Please read through the DEEP descriptions below for 2017. The DEEP courses are listed in Terms, by category (Discovery, Enrichment, Essentials, Passions, Sports and Learning Advisors), and then by alphabetical order.

Monday

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Beats Workshop (BEAT4)

Play the drums? Want to play the drums? Just like making noise? Joining our Beats Workshop gives you the opportunity to play and experiment with creating beats and rhythms using a variety of drums and percussion instruments. An outcome is developing a piece to play at assemblies and other school functions.

Beginners 3D Printing (B3DP4)

There is a charge of $12 for this course.
There is a charge of $12 for this course. This DEEP course is for students who want to learn how to use CAD tools to discover the world of design and technology then bring their design creations to life using 3D printing technology. No prior knowledge of computer aided design or 3D printing is needed. The fee will be needed to cover the cost of ABS plastic materials so you must be committed to meeting these costs. Restricted to 20 students due to printer access.

Chinese Cooking (CCOO4)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
This DEEP will teach you how to make traditional Chinese food. You will learn the tricks behind making amazing dumplings, fried rice, and spring rolls. You will work towards learning cooking safety to utilize at home and be able to cook traditional meals on your own.

Edible Garden (EGAR4)

There is a charge of $7 for this course.
Are you keen on making your own garden. In this deep you will be able to grow your own vegetables such as lettuce, carrots, kale etc. You will learn the basic skills of gardening. Importance of nature and seasons. Nutrition and health. Outcome: Take home what ever you have grown. Share the ideas at home and wider community.

Embroidery (EMBD4)

There is a charge of $8 for this course.
Students will be required to produce a completed embroidered design by the end of the term. Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric with needle and stranded thread. You will learn a variety of decorative stitches and use this to produce an embroidered design of your choice. Cost $8.

Trivia (TRIV4)

Would you like to become more knowledgeable about the world around you? In this DEEP you will test your knowledge and your competitive streak while completing a number of trivia quizzes. Expand your knowledge, then challenge yourself and your friends! As an outcome, you will work towards competing in a class quiz at the end of term, with a chance to create your own quiz for your whanau.

Enrichment
Enrichment courses are designed for students who have found and want to continue to grow an area of strength. Some enrichment courses require a commitment for more than one Term. Please read the course descriptions for details.
Art Enrichment (ARTE4)

The Art enrichment course will provide students the opportunity to improve their artistic talents/skills. Students will be working towards entering their Art into a competition or submit it to a community exhibition.

K Nex Challenge (KNEX4)

Note: Year 7 and 8 Students Only. Students will work in collaborative problem solving teams. This is a hands on inquiry based DEEP course that will develop your skills and knowledge of STEM related concepts. Known to be the worlds most creative construction toy, K’nex is put to the test in this architectural class! Put your fine motor and spatial skills and creativity to great use by exploring basic engineering and design concepts and principles to solve problems/challenges.

Science Investigation DEEP (SINV4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
This course has a $10 fee. New DEEP for Term 4. Get started with developing your lab skills and begin your 2018 Science Fair project. A hands on science DEEP for student wnating to enter Science fair next year.

Passion courses are about you designing your programme to reflect your interests to allow students to personalise and exciting learning program. Passions may be selected for more than one Term if desired.
Book Club (BOKC4)

Do you love to read? Is this your passion? Do you want to extend your reading abilities and discover more authors? This DEEP is for you. You will spend some time exploring new books in the library but then have time to simply read and discover new books!

Enviro DEEP (ENVI4)

This ENVIRO course was an EOTC component. The cost of this will be detailed during term 4. Selecting this course is an indication that you are willing to commit to particpate and cover the costs of the EOTC experience. Keen to help get the school looking sharp? This DEEP is for those passionate about planning our new recycling programme, growing and planting trees in the community, reviving our worm farm and investigating the possibility of a butterfly garden. Must be willing to get your hands dirty!

Fun with Coordinates (FCOR4)

Draw different characters using coordinates. Learn to use coordinate points on a graph paper. Colour your character once finished. ( There is a bit of printing involved you need to have printing money.)

Jigsaw Puzzles (JIGP4)

Improve your focus and problem solving skills with jigsaws! In this DEEP you will build a variety of jigsaws, starting with 100-piece puzzles and working all the way up to 1000 pieces. Wind down and have fun while developing patience, perseverance, and a range of skills. As an outcome, you will work towards completing a 1000-piece puzzle in a group.

Keyboard for Beginners (KEYB4)

Interested in increasing your music knowledge? Learn basic chords, note names, note values, treble and bass clefs, 4/4 time signature, and to read simple music in this beginners keyboard DEEP.

School Outreach (SOUT4)

In this DEEP, you will work with the local primary schools in the capacities they need. This might be reading with younger students. Assisting teachers with younger students with art projects. Any activities that local primary teachers may need assistance with in the classroom. WPAC - completing this DEEP for a term will go towards your 20 hours of community service.

Sports
It is important that you consider all 4 Cornerstones when designing your personalised DEEP learning programme. Please make your selections from the list below remembering that you can only select up to two sports courses per term.
Advanced Cricket - Year 9/10 Only (ACRC4)

This DEEP is specifically desgined for those Year 9 and 10 students who play high level cricket and are looking to further improve their skills ahead of Term 4's season. This DEEP will take place at MHJC using our new cricket nets.

Advanced Football (AFOT4)

Want to represent MHJC at Football? This DEEP is for you. A mixture of fitness, skills and techniques that will help develop your Football skills. As an outcome, you will work towards representing MHJC at Football. (SEZ/ AIMS/ ASB College Teams) Note to select this DEEP you must have played Football for a Club and be willing to trial for MHJC Football Teams.

Badminton (BADM4)

There is a charge of $5 for this course.
Are you interested in Badminton? Then this is for you? Come and develop your skills, learn the game, and perfect your shot! Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament to represent the school are possible. There is a $5 charge for this course.

Cheerleading (CHER4)

There is a charge of $70 for this course.
Are you interested in learning how to cheerlead? This DEEP is for you! Run by fully trained and qualified Cheerleading instructors. You will learn moves and different routines throughout the programme. Both boys and girls welcome in this DEEP. This DEEP fee is $70. The class will be filled on a proof of payment. Proof of payment needs to be sent to agrant@mhjc.school.nz. Because of this you cannot select this DEEP with your Learning Advisor as this is a pre-enrollment course.

Developmental Touch - Year 7/8 Only (DTCH4)

Do you want to improve your touch skills - learn more of the basics to become a better player? This DEEP is only open to Year 7s and 8s.

Girls Boot Class (BOOT4)

This is for girls only! A fun fitness class with great music and a great instructor. Come join the fun and work to improve your fitness.

Sports Fruit Salad (SPSA4)

Sports Fruit Salad- Are you a keen sports and games player? This DEEP will focus on recreation games and sports, looking into a new sport every week! As an outcome you will be running a recreation afternoon for a younger age group.

Tuesday

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Beginners Guitar (GUIT4)

Can you imagine yourself as a musician? In this DEEP you will learn one of the most popular and versatile instruments - the guitar. You will learn the basics and as an outcome you will work towards playing a simple song of your choice.

Cake Decorating & Icing (CAKE4)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
The fee for this DEEP course is $35. Are you interested in learning the skills behind cake decorating? Interested in creating stunning designs? In this DEEP course, you will learn some great techniques for decorating cakes and cookies using different types of icing. Butter-cream, chocolate ganache, royal icing, fondant and more - this class will equip you with the skills to turn your baking into works of art. Impress your family and friends with home-made celebration cakes which you will be able to create yourselves!

Chinese Craft and Culture (CRAF4)

There is a charge of $5 for this course.
You will experience ancient Chinese arts, such as Chinese calligraphy, Chinese water colour painting, origami, and even making your own dragons. You will enjoy many hands-on activities and showcase your crafty creations to your friends and family. All are welcome. The cost is $5 per person.

India at a glance - Understand a culture (INDC4)

Learn to design and draw Rangoli, Henna. Look at the disparity between rich and poor in India. Take virtual tours of different attractions in India. Look at how different cultures in India celebrate different festivals and weddings. Watch a Bollywood movie and eat some Indian snacks

Inkscape (INKS4)

There is a charge of $8 for this course.
There is an $8 fee for this course. This DEEP will give all participants the opportunity to use the Inkscape CAD (Computer Aided Design) programme and then, using the laser cutting and vinyl cutting machines in the technology room, produce the designs in both acrylic plastic and/or sticky backed vinyl Note: this DEEP may have year level restrictions but is suitable for both male and female students. Note; the emphasis will be on students designing their own outcomes, not downloading existing designs from the internet

Introduction to Psychology - Year 9 and 10s ONLY (PSYC4)

Introduction to Psychology . This Discovery DEEP highlights the different pathway areas in the study of Psychology. You will also be introduced to Health as well Developmental Psychology. This will further broaden your understanding of the dynamics around the functioning of different parts of the brain as well as physical health and its impact on behaviour. You will also explore the different influential psychology theorists as well as their theories.

Advanced Chinese (ACHI4)

This is for students who would like advanced teaching of the Chinese Language. It can also be taken by Year 10s who are interested in completing NCEA Achievement Standards.

Dance (DANC4)

Are you a trained dancer? Have you got untapped dance talent? Join the Enrichment Dance group and get tuition from a qualified dance teacher. Unbeatable value, spaces are limited.

Self-Portrait Art (SART4)

There is a charge of $8 for this course.
This course has an $8 fee. Are you interested in taking more art during DEEP? Want to learn some more art techniques? In this DEEP you will be making a self-portrait to display at your home or here at school. You will be using/learning the techniques behind collage, painting, and canvas printing. Bring some old magazines for your first lesson.

Solar Panel Robots (SROB4)

There is a charge of $12 for this course.
Schoolgen is a programme developed by Genesis Energy to educate school children across New Zealand about solar energy. Schoolgen's aim is to bring solar energy to life in a fun, exciting way as young people are our future leaders and decision makers. Students will develop an understanding of solar engery through the use of a Solar Robot which will be theirs to take home. There is a $12 cost for this DEEP course. Boys Writing L3 Yr 9/10 ONLY (BWR34)

This DEEP is designed to help boys (Year 9 and 10) who are having difficulty writing find enjoyment in writing through a targeted writing programme. Learners in this DEEP with also be provided with additional support mastering the SEXY paragraph structure. As an outcome, students will be able to write SEXY paragraphs independently and will have created at least one piece of creative writing using a 'story starter'.

Choir (CHOI4)

Are you always singing in the shower? Looking to perfect your vocals and perform in front of an audience? This DEEP you will learn the technical side of singing, how to do so correctly, and work to perform at different school functions.

Eco Warrior Club (EWAR4)

There is a charge of $45 for this course.
This DEEP course has an EOTC component. The cost of this course is $45. By selecting this course you are indicating that you are willing to commit to participate and cover the costs of the EOTC experience. The aim of this club is to nurture students’ adventurous spirit through outdoor adventure. Students will be given the opportunity to learn in depth 4 different outdoor pursuits: sea kayaking, cycling, camping and tramping. Following three terms focusing on these pursuits, the ultimate culmination will be a 5-day adventure discovering the Auckland area through various activities. With this in mind students will gain knowledge, developing a strong foundation for their adventure spirit. WPAC - if you go on such outdoor education activities it will work towards some of your outdoor pursuits. Also, if it is a new skill, it will go towards your passion hours.

History - Pop Music (HPOP4)

Are you interested in music? Are you interested in history? Combine these two interests and learn more about the exciting history of pop music.

Mindful Colouring (MCOL4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
There is a $10 fee for this DEEP course. Mindful Colouring asks us to focus on how we choose and apply colour in a design to bring our awareness to the present moment. This process is similar to meditation, we let go of any thoughts about tomorrow or yesterday, or what we are going to do when we finish. You will be able to take home a Mindful Colouring book once fee is paid.

Sports

Advanced Netball (ANET4)

Want to represent MHJC at Netball? This DEEP is for you. A mixture of fitness, skills and techniques that will help develop your netball skills. As an outcome, you will be required to trial for MHJC PREMS Netball. Note to select this DEEP you must have played Netball for a Club and be willing to trial for MHJC PREMS Netball Team

Batting and Fielding Sports (BATF4)

Do you enjoy a range of batting and fielding games? Longball, Softball, Quick Cricket, 4 Bat, Rounders - To name a few. Improve your throwing/ catching and batting skills in this relaxed and fun sport Deep. As an outcome you can prepare and practice for any up and coming summer sports.

Develop your bike riding confidence and skills (BIKE4)

This DEEP is only for students who owns a bike and helmet. You are required to bring your bike and helmet to school for this DEEP. Do you own a bike? Do you not use it very often? Lack the confidence to ride it to school? Do you need support to learn the road rules and the strategies needed to ride you bike safely? Want an opportuntiy to develop your bike riding skills and confidence. This is the DEEP for you.

FLOW (FLOW4)

There is a charge of $80 for this course.
This DEEP is provided in our school gym by FLOW Academy. Through their coaching you will learn Parkour, Free Running, Tricks, and Gymnastic Tumbling. This DEEP fee is $80. The class will be filled on a proof of payment. Proof of payment needs to be sent to agrant@mhjc.school.nz. Because of this you cannot select this DEEP with your Learning Advisor as this is a pre-enrollment course.

Ninja Fitness (NFIT4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
There is a $10 fee for this DEEP. Are you interested in improving your fitness and traiing like a Ninja? Than this DEEP is for you. Learn skills and techniques or Ninja training while working to improve your personal strength and fitness.

Running (RUNT4)

Are you a keen runner? With the passion to overcome obstacles as you are running. Then this DEEP is for you! In this DEEP we will look into different running techniques as well as improving our long distance fitness. As an outcome we will be entering into a running event! If you choose this DEEP you will be RUNNING every Friday. This is NOT a walking DEEP

Softball (SOFT4)

Are you interested in learning the skills behind softball? Maybe looking at joining a school or external team? Then this DEEP is for you. Open to all girls and boys in all Year levels.

Yoga (YOGA4)

Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India. In this fun class, we will cover basic yoga poses and mindfulness in a hands-on way. Improve your strength and flexibility

Wednesday

Discovery

Baking (BAKG4)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
Do you have a sweet tooth and love to bake? Enrol in baking and learn how to make delicious cookies and cakes. Sweet treats and good eats in the kitchen! Payment for this class needs to be made before class starts. As an outcome, you will be able to take recipes home to make for your family.

Beginners German (BGER4)

If you're ready for another language challenge, why not try German? This is a basic beginners class for those who don't know any German at all. You will learn a little about Germany, and basics in the German language.

Beginners Mechanics (BMEC4)

Do you have a broken bike, scooter, skateboard at home you wish you had the skills and knowledge to fix yourself? Do you have a interest in learning the basic mechanics of a 2-stroke engine - pulling it a part, reconditioning it and putting it back together. This is the DEEP course for you

Intro Robotic (IROB4)

A new DEEP offering for 2017, this DEEP will give all participants the opportunity to construct, programme and operate a robotic machine. It is envisaged that two students will work as a group and be equally involved in the construction, programming and problem solving which will be needed to design and build an operational robot. This course to available to Yr 9 and 10 students only.

Man vs Wild (MANV4)

Want to Grow Greatness Bear Grylls style? This could be the DEEP for you. A mixture of classroom based theory lessons, mixed with practical sessions in the Tane Bush. This DEEP will try to give you some basic survival / outdoor ed. Skills.

Newtons Laws of Physics (NEWT4)

Isaac Newton was one of the most influential scientists of all time. His ideas became the basis for modern physics. He built upon ideas put forth from the works of previous scientists including Galileo and Aristotle and was able to prove some ideas that had only been theories in the past. He studied optics, astronomy and math — he invented calculus.

SCRATCH (SCRH4)

Learn to code. Create your own games and animations.

Advanced Chess (ACHE4)

This DEEP is for serious Chess players. “Strategy requires thought; tactics requires observation.” – Max Euwe, 5th World Chess Champion. Learning chess is similar to learning a language. Knowledge of how to play chess under different conditions is equivalent to acquiring a vocabulary in a language.Chess strategy consists of setting and achieving long-term goals during the game, while tactics concentrate on immediate maneuver. These two parts of chess thinking cannot be completely separated, because strategic goals are mostly achieved by the means of tactics, while the tactical opportunities are based on the previous strategy of play.

Band (BAND4)

Can you already play an instrument? Are you keen to put you skills to work in a band? Then this is the DEEP for you! This will either be a Jazz Band or Concert Band depending on interest.

Film Studies - Year 9/10 (FILM4)

Fancy yourself a bit of a film connoisseur? Have an interest in what happens behind the scenes of your favourite films? Join our film club and you will have the opportunity to learn about all the tricks of the film trade. We will take a closer look at how films are made and the different techniques directors use when making a popular movie. As an outcome, you will work towards creating your own short scene for a film.

This DEEP is for experienced minecraft builders only. You need to have a device with the full application already downloaded/purchased.

Traditional Friendship Bracelets (FRBC4)

There is a charge of $5 for this course.
Transform pieces of string into colourful creations! In this DEEP you will learn how to make a variety of friendship bracelets using simple knots and patterns. Once you have mastered the basics you will be free to experiment with designs of your choice. As an outcome, you will work towards creating a meaningful and original bracelet to give to someone as a gift.

American Football (AMFO4)

This DEEP will let you experience the basic principals of playing American football. You will participate in practical drills, modified games and classroom based activities. All activities will be touch instead of tackle. You will learn the basic rules, tactics, techniques and positions to play in a proper game. American football is a highly technical and tactical game so you need to be willing to focus, think and learn new ideas. As an outcome, you will work towards participating in an official training session with a team entered in the AFA (American football Auckland) with the option of signing up to join the club for the 2016 season. This DEEP would be recommended for those interested in American football theory

Beginners Street Hockey (BSTH4)

This DEEP will let your experience and learn all about street hockey. Street hockey is a fast paced small sided game social game that is played by youth on streets all over the world, it is similar to ice hockey and roller hockey but played on concrete. You will participate in modified games that develop your overall hockey ability. As an outcome, you will create a social lunchtime tournament (you will also participate). The aim of this tournament is to increase the amount of students interested in hockey at MHJC.

Girls Cricket (GCRT4)

Are you a girl keen on learning all about the sport of cricket? Then this DEEP is for you. Learn all about the sport and it's transferable sport skills with other girls, in this fun, active, and engaging DEEP.

Power Kicking (KICK4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
There is a $10 fee for this DEEP course. Power kicking is all about learning not only how to kick powerfully but how to use various kicks specific for various situations in self defense.

Strength and Conditioning (STRE4)

Strength and conditioning is all about training your body to perform at its peak performance. In this course you will explore a range of training / exercises and drills to extend your capacity to express yourself physically and mentally. This is a Discovery DEEP course and will involve physical challenges that will push the body.

Swimming - Off-site (SWIM4)

You cannot pick this DEEP class on the survey. If you are in this DEEP your parents have already discussed this with Ms Grant and she will be manually entering this DEEP for you.

Beginners Chess (BCHE4)

Keen on learning the challenging game of chess? Then this DEEP is definitely for you! Learn how to play the game, the strategy behind it, and have some fun.

Chinese Calligraphy (CCAL4)

You are going to explore different forms of traditional Chinese art, such as Chinese calligraphy and ink wash painting. You will learn how to handle the brush and to use strokes and lines to form Chinese characters and pictures in style. Inspiration will come from well-known artists' work and your own imagination! All are welcome.

Cooking up a storm - Asian style (CKST4)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
There is a $35 fee for this DEEP course. You are going to create and eat delicious and healthy Asian style dishes, Vietnamese fresh spring rolls, Indian curry chicken, Korean cold noodles, Japanese sushi, Chinese sticky rice dumplings and much more. You are also going to learn Asian food culture, cuisine and etiquette for serving and eating food.

Try out a new change in lifestyle through yoga,healthy eating,learning the benefits of meditation,positive thinking ,creating an healthy awareness each month (eg: Heart Foundation).As an outcome, you will be creating an awareness for healthy living and promoting healthy living in your school and community.

Mood Light (MOOD4)

There is a charge of $8 for this course.
This course has a fee of $8.00. This is only open to Year 9 and 10 students who are currently NOT taking a digital technology course. A brand new DEEP offering for students who want to experience making an electronic Mood Light product incorporating electronics, soldering and laser engraving. You will design your own mood light, create a laser engraving, make an electronic circuit board to shine led lights then assemble it. It could be used for a gift or your own use.

Stop Motion Animation (STOP4)

This DEEP combines both creativity, technology and computing. Students will use Stop Motion Animation (or Object animation) which is an animation technique that physically manipulates an object so that it appears to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a fast sequence. Stop Motion Animation using plasticine is called clay animation or clay-mation. Stop motion with 3D printed objects is also possible.

Enrichment

K Nex Challenge (KNEX4)

Note: Year 7 and 8 Students Only. Students will work in collaborative problem solving teams. This is a hands on inquiry based DEEP course that will develop your skills and knowledge of STEM related concepts. Known to be the worlds most creative construction toy, K’nex is put to the test in this architectural class! Put your fine motor and spatial skills and creativity to great use by exploring basic engineering and design concepts and principles to solve problems/challenges.

Self-Portrait Art (SART4)

There is a charge of $8 for this course.
This course has an $8 fee. Are you interested in taking more art during DEEP? Want to learn some more art techniques? In this DEEP you will be making a self-portrait to display at your home or here at school. You will be using/learning the techniques behind collage, painting, and canvas printing. There is a $10 fee for this DEEP course. Mindful Colouring asks us to focus on how we choose and apply colour in a design to bring our awareness to the present moment. This process is similar to meditation, we let go of any thoughts about tomorrow or yesterday, or what we are going to do when we finish.

Te Ao Māori (TEAO4)

This DEEP option will introduce students to a range of learning and activities within the world of Māori. Students will learn and experience Māori history, performing arts, creative arts, games, language and customs.

Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament to represent the school are possible.
