Response to written text (Poetry)

Context: Culture and Collective Identity

Context Overview

In Term 1, we explored the concept of ‘culture and collective identity’ with poetry. First, you created your own biography poem in which you voiced the issue of stereotyping you may be going through at a personal level or as a collective. Many of you found speaking up about it self-empowering. We then studied poems by Pacific poets, where we discussed the main ideas/themes, author’s point of view and  the use of language devices for meaning.

The aim of this assignment is for you to think critically of what you read and show deeper understanding of ideas, language features and author’s purpose in poems.

When discussing the author’s purpose, we refer to the ‘why’ behind their writing. What motivated the author to produce their work? What is their intent, and what do they hope to achieve?

The author’s purpose is the reason they decided to write about something in the first place.

Assessment Task:

This assessment has two parts. Both parts are compulsory. You will submit each part separately on Google Classroom.
