Please read through the DEEP descriptions below for 2024. The DEEP courses are listed in Terms, by category (Discovery, Enrichment, Essentials, Passions, Sports and Learning Advisors), and then by alphabetical order.

Please note that courses with charges are only available to students who have paid their compulsory fees and previous DEEP fees.

Monday

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Beginners Chinese (BCHI2)

Embark on a linguistic journey with Beginners Chinese. Learn fundamental language skills such as pronunciation, basic vocabulary, and simple sentence structures. Participants will gain a foundation in the Chinese language and culture, setting the stage for further exploration and communication in one of the world's most spoken languages.

Conservation (CONS2)

Learn how to look after our unique plants and animals in Aotearoa New Zealand, including how to attract native birds and lizards into your garden and how to take great photos of animals and plants.

Diamond Painting (DPAN2)

There is a charge of $15 for this course.
A mix between paint by numbers and cross stitch, diamond painting has emerged in the last few years as a way to create 'masterpieces' by following a printed canvas and placing beads. This is a quiet, independent and reflective craft, where accuracy and organisation will lead to success. There is a $15 charge for the kit.

Electrical Wiring (ELWI2)

Want to understand the magic behind your gadgets? This DEEP dives into the world of electrical wiring. Learn the basics of how houses are powered, explore different electrical components, and get a head start in physics if that is your interest.

Healthy Living (HLIV2)

Try out a new change in lifestyle through healthy eating, learning the benefits of positive thinking, and creating healthy awareness.

Hour of Code (HOFC2)

The Hour of Code is an introduction to computer science through fun activities and videos for learners of all skill levels. If you want to learn how to code in Scratch, JavaScript, Python and more then this DEEP is the right one for you.

Mahjong (MAHJ2)

In this DEEP, you will learn how to play mahjong, one of Chinese people’s favourite pastimes. You will learn the basic strategies on how to play mahjong through attacking and defending from other players and have fun playing against each other.

Mysterious Monsters (MYMO2)

"This course will explore this history and psychology behind sightings of mysterious creatures around the world, from Bigfoot and Mothman to the Loch Ness Monster. New Zealand also has has its fair share of mystery creatures from the patupaiarehe (tiny fairy beings from Maori folklore) to sightings of the ‘Coromandel Man’ (New Zealand’s Bigfoot), big cat reports and sightings of giant alligators in the Waikato River during the latter 1800s. What evidence is there to support the existence of these mystery creatures. THIS IS A COURSE IN CRITICAL THINKING AND RULES OF EVIDENCE. It is not a course in why these creatures exist - instead it asks the question: 'Why do so many people believe in monsters in the absence of compelling scientific evidence?'

Painting (PATN2)

There is a charge of $5 for this course.
Unleash your creativity through painting. Explore various painting techniques, colour theory, and composition. From mastering brush strokes to expressing personal narratives on canvas, discover your unique artistic voice and develop a lifelong love for painting.

Still Life Art (STIL2)

Come explore the world of still life. Still life involves creating art of inanimate objects from natural or man made world. You will be using oil pastels for this.

Tournament of Minds (TOMI2)

If you think outside the square, love to solve demanding and open-ended challenges then TOM is for you. Tournament of Minds is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way.

Trivia (TRIV2)

Come along to Trivia DEEP to test out your general knowledge and put yourself up against others! Learn trivia from around our world and through time.

Enrichment
Enrichment courses are designed for students who have found and want to continue to grow an area of strength. Some enrichment courses require a commitment for more than one Term. Please read the course descriptions for details.
Figures That Influenced History (FHIS2)

Come along to this DEEP session if you are passionate about learning about history and the importance of several figures that have changed the world we live in.

Production Leads (PROL2)

All leads (people with lines) in the 2024 Production need to take this deep to supplement rehearsal. We will be rehearsing scenes and learning lines. The outcome is performing in the school production.

Science Badges (SCIB2)

There is a charge of $6 for this course.
Allows students to gain science badges. There is a cost of $6 per badge + pp. An opportunity for enrichment of sciences in the real world. They will need to be adept at communicating in Science - suits gifted learners

MHJC Way - 7M1 Mountains (MHJM2)

This is a compulsory DEEP for all Year 7 students. This course would introduce students to the MHJC way such as E-learning, Holistic report, MHJC Vision etc.

Baking (BAKT2)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
Do you have a sweet tooth and love to bake? Enrol in baking and learn how to make delicious cookies and cakes. Sweet treats and good eats in the kitchen! Payment for this class needs to be made before class starts. As an outcome, you will be able to take recipes home to make for your family.

Book vs Film Year 7/8 (BOVF2)

Do you have a passion for good books or films? You will read a popular book, then we will watch the film based on that book and discuss the similarities & differences between the two.

Pasifika Dance (PASD2)

If you want to learn a range of Pasifika dances, then this is the deep for you!

Production Band (PBAN2)

This DEEP is only for those that have been selected to perform as a band member in this year's school production: Shrek the Musical.

Sudoku (SUDO2)

Do you enjoy solving Sudoku? Would you like how to learn to solve these puzzles? Then this is the DEEP for you.

Werewolves (WERE2)

Werewolves is more than a drama game - it is a dynamic learning experience that promotes critical thinking, communication, and social-emotional well-being in a fun and engaging environment. Sign up and transform into strategic thinkers, confident communicators and skilled actors!

Sports

Basketball (BBAS2)

This course is open to all players and caters to the learn skills to be a basketball player. Come and enjoy learning and practicing your basketball skills in a fun, social environment.

Beginners Volleyball (BVOL2)

Volleyball is a great social sport to play at family and friend gatherings. Join this class if you are keen to learn the rules and improve your skills.

Tuesday

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Asian Animation Appreciation (ANAP2)

In this DEEP you will explore and embrace the cultural and universal moral values portrayed in Asian animations. You will also learn to connect these values to our school values of Pono, Awhinatanga and Whakamana, and try to make practical applications of them to improve ourselves.

Beginners Chess (BCHE2)

Are you wanting to learn how to play Chess or have a friendly game of Chess with your friends? In this DEEP you will do just that. You will learn the strategy and tactics behind the game and master the different moves of play.

Beginners Debating (BDEB2)

Improve your poise, self-confidence, speech skills and team-player skills with this DEEP.

Financial Literacy (FLIT2)

Develop financial literacy such as budgeting, investments etc through this DEEP.

Mahjong (MAHJ2)

Nature of Science (NOSC2)

Through this DEEP, students will learn what science is and how scientists work, develop the skills, and values to build a foundation for understanding the world, and appreciate that while scientific knowledge is durable, it is also constantly re-evaluated in the light of new evidence, etc.

Paper Quilling (PQUI2)

Quilling is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is rolled, looped, curled, twisted, and otherwise manipulated to create shapes that make up designs to decorate greetings cards, pictures, boxes, eggs, and to make models, jewelry, mobiles, etc. Come along and join this DEEP session to learn more about this ART form.

Pencil Sketching (PSKE2)

Do you like sketching? Interested in learning how to create new drawings with just pencil. Come join this DEEP.

Still Life Art (STIL2)

Come explore the world of still life. Still life involves creating art of inanimate objects from natural or man made world. You will be using oil pastels for this.

Dark Tourist (DTOU2)

In The Traveller’s Guide to Dark Tourism, we delve into what it means to be a dark tourist; uncover the ethics of such travel, including which destinations serve to educate and inform, as well as the dos and don’ts of visiting sites with sinister pasts. Elsewhere, explore some of the most significant sites to visit, from places that have been shaped by disasters – both natural and man-made – and battlefields of the world’s defining wars, to the living legacy of Europe’s recent history behind the Iron Curtain or the tombs and mausoleums of the most important leaders and revolutionaries. Come and enjoy the darker side of our everyday.

Friendship Skills (FRIE2)

Math Art (MART2)

Use for of art to express yourself mathematically. Learn to use a compass. Bisect angles and lines to create an art form. Learn to use dots to create a geometric design. As an outcome You will develop a good understanding of geometric terms and skills.

Mathex Year 7/8 (MAXJ2)

Train and extend our able mathematicians and problem solvers by introducing them to different techniques of problem solving. The top students from this group would then participate in the Auckland Mathex competition. The students for this course will be identified by the teachers in the Whanau.

Production Cast (PROC2)

This is only for students selected as leads/ensemble members in the 2024 school production.

Science Fair (SCIF2)

This is for students that have signed up to part of the MHJC Science Fair in Term 3. In this DEEP you will work on your investigations as you work towards completing your project.

Word Wizard (WWIZ2)

Are you a good speller, and want to put your spelling abilities to test? Do you like playing with letters of alphabet? This Word Wizard DEEP will take you on a spellbinding journey, where every letter is a stepping stone to spelling success!

Eco Warrior (ECOW2)

Are you concerned about climate change and our environment? Would you like to learn about protecting our planet and becoming a change maker and making a positive difference to our school, community, city, country and planet? In this DEEP we will look at recycling, pest control, plant protection and learning about positive ways to make a difference to where we live. You will have the opportunity to be empowered to create ideas to make a positive change. This DEEP will also involve the current Enviro Council students and if you are passionate and contribute to this DEEP you will have an opportunity to join this School Council. This DEEP may involve some small field trips. We need a dedicated team to move us in the right direction. Please only apply if you think this DEEP suits your passion for the environment.

MIT App Inventor (MITA2)

You will need a Windows or Mac for this DEEP. MIT App Inventor is a visual programming environment that allows you to build fully functional apps for smartphones and tablets. You will be able to use blocks-based coding programs. So, if you want to move from technology consumption to technology creation then this DEEP is the right one for you.

Production Band (PBAN2)

This DEEP is only for those that have been selected to perform as a band member in this year's school production: Shrek the Musical.

Science and Supernatural (SCIS2)

We will evaluate claims of the supernatural and paranormal within a framework of mainstream science and critical thinking. Topics will range from claims of demonic possession to reincarnation.

Student Volunteer Army (SVOA2)

Do you have a desire to make a real difference in your community and beyond? Are you looking for a way to develop valuable skills, connect with like-minded individuals, and leave a lasting positive impact? Then the Student Volunteer Army (SVA) program at Mission Heights Junior College is for you! SVA empowers students to tackle community challenges, build leadership skills, and connect with a passionate network of young changemakers. Earn recognition for your volunteer work and join a global movement making a difference. It's fun, rewarding, and a great way to meet like-minded people!

Sports

Advanced Football (AFOT2)

This is a course for our school sports team members. In this course you will be specifically training to support the needs and demands of your chosen sport. This DEEP will extend your capacity to express yourself physically and mentally at a high level of sports performance. This is an Enrichment DEEP course and will involve physical challenges that will push the body.

Badminton (BADB2)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Are you interested in Badminton? Then this is for you! Come and develop your skills, learn the game, and perfect your shot! Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament level to represent the school are possible.

Beginners Netball (BNET2)

This DEEP course is for students who already have some skills in netball, but would like to benefit from regular training or would like to learn the skills to play netball.

Beginners Tennis (BTEN2)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
This DEEP will teach you the basic skills and techniques to get started with tennis.

Running (RUNT2)

This is open to students who are wanting to improve their distance running and overall fitness. You need to be able to run 2km in order to select this DEEP. Finally, you need the internal motivation to develop a personalised distance running goal and you will then spend the term working towards achieving this.

Self Defence (SDEF2)

In this DEEP you will learn the skills and art of Self Defence.

Yoga and Pilates (YOGA2)

A requirement for this class is that you bring your own mat. Ready to try something different that will make you feel calmer, more focused, and stronger? We will be practising postures that will test your mental and physical strength and flexibility, along with breathing exercises and meditation which will help centre and ground your body, mind and spirit.

At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Beginner Afrikaans (BAFR2)

Afrikaans is one of the many languages spoken in South Africa. If you would like to learn to speak some basic Afrikaans while having fun... then this class is for you. From introducing yourself, to learning words, phrases and sentences. Come and join the fun while learning to speak a new language!

Beginner Hip Hop Dance (BHIP2)

Come and learn one of the most popular contemporary dance styles - performed all over the world and online. Throughout the course, students will not only develop their dance skills but also gain a deeper appreciation for hip hop as an art form. With a focus on fostering creativity, teamwork, and self-confidence, this course aims to provide a positive and inclusive environment where young dancers can grow and shine.

Beginners Debating (BDEB2)

Improve your poise, self-confidence, speech skills and team-player skills with this DEEP.

Beginners German (BGER2)

If you're ready for another language challenge, why not try German? This is a basic beginners class for those who don't know any German at all. You will learn a little about Germany, and basics in the German language.

Cartoon Drawing (CDRW2)

Learn or practice your cartoon drawing through this DEEP. Practice your technique and look at different drawings for inspiration.

Clay Creations (CLCR2)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
This class would combine clay crafting with food design. Students would be taught techniques of using polymer clay to create realistic looking miniature food. These can be turned into jewellery as a great gift idea. A small fee to cover the cost of materials would apply.

Garden to Table (GART2)

Are you keen on making your own garden. In this deep you will be able to grow your own vegetables such as lettuce, carrots, kale etc. You will learn the basic skills of gardening. Importance of nature and seasons. Nutrition and health.

Laser Craft (LASR2)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
IMPORTANT: You MUST have a Windows or Mac laptop to choose this DEEP. A DEEP offering for students who would like to create designs using the laser machine. You will research designs then create and edit a drawing file which the laser machine will cut. You will then assemble your design into a completed 3D outcome which you will take home.

Origami (ORIG2)

Do you like getting creative with your hands? If so, come to this DEEP and learn how to make lanterns, origami, paper sculpturing, kites, and so on.

Sign Language (SIGN2)

Through this DEEP you will be learning the third official language of New Zealand - NZSL.

Website Development (WEBD2)

Would you like to develop the art of creating your own website? Then this DEEP is for you.

World Geography (WGEO2)

This DEEP will improve your understanding of geography.

Advanced Debating (ADEB2)

This is for students that would like to prepare for debating competitions, or are interested in being part of a debating team in future. Improve your poise, self-confidence, speech skills and team-player skills with this DEEP.

Jazz Band (JAZZ2)

A DEEP for advanced musical students looking to further their musical abilities playing jazz - you MUST be able to play an instrument at a confident level in front of others to join. The skills that you will develop in this DEEP can be transferred to all styles of music and musical performance. Students from this DEEP will be performing in different school events.

Life Skills (LSKI2)

Life Skills is only for pre-selected students.

Science Fair (SCIF2)

This is for students that have signed up to part of the MHJC Science Fair in Term 3. In this DEEP you will work on your investigations as you work towards completing your project.

Bike Ambassador (BIKE2)

This DEEP is for ONLY for pre-selected students that have been selected as Bike Ambassadors. MHJC with MHP has a state of the art bike track and bike pump track, which is situated on the bottom of our field. We are aiming to increase the amount of efficient and safe bike riders in both schools and to further this with an escalation in the amount of students and community members using bikes as a safe and viable form of transport. With this bike track and school wide emphasis on biking we are hopeful of the upsurge in bike riders MHJC is looking to develop student bike ambassadors to assist with this school wide goal. The MHJC Bike Ambassador is a strong Leadership role with the responsibility of promoting biking to our community and ensuring that others are safe and making this activity fun. The other role involves supervising the bike track users and ensuring everyone's safety. You need to be a competent and experienced bike rider and willing to learn new skills and want to be a responsible leader. This DEEP is mainly practical based.

Book Club (BCLU2)

Are you an avid reader? Come along to book club to share and discuss the books that you have read, and to be around other passionate readers like yourself.

Book In A Bag (BIBA2)

This DEEP combines reading, artwork, creative thinking and a bit of oral language! - students select a "quick read" book - then design a bag to reflect the story. Students fill the bag with items from the story - we end with a celebration of show and tell and sharing key ideas, teachings and learning from the story!

Chess Club (CHES2)

Are you wanting to learn how to play Chess or have a friendly game of Chess with your friends? In this DEEP you will do just that. You will learn the strategy and tactics behind the game and master the different moves of play.

Kapa Haka (KAPA2)

You will look and learn the different forms of performing arts that are involved with kapa haka and have a better understanding of the items performed on the stage eg: haka, moteatea, waiata tira, poi, waiata aringa. You will be working towards performing at Te-Moana-Nui-A-Kiwa Festival & other school events.

Māori & Pasifika Art (MARP2)

In this DEEP you will explore and learn the different Māori & Pasifika designs and patterns.

The UFO Myth (UFOM2)

This class will examine the myth of unidentified flying objects using a critical thinking lens.

Word Power (WPOW2)

Increase your word power by completing crosswords, mix and match games for words and their meanings, word finds and enter a Spelling Bee.

Sports

Advanced Basketball (ABSK2)

This is only for pre-selected students with well developed basketball skills, who have played competitive basketball for a school or club before. Students who intend to participate in Year 9/10 College Sport league may benefit from the extra skills training this course provides.

Beginners Rugby (Mixed) (BRUG2)

This DEEP is for anybody that would like to learn to play rugby.

Futsal (FUTS2)

This is a DEEP for those who want to play a fast paced and skilful game of football. We will develop skills, play fast paced small sided/ pitch (4v4 or 5v5) games and look at tactics and strategies. In this deep we will also improve your fitness and preparation for games that you will be playing.

Street Hockey (STHO2)

This DEEP will let your experience and learn all about street hockey. Street hockey is a fast paced small sided game social game that is played by youth on streets all over the world, it is similar to ice hockey and roller hockey but played on concrete. You will participate in modified games that develop your overall hockey ability. The aim of this tournament is to increase the amount of students interested in hockey at MHJC.
