn more about the Filipino culture, promoting cross-cultural understanding and collaboration. We also will study basic Tagalog while gaining insights into historical, social, and artistic aspects of the Filipino culture. After all, the Philippines is a significant trading partner for New Zealand, so this will surely open more doors for our tamariki in the future such as better business relationships and opportunities.

MIT App Inventor (MITA1)

You will need a Windows or Mac for this DEEP. MIT App Inventor is a visual programming environment that allows you to build fully functional apps for smartphones and tablets. You will be able to use blocks-based coding programs. So, if you want to move from technology consumption to technology creation then this DEEP is the right one for you.

Sports

Advanced Football (AFOT1)

This is a course for our school sports team members. Boots and shin pads are required. In this course you will be specifically training to support the needs and demands of your chosen sport. This DEEP will extend your capacity to express yourself physically and mentally at a high level of sports performance. This is an Enrichment DEEP course and will involve physical challenges that will push the body.

Advanced Running (ARUN1)

This is open to capable students who are wanting to improve their distance running and overall fitness. You need to be able to run 2km in order to select this DEEP. Finally, you need the internal motivation to develop a personalised distance running goal and you will then spend the term working towards achieving this.

Badminton (BADB1)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Are you interested in Badminton? Then this is for you! Come and develop your skills, learn the game, and perfect your shot! Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament level to represent the school are possible.

Beginners Girls Football (GFOT1)

This fun DEEP for girls is designed for anybody that is new to football and would like to learn the game, its rules and the skills to improve at the sport.

Girls Beginners Netball (GNET1)

This DEEP is for girls that are new to netball and would like to learn the game, its rules and the skills to improve at the sport.

Martial Arts and Self Defence (MASD1)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
In this DEEP you will learn the skills and art of Self Defence through Martial Arts.

Asian Animation Appreciation (ASAN1)

To explore and embrace the cultural and universal moral values portrayed in Asian animations.

Beginners Afrikaans (BAFR1)

Afrikaans is one of the many languages spoken in South Africa. If you would like to learn to speak some basic Afrikaans while having fun... then this class is for you. From introducing yourself, to learning words, phrases and sentences. Come and join the fun while learning to speak a new language!

Beginners German (BGER1)

If you're ready for another language challenge, why not try German? This is a basic beginners class for those who don't know any German at all. You will learn a little about Germany, and basics in the German language.

Beginners Korean (BKOR1)

Unlock the world of K-Pop, K-dramas, and Korean culture with our Beginner's Korean course! Learn the basics of Hangul (the Korean alphabet), master essential greetings and phrases, and build a foundation for conversation. No prior experience needed! This interactive course will have you saying ""안녕하세요!"" (Hello!) in no time.

Cartoon Drawing (CDRW1)

Learn or practice your cartoon drawing through this DEEP. Practice your technique and look at different drawings for inspiration.

Clay Creations (CLCR1)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
This class would combine clay crafting with food design. Students would be taught techniques of using polymer clay to create realistic looking miniature food. These can be turned into jewellery as a great gift idea. A small fee to cover the cost of materials would apply.

Dumbledore's Army (DARM1)

Delve DEEP into the magical world of Harry Potter. We'll explore the captivating stories, analyse complex characters, and uncover the hidden meanings behind the beloved books.

Hour of Code (HOFC1)

The Hour of Code is an introduction to computer science through fun activities and videos for learners of all skill levels. If you want to learn how to code in Scratch, JavaScript, Python and more then this DEEP is the right one for you.

Mindful Walking (WALK1)

De-stress and reconnect with nature in Mindful Walking DEEP. Learn simple techniques to transform your daily walks into calming journeys. Explore your local environment with fresh eyes, appreciate the sights and sounds, and find peace in the present moment. Boost focus, reduce anxiety, and return to class feeling refreshed and ready to learn! Lace up your shoes and join us for a walk on the mindful side.

Mysterious Monsters (MYMO1)

This course will explore this history and psychology behind sightings of mysterious creatures around the world, from Bigfoot and Mothman to the Loch Ness Monster. New Zealand also has has its fair share of mystery creatures from the patupaiarehe (tiny fairy beings from Maori folklore) to sightings of the ‘Coromandel Man’ (New Zealand’s Bigfoot), big cat reports and sightings of giant alligators in the Waikato River during the latter 1800s. What evidence is there to support the existence of these mystery creatures. THIS IS A COURSE IN CRITICAL THINKING AND RULES OF EVIDENCE. It is not a course in why these creatures exist - instead it asks the question: 'Why do so many people believe in monsters in the absence of compelling scientific evidence?

Online Chess (OCHE1)

Online Chess DEEP introduces you to the exciting world of online chess. Learn the fundamentals of the game, develop strategies, and challenge players from around the world. Improve your critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills all while having fun! This course is perfect for beginners and those looking to sharpen their chess skills online.

Origami (ORIG1)

Do you like getting creative with your hands? If so, come to this DEEP and learn how to make lanterns, origami, paper sculpturing, kites, and so on.

Pencil Sketching (PSKH1)

Do you like sketching? Interested in learning how to create new drawings with just pencil. Come join this DEEP.

Sign Language (SIGN1)

Through this DEEP you will be learning the third official language of New Zealand - NZSL.

STOP Motion Animation (STOP1)

Are you interested in animation? Through this course you will be using the Stop motion program to create animation movies. You will be required by the teacher to use your phones or other relevant devices.

Technical Design and Drawing (TDES1)

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of technical drawing Learn how to create accurate and detailed designs for architecture, engineering, and product development. Perfect for aspiring designers, architects, and engineers who want to develop the skills needed to bring their ideas to life.

Trivia (TRIV1)

Come along to Trivia DEEP to test out your general knowledge and put yourself up against others! Learn trivia from around our world and through time.

Book vs Film (BOVF1)

Do you have a passion for good books or films? A popular book will be read to you as a class, then we will watch the film based on that book and discuss the differences and what is better.

Creative Writing (CREW1)

Develop your creative writing skills and share your ideas with others in this DEEP. Craft captivating characters, weave suspenseful plots, and master the art of description. Whether you dream of writing fantasy epics or realistic fiction, this course provides a supportive environment to explore your voice and bring your stories to life.

Kapa Haka (KAPA1)

You will look and learn the different forms of performing arts that are involved with kapa haka and have a better understanding of the items performed on the stage eg: haka, moteatea, waiata tira, poi, waiata aringa. You will be working towards performing at events both within and outside of school - including Polyfest.

Science and Supernatural (SCIS1)

We will evaluate claims of the supernatural and paranormal within a framework of mainstream science and critical thinking. Topics will range from claims of demonic possession to reincarnation.

Viral TikTok Dance Class with Makenzee!! (VTIK1)

Love TikTok dances? Now’s your chance to learn the latest trending moves and dance like a pro! High-energy routines with catchy choreography, this class is all about having fun, getting active, and mastering those must-know viral dances. Bring your energy and let’s go! 🎶✨

Beginner Running (BRUN1)

This DEEP is for students that wish to improve their fitness and ability to run over longer distances. This is open to all students, meaning you do not have to be an advanced runner, but you must be committed to improving each week.

Bike Ambassador (BIKE1)

MHJC with MHP has a state of the art bike track and bike pump track, which is situated on the bottom of our field. We are aiming to increase the amount of efficient and safe bike riders in both schools and to further this with an escalation in the amount of students and community members using bikes as a safe and viable form of transport. With this bike track and school wide emphasis on biking we are hopeful of the upsurge in bike riders MHJC is looking to develop student bike ambassadors to assist with this school wide goal. The MHJC Bike Ambassador is a strong Leadership role with the responsibility of promoting biking to our community and ensuring that others are safe and making this activity fun. The other role involves supervising the bike track users and ensuring everyone's safety. You need to be a competent and experienced bike rider and willing to learn new skills and want to be a responsible leader. This DEEP is mainly practical based.
