     Term 1 context: Culture and Collective Identity

    Key Concept - Identity - is the state or fact of being the same. It refers to the particular features that define individuals, groups, things, eras, places, symbols and styles. Identity can be observed, or it can be constructed, asserted and shaped by external and internal influences.

    Key Concept - Culture  - encompasses a range of learned and shared beliefs, values, interests, attitudes, products, ways of knowing and patterns of behaviour created by human communities. The concept of culture is dynamic and organic.



    In Term 1, to help us explore the ideas of Culture and Collective Identity, we will be studying/producing short  texts (such as poetry, articles, visuals etc.) to embrace who we are (individually and collectively) and empower ourselves to be proud of who we are  as individuals and groups.

                                                                                              Strands covered:

    • making meaning of ideas or information received (listening, reading, and viewing)

    • creating meaning for myself or others (speaking, writing, and presenting).

    Aim:

    • To become more effective oral, written, and visual communicators by:

    • using knowledge and skills to engage with tasks and texts that are increasingly sophisticated and challenging, and doing this in increasing depth.

    Monday: Library (Return/issue out books, independent novel study) 

    This week. we will look at how our we, our parents, our tūpuna have made Aorearoa our home. We will explore the journeys and experiences of etablishing ourselves in Aotearoa.

    Activities:

    1. Read the story From Afghanistan to Aotearoa SJ L4 (Open the link to read the story)
    2. Complete the follow up activity shared on Google Classroom From Afghanistan to Aotearoa
    3. Create a graphic/ storyboard of your journey to New Zealand
    4. Write a diary entry detailing your tūpuna's or your personal experience of moving to New Zealand/ establishing your identity in New Zealand.
    5. Write a poem to share your hopes and dreams, emotions and feelings of living in Aotearoa.

    PLAN & DO / WHAKAMAHI learning intentions:

    • I am PLANNING and writing an essay on a given prompt
    • I am applying appropriate writing skills to explain my ideas to my readers.

    This week, our focus is writing. We will brainstorm, research, plan and write on a topic related to out context - Our Way and Us.

    Session 1 - Brainstorn, research and plan

    Session 2 - Silent, individual writing. You will use your plan to write.


    Success Criteria: I can/have...

    • brainstorm ideas, research form details and plan my essay (3-5 paagraphs with ideas and details)
    • write an essay using my plan
    • proofread and edit my writing before submitting 

    Activities:

    1. Class brainstorm  - 10 minutes
    2. Research and decide the main ideas for the essay - take notes
    3. Plan the essay in paragraphs - Introduction , main points (each point in separate paragraphs), conclusion
    4. Proofread and edit the essay

    Kia ora 8C2. 

    This week we will revise paragraph writing. 

    You will be using the PEEL structure to write complete paragraphs


    PLAN & DO / WHAKAMAHI

    • We are PLANNING to write paragraphs using PEEL structure
    • We are practising writing PEEL paragraphs
    • We are finding the meannigs of words in the text.


    Success Criteria: I can/have...

      1. Identify how the key words are used to support the message

      2. Understand the meaning of the key words

      3. Know the parts of PEEL and what I need to do when writing my pararaphs

      4. Use PEEL paragraph structure to write a clear, detailed essay


    Activities:

    1. Relationship article- reading and discussion
    2. Follow up activity on the artcle - see Google Classroom , Write answers in your English book.
    3. Write paragraphs using PEEL structure. - Write in your English book.
    4. Write an essay on the theme relationships - Write  in your English book.

    Are you still struggling to start your paragraphs? Do you often get stuck with what to write in your paragraphs? Well, it's easy, just PEEL it! 

    This week, we will learn/ revise how to write complete paragraph suing the PEEL method.

    Learning Intentions:

    • I will be able to explain the PEEL paragraph structure.
    • I  will be able to write a PEEL paragraph in response to a writing prompt.

    Success Criteria:

    • I can identify the four components of a PEEL paragraph: Point, Evidence, Explanation, and Link.
    • I can write a clear and concise topic sentence that states their main point.
    • I can provide relevant evidence to support their topic sentence.
    • I can explain how their evidence supports their topic sentence.
    • I can use a link sentence to connect their paragraph to the rest of their writing.


    Learning activities:

    •  How to write a PEEL paragraph 

    Prompt: Why is it important to be kind to others?

    Point: Being kind to others is important because it makes the world a better place. 

    Evidence: When we are kind to others, it makes them feel good and it can brighten their day. It can also make us feel good and it can strengthen our relationships. 

    Explanation: When we are kind to others, we are showing them that we care about them and that we value their feelings. This can help to create a more positive and supportive environment for everyone. 

    Link: In conclusion, being kind to others is important because it makes the world a better place for everyone.

    In class we will be using the prompts given to write our own paragraphs using the PEEL structure.

    Our major focus is character development (how certain characters have evolved from beginning to middle through to the end of the film).

    We will also analyse the lessons certain characters have taught us through their traits and actions in the film.
