    Kia ora Year 9 Music

    I hope you enjoy this year as you learn a range of musical skills and styles and continue to develop your work on an instrument.

    This year we will be covering a range of topics - from music history (including NZ Music in May for New Zealand Music Month), music theory, performance and more.

    In Term One we will start by exploring the MUSICAL ELEMENTS through a range of activities. As part of this we will be developing our keyboard or fretboard skills as well as getting used to using our bodies and voices to feel the music.

  • Term One Week Three

    EXPLORE / TŪHURA

    Activities:

    • Revision on BEAT, RHYTHM and TEMPO; Introduction to note durations
    • Rhythm Machine activity
    • Rhythm Gym activity

    Success Criteria - you can/have:

    • Demonstrate different rhythms while keeping time to a beat and correct tempo
    • Identify different note durations in music
    • Create a four-beat pattern
    • Notate simple rhythms

  • Term One Week Four

    EXPLORE / TŪHURA

    EXPLORE / TŪHURA learning intentions:

    • We are EXPLORING the elements that make up MUSIC
    • We are EXPLORING how sound is made
    • We are EXPLORING the different instruments that we can learn

    Activities:

    • Revision on BEAT, RHYTHM and TEMPO; note durations
    • Rhythm Gym activity - the performance
    • Introduction to ostinato


    Success Criteria - you can/have:

    • Demonstrate different rhythms while keeping time to a beat and correct tempo
    • Identify different note durations in music
    • Created a short rhythmic ostinato (optional: use the element of pitch to create a melodic ostinato)

  • Term One Week Five

    FOCUS / ARONGA

    FOCUS / ARONGA learning intentions:

    • We are FOCUSING on the skills needed to develop into a proficient musician


    Activities:

    • Chromatic and major scale written tasks - Scales and Chords doc
    • Major scale practical tasks
    • Lessons with Mr Picot


    Success criteria - you can/have:

    • Identify the notes in the chromatic scale, as well as the C and G major scales
    • Play the C and E major scales on an instrument

  • Term One Week Six

    • We are FOCUSING on the skills needed to develop into a proficient musician


    Activities:

    • Major scale written tasks - Scales and Chords doc
    • Major scale practical tasks
    • Learning chords - practical task

    Success criteria - you can/have:

    • Identify the notes in the F, D and A major scales
    • Play a range of scales on an instrument
    • Play at least three chords on an instrument

  • Term One Week Seven

    • Identify the notes in the B-flat, E and B major scales
    • Play a range of scales on an instrument
    • Have begun to learn a song on an instrument

  • Term One Week Eight

    Activities:

    • Planning a musical item - finding resources, seeing what you need to learn (chords, notes, rhythms)

    • Chosen a piece of music to perform, and have the appropriate learning materials (such as sheet music)
    • Begin to play your piece

    Activities:

    • Testing our prior knowledge of NZ music - what do we already know?
    • Exploration of NZ Music - listening to a range of songs from different periods in NZ history
    • Discussing the cultural significance of particular songs
    • Creating a playlist of NZ songs


    Success criteria:

    • Identify a range of different NZ music artists and their songs
    • Explain the cultural/historical/social significance of some of these songs
    • Have begun to compile a playlist of significant NZ songs

    This week, you will practice the music as individuals. You should try to get the opening part of your music down.

    • Play through the opening section of your music with reasonable accuracy
    • Identified the instrument-specific techniques you need to work on to perform the piece

    Activities:

    • Listening to a recording of your piece to identify the techniques required and difficult sections
    • Practice time - learning the opening section of your piece
    • Weekly lesson with Mr Picot

  • Term Two Week Four

    This term we will be using music technology to record our own original compositions. This means that we will be looking at the skills required in order to write our own music, then the skills required to use and record with music gear.
