    Week 1

    Welcome to Food Technology

    Hello, my Year 10 Food Technology class for 2021. My name is Mrs Williamson, and I am looking forward to meeting you and learning together about technology concerning food. This year, as a food technologist, you will learn to create, bake, and adapt existing products and processes, develop new ones, and put your creative ideas into designing packaging. As we proceed through the term, you will find our class resources on Google Classroom.

    Week 2

    Analysing a Kiwi Classic - Griffins Toffee Pop

    This week you are going to undertake product analysis.

    Product analysis is carried out to:

    • investigate how a product is made; analyse the type and amount of ingredients used; gain ideas for new product development; compare differences between brands; check that a product matches its specification.

    Aspects of product analysis include:
    • Describing physical attributes, e.g. appearance and weight; Recording cost; Undertaking sensory evaluation tests, e.g. appearance, odour, taste and texture; Performing nutritional analysis; Investigating ingredients used, e.g. type, source, weight and percentage; Researching preparation or manufacturing techniques; Considering shelf-life issues; Reviewing its target group; Looking at packaging, e.g. type, function and material.

    Preventing an Outbreak 


    Learning intentions

    • This week we are learning to understand the importance of safe food preparation.


    Success criteria

    • I know which group I am sitting in and have met my team members.
    • I know my way around the food technology room and what is expected of me.
    • I am learning the importance of food safety to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses.

    • We have researched seasonality as this is part of our brief requirements
    • We have consulted with our stakeholder and agreed on the direction our project will take

    • We have written our conceptual statement
    • We have drawn a concept design and annotated it to support our first trial and what the final outcome will look like
    • We have presented our final concept design to our stakeholder

    • Continue: Working on the Team Planning Document answering the questions
    • Conceptual statement: Write a statement that communicates your big idea - what is the need or opportunity you have identified and why you should develop such an outcome. For example, the statement should summarise - what needs to happen, who it is for, where it is to be used, time frames, and why you are developing this outcome.
    • Concept design: Create a visual sketch of your conceptual design, including how you will plate-up your outcome, highlight any modifications and reasons for the changes.
    • Communicate: Communicate your visual sketch with your stakeholder, so you ALL agree on your outcome before your first trial. Highlight and record any further modifications needed on your sketch.

    Week 1


    Welcome back to Term 3. This week we start our new context: Eat More Veg - Putting More Plants on our Plate!

    Learning intention  

    This term we are looking at another strand of the Food Technology Curriculum known as Technology Knowledge. As part of our learning we will begin  understanding concepts from real-life examples and evaluating and critiquing other technologists products. This week we are spending both sessions in planning - reviewing last term's work, checking on assessment deadline, understanding the curriculum, introduction to the new context, and understanding the role of sensory evaluation.

    • Ready to hand in my two-part assessment - due on Friday

    • Understand the importance of composting and the role we need to take in the Food Tech room.

    This week we are starting to explore popular vegan burger patties from well established chefs. This is the first one of four recipes we will be trialling.

    Success criteria

    • Be open to trial and taste new flavours as these types of recipes may play a bigger role in future food. 
    • Work as a team to develop our reporting based on feedback from our team assessment.

    Your final Food Tech task for weeks 7 and 8 is to spend time in your kitchen creating a seasonal dish that can be shared with your whanau and eaten outside!

    Learning objective & activity:
    Your Food Tech task involves practical skills in your home kitchen using seasonal ingredients to create summer dish!

    Success criteria:
    I have uploaded my photo and recipe of my creation on this document (see page 3).
