  • EXPLORE / TŪHURA

    EXPLORE / TŪHURA learning intentions:

    • We are RESEARCHING measurements of the animal kingdom
    • We are INVESTIGATING the differences by comparing the measurements of a variety of animals to help us CONCEPTUALISE their sizes
    • We are CALCULATING the scale of animals by using our basic facts and division skills

Learning Intentions: WALT Drawing animals to scale

Click on the above link to see how Mrs Hindson explains how to draw to scale

    Activity Instructions:

    1. On an A4 piece of paper, Add a heading ‘Putting the Animal Kingdom into Proportion’ (You can make up your own heading if you prefer eg, "The scale of my favourite animals" or "Ocean Creatures to Scale")

    2. Pick around 6 (or more) different sized animals and research on the internet how big your animals grow to be. (eg human, dog, elephant, blue whale, giant squid etc) It is a nice idea to compare yourself with a giraffe for example.

Extension: to choose smaller animals and compare these - so you would be working with cm and mm.

eg Species of Dogs: Husky, Great Dane, Fox Terrier, Jack Russell. If a Jack Russell grows to 38cm, the scale would be 3.8cm and a Great Dane grows to 1.2m, that is 120cm so the scale would be 12cm (Divide all measurements by 10)

    3. Draw in your dot guides (as shown on this video) For every meter, measure 1 cm on the paper.

    4. Fill in the space between the dots exactly with a drawing of your animal. (It doesn’t have to be a work of art, keep it simple)

    5. Upload it on Google Classroom 7 Maths Forest. See my example here. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sJX1_IYafZIlc5gRjSsjRBLx46p54gWHl5xS3-XcStg/edit

My example is Ok - you can present your work in a much more creative way. Take the challenge!! Give it a frame - colour it in, arrange your animals in groups, the sky is the limit.

Best Posters will get printed in colour and posted up on the walls.
