Kia ora...students and welcome to week 2. For this week our learning journey will examine Coastal Geography in New Zealand. The idea is to understand important features along coastlines that will lead us to examining oceans as as economic activity as well as having cultural significance and that also is associated with political debate.
Success Criteria: I can/have...
- Understood the map of New Zealand and the location of water features in NZ
- Understood the Definition of important term s around coastal geography
- Understood the process of formation of some geographical features such as sand dunes/ coves and waves.
Activities:

What is the 'coastal environment'? • Environment Guide
- Review the map of New Zealand and indicate the location of 3 popular beaches, 3 main rivers and 3 lakes.

- Let us brainstorm the many geographical features found along the coast eg: shore line/ waves/ coves/ sand-dunes, seashells/ tides./ cliff/lagoon/river-mouth. See images on whiteboard that link with these features

- Find the definitions to waves/ tides/ currents/ climate/ erosion/ sand-dunes and estuaries. Show images of coastal areas in New Zealand that have many of these features in one location eg: Cape Ratianga.
- Watch the video on the process of waves. Write a short summary on how waves are formed.
- Research what is meant by low tide and hight tide.
- Why are coastlines important. Read this article to support you:
