    Kia ora and welcome to Y10 Food Technology. 

    My name is Mrs Priest and I will be your teacher this year. I am excited to get to know you all. A little bit about myself...I was born in Germany, have 3 kids, have studied Food Technology, Health & Safety and Business and lastly Teaching at Massey University, have worked in the Food Industry for over a decade before starting to teach.

    This week will be about getting to know each other and the food room.

    welcome to Week 6 of Term 1! This week we will be starting to look at the science behind making certain foods. We start off by looking at baking ingredients. This week we are looking at flour.

    Kia ora...and welcome to Week 7 of Term 1!

    We are continuing on our quest to learn about baking ingredients. This week's focus will be on Leavening Agents. On Tuesday we will be learning about leavening agents and on Friday we will be applying our knowledge by making pizza using yeast.

    Success Criteria:

    By the end of the week I know I have been successful when I can:

    • list examples of leavening agents
    • explain the difference between baking soda and baking powder
    • list factors that yeasts need to grow
    • work in a team to make pizza 
    • have participated in class discussions

    Kia ora...and welcome to Week 8 of Term 1. This week we are looking at the next baking ingredients and their functions: Sugars and Fats. As a practical lesson we will be making Anzac Biscuits as you might want to make them for Anzac Day in April and it uses sugar and fat in the recipe.

    Kia ora...and welcome to Week 9 of Term 1. We are continuing to learn about the science of Baking. Last week you had a reliever during the theory session, so we will check your worksheet completion. On Thursday we will be making Sponge Cake using the Whisking Method.

    This week we will be looking at and practising another baking method. This one is called "Rubbing in"  and we will be using that technique to make scones.

    This week we are reviewing the different baking methods. If we have time, we will also be looking at the assessment journal. In your team you will start to decide on one item to bake and forward the recipe to the teacher.

    For our practical session, we will be making chocolate biscuits using the creaming method.

    Kia ora...and welcome back to school. I hope you had a nice break. we are in Week 1 of Term 2.

    This week I will need your recipes for your baking trial so I can order the ingredients. 

    On Thursday you will have a reliever. Please use this time to read the baking information that applies to your chosen recipe on GC or complete your own independent research from the internet. Remember to either use " " quotation marks if quoting directly and giving the source of the info (GC, or www.website.com) or rephrasing it in your own words (preferred!).

    • read the baking information that applies to my chosen recipe on GC

    Kia ora...and welcome to Week 2 of Term 2.

    On Tuesday you continue to work on your assessment, I have uploaded some more resources in your GC.

    On Thursday we have Teacher Only Day. I have emailed your APs and DPs and asked for you to be available to come to W7 during Session 3 for you to be able to bake in order for you to better finish your assessment and maybe take a photo - I will let you know whether this will go ahead.

    • made a start on my assessment, recording the ingredients and their functions
    • started researching and reading about the ingredients and their functions
    • hopefully made the recipe on Friday

    Kia ora...and welcome to Week 3 of Term 2. 

    Last week most of you were able to trial your baking. On Tuesday reflect on how you went. Do you want to change any ingredients, any quantities or any methods? Did you achieve the attributes you were hoping for? Maybe have a look at some other recipes for the same product. Are they similar or different? In what way? For what purpose? Plan for trial 2.

    On Thursday you have Careers Day, so I will not see you.

    Next week I am hoping to bake with you on Tuesday, please watch your emails on Monday for room change notices!

    Kia ora...and welcome to Week 4 of Term 2.

    On Tuesday I believe we will be able to bake and you are able to modify your baking, to see if you can improve on your first try. You are trying to make your baking match the attributes you listed with your brief in the assessment booklet (this is needed for Beyond).

    On Thursday I will be away on a training course, so you can document your findings in the assessment journal, add your photos as well as continue working on the ingredients and their functions.

    On Tuesday the assessment is due at 3pm. You can use that lesson to ask any questions or to finish off your assessment journal. On Thursday we will be cooking. After all the sweet baking and the hard mahi working on your assessment, I have ordered ingredients for butter chicken. Please do bring a leakproof container on Thursday for any left overs. For the halal and vegetarian students I have ordered a meat substitute. Yummy!

    Kia ora and welcome to Week 7. This week we will be starting our new topic. The topic with the most votes was Nutrition and Meal Planning as well as Fast Foods. I think we can combine both.

    On Tuesday we will start by reviewing what you already know about Nutrition. We will then fill any gaps and go from there.

    On Thursday we will be making Macaroni and Cheese.

    On Thursday we were going to make Chocolate Mud Cupcakes but I was away sick. Instead you had to look at either food for sport or sports drinks and its associated nutrition.

    On Tuesday we will go over the relief work from Week 2 and answer any questions. You will also have time to finalise finding a recipe and using this in your meal plan. You will then finish the meal plan for the assessment. The assessment will be Tuesday 24th August during Session 3.

    On Thursday we will be making Spaghetti Bolognese.

    If you feel like baking, I tried this super simple recipe and it was yum. Mine took only 45 minutes to bake, and it is quite healthy too. You can also easily substitute ingredients eg flour instead of corn starch etc Have a look:

    This week's task is all about Awhinatanga. Please cook a dish for your whanau and paste a photo of it in your assignment on Google Classroom so I can have a look. If you do not feel confident making a dish, at least help your caregiver. I look forward to seeing your photos!

    It is assessment time! For the few that still have not yet shared their meal plan with me, this week is the last chance to do so.

    For the rest of you who have shared your meal plan, well done, you have passed the assessment with an AT.

    This week you have the chance to upgrade this mark to an Above or a Beyond by handing in the assessment which will be posted to Google Classroom on Tuesday morning. You will need to answer the questions and then upload it to MHOL by Thursday 28th Oct 3pm. Please no copying from the Internet or from your peers. I will check!
