Kia ora...students. For this week will research and develop an understanding of how Coastlines/ beaches and the oceans are off economic importance to New Zealand. We will examine ways in which these natural feature bring in money to support people living in NZ.


Success Criteria: I can/have...
- I have understood the meaning of economic development and applied this to Coastlines in NZ
- I have identified the various activities that occur along coastlines, that support our economy
Activities:
- Testing your prior knowledge on what is economic development. Creating a word bak that links with this idea: eg money/ capital. job creation/ activities/ income/ taxes/ improvement in quality of life/ infrastructure/ tourism/ business/ local government .
- List ways in which oceans are used for recreation and leisure eg snorkelling/ surfing/ swimming/ fishing.Express the enjoyment the ocean brings to us through recreational activities.With this consider if we are water safe, with our interactions with the ocean. Read articles that indicate Kiwis swimming skills or the lack of this that maybe of concern.
- List ways you think the ocean is used to make money and help support our economy.
- Read this article: and class discussion proceeds.What are your views on the benefits and the challenges. of the fishing industry in NZ.

Fisheries and Coast ... - In a table group choose one activity that is beneficial to New Zealand's economy eg fishing/ tourism/ harbours and ports. Create a slide show that discusses the following: type of industry, its economic benefits to people and NZ economy, the possible treats or challenges to the environment and your view on protecting the ocean.
- Your slide show should have evidence of good research, images, newspaper article and your views.

- We are learning to swim, to with the support of surf life saving through a beach education activity.
