    Welcome to 2021@MHJC! 


    I am excited to be teaching you again this year! 

    There is a great deal for you to discover about yourself and to utilise your strengths to be the best you can be this year! Great year for you to invest in yourself and nurture your pono to grow greatness across the 4 cornerstones of MHJC!

    We have developed an exciting Term 1 context for you: 

    Think Global, Act Local

    Whānaungatanga

    This term, across your learning areas, you will be developing your interpersonal skills and learning about leadership, and the role people play in a team or community group. You will develop values and acquire skills and knowledge personal and communal growth.

    At camp, you will challenge yourself by taking risks, collaborating in teams, managing self, and  uplifting the spirit of other students.


    In English, to help you explore the ideas of being resourceful and making a difference in your community, we start by studying a range of short texts for the purpose of business ventures. We will explore some product marketing (advertising) mediums such as: posters and promotional pamphlets & flyers, radio advertising, tv commercials, billboards, social media advertising.

    Learning Intentions: We will be developing our understanding of:

    • how texts are shaped for different purposes and audiences. ideas within, across, and beyond texts.
    • create a variety of texts in order to think about, record, and communicate experiences, ideas, and information across the curriculum.

    Instructions

    • Brainstorm some ideas for your dish
    • Decide on the ingredients required 
    • Determine the quantity for the ingredients (think carefully about this - the most important ones  will have greater quantity) Think of it as the integral parts without which the dish is not possible.
    • Write the method for this recipe. Remember to start with imperative verbs and add adverbs to make the instructions clear and easy to follow. (Check out some adverbs in the examples above).

    Activities and Expectations:

    1. Make a prediction of the story - study the front cover and the blurb of the text and write a paragraph predicting the story. You must justify/explain why you think so.
    2. Discussion Director in consultation with the group, completes the Literature Circle Organisation Sheet (this should be done quickly and without fuss).
    3. All members must complete the required reading and write their responses to the responsibility sheet designated to them.
    4. If you are confused about the responsibility or the task, consult your group members well before the meeting session. Excuses on the meeting day, will disrupt discussions.
    5. All members must be ready for their book club meeting.
    6. All members must bring their book and completed task to every meeting session.
    7. DO NOT read forward! You may be very tempted to read on but doing so will defeat the purpose of working together! Remember, it's not all about finishing the book but developing good reading skills. This can only happen if every member sticks to the expectations. 
    8. Have fun being in charge of your learning!

    Dear 8C1. I hope you are well and doing your best in this lockdown. Support your family, stay connected with friends/teachers and reach out if you need any support.

    PLAN & DO / WHAKAMAHI learning intentions:

    • We are  planningconstructing and publishing an instructional writing text.
    Due to our being in distance learning, please note that our Literature Circle programme is on hold until we return to school.

    In the meantime, we will be moving on to developing instructional/ procedural writing skills. Test how clear and accurate you are in giving instructions!


    This week we will be combining Global Studies and English.


    You are already aware that recycling and upcycling is an important part of solving our waste problems. However, much of the recycling that we send away is contaminated and cannot be recycled.


    The Challenge:

    Ms Wood and I would like you to start problem solving at home this week. Your challenge is to plan for and produce a prototype of a product which upcycles common recyclable materials into a useful product for you or your family. You will then publish and present instructions on how to make this product so you can encourage others to reduce waste and upcycle.


    Outcome:

    • Your product and the instructions will be presented to the class when we return to school
    • Products will be on display in the whanau as part of our aim to educate people about fun and useful ways to reduce waste. If your design has a Coastal theme, even better!

    Note: you must show your plan to a parent and get their permission before you begin!

    This is a combined Global-English learning task.


    One of the UNSGs is to develop more sustainable cities: affordable housing, protecting cultural and natural heritage, waste management, sustainable transport infrastructure and access to green spaces. 

    We will be focusing on safe public access to green spaces.

    • completed research using the sources provided to better understand the issues around creating green spaces in cities

    • We are focusing on punctuation for clarity and better understanding.


    We start Term 4 by reinforcing our understanding of punctuation and sentence structure.

    Learning outcome:

    By the end of this week's specific learning, you should be able to reinforce your understanding of:

    •  run-on sentences - it's a definite NO!  (They are the biggest killer of a good writing!!!). 
    •  comma splices (another NO, NO), commas for additional information,  and apostrophe.

    Learning Activity

    • Complete Education Perfect Activities by 3pm on Friday.
    • Aim to score 80%+ in Reading Plus. If you already are scoring 80%, raise your achievement bar by setting yourself a higher percentage! Your Reading Plus score this week must reflect good understanding with a high comprehension score.


    Google Meet -Wednesday 20th October, 11-11:30am. This is a 8C1-8C2 combined meet. A join link will be sent on the day.

    Those who have finished, use this time for other learning benefits. 

    End on the Year Writing - Wednesday 11am - 1pm. Please be ready:

    •  Device fully charged.

    • Find a quiet place with no distractions at home for the duration on the writing assessment on EP. (DO NOT DISTURB mode)

    • Inform your family members about this assessment. 

    • DO NOT LEAVE YOUR SEAT UNTIL THE WRITING TIME IS OVER. Time will keep running. 

    • THIS IS AN INDEPENDENT WRITING TASK AND ENTIRELY YOUR WORK. 

    • Join the class on time! 

    • Actual writing will happen on EP in test mode: Class brainstorm on Google Meet (10-20 minutes), take notes and plan (30 minutes), sit the writing assessment on EP (60 minutes) You MUST finish the writing part at least 10 minutes before the time is up so that you can edit and proofread you writing as the final piece of work. 

    • A google Meet at 11am on Wednesday. A meet link will be sent for you to join on Wednesday. Make sure to check your email regularly.

    • Revise persuasive writing  doc you used for speeches. It has a lot of tips, techniques, sentences openers, how to structure/organise your writing, how to PEEL your paragraphs, etc. (It will become useful to you when writing this assessment)

    • Remember, run-on sentences and comma splices are a NO, NO. 



    DO NOT PANIC; JUST PREPARE YOURSELF TO GIVE YOUR BEST!


    Google Meet on Tuesday @ 12:30pm - you must attend. We will go over some basic requirements for the End of the Year Writing which you will write on Wednesday.
