Kia ora Year 9 Music
I hope you enjoy this year as you learn a range of musical skills and styles and continue to develop your work on an instrument.
This year we will be covering a range of topics - from music history (including NZ Music in May for New Zealand Music Month), music theory, performance and more.
In Term One we will start by exploring the MUSICAL ELEMENTS through a range of activities. As part of this we will be developing our keyboard or fretboard skills as well as getting used to using our bodies and voices to feel the music.

Activities:
- Revision on BEAT, RHYTHM and TEMPO; Introduction to note durations
- Rhythm Machine activity
- Rhythm Gym activity
- Introduction to Noteflight - a browser-based music notation app
Success Criteria - you can/have:
- Demonstrate different rhythms while keeping time to a beat and correct tempo
- Identify different note durations in music
- Create a four-beat pattern
- Notate simple rhythms in Noteflight

Kia ora 9 Music - as we lost time last week due to Alert Level 3, we will continue with the activities planned for last week.
Activities:

Term Two - Performances
EXPLORE / TŪHURA learning intentions:
- We are EXPLORING the music that will help develop our musicianship and skills
- We are EXPLORING the music that we enjoy and want to play live
Kia ora Year 9s and welcome to Term Two
This term, you are officially starting the process of performing live to audiences within our school. This will be your first assessment.
This week, you will begin by finding the music and the resources that you need to start the practice and rehearsal process. You might try learn a bit of a piece to gauge whether or not it's the right difficulty in consultation with Mr Bartlett and Mr Picot.
Success Criteria: I can/have...
- Identified a piece of music to play live, and shared these with Mr Bartlett and Mr Picot
- Obtained learning material and resources to learn the music

- Performance Assessment handout
- Looking through the materials given for this assessment
- Listening to and watching performances of music that you'd like to perform

- Going over the details of the performance assessment, including dates
- Initial play-through of music to ensure that it is the correct difficulty

Kia ora Year 9s
By now you should know who you are going to perform with and what you are going to perform.
This week, you will practice the music as individuals. You should try to get the opening part of your music down.
Success criteria - you can/have...
- Play through the opening section of your music with reasonable accuracy
- Identified the instrument-specific techniques you need to work on to perform the piece
Activities:
- Listening to a recording of your piece to identify the techniques required and difficult sections
- Practice time - learning the opening section of your piece
- Weekly lesson with Mr Picot

FOCUS / ARONGA learning intentions:

- We are FOCUSING on techniques that help increase the effectiveness of our practice and rehearsal time
Kia ora Year 9s
This week, you will practice the music as individuals. You should try to get more of your music down after the opening section.
Success criteria - you can/have...
- Play past the opening section of your music with reasonable accuracy (1/4 to 1/3 of the music)
- Worked on the instrument-specific techniques you need to work on to perform the piece
Activities:
- Practice time - learning more of your piece (individually)
- Listening to your piece
- Weekly lesson with Mr Picot

You should be starting to play through the entirety of your music. This week - focus as individuals on playing from beginning to end.

- Play through the whole piece of music (it doesn't have to be perfect!)
- Worked on the instrument-specific techniques you need to work on to perform the piece

Kia ora Year 9 Music and welcome back for Term 3.
This term we will be using music technology to record our own original compositions. This means that we will be looking at the skills required in order to write our own music, then the skills required to use and record with music gear.
