1. ‘Phonemes’ are the speech sounds. They are the smallest unit of sound that can distinguish one word from another and are identified by placing them inside parallel lines (/  /). 
N.B. Not just phonemes but also words, phrases and sentences can be placed in parallel lines. (Eg /ɑi laik ju: verɪ mʌtʃ / )

2.English has 20 vowel and 24 consonant sounds.
3.English is inadequate in providing one letter for one sound. (refer ‘a’ in; about, father, awesome, able, ant. )
4.IPA = International Phonetic Alphabet.
