    Kia ora and welcome to Week 1 of Term 1!

    My name is Petra Priest and I will be your Food Technology teacher. I am very excited to meet you all and get to know you. This week will be all about the basics, like getting to know the room, the practical routines, kitchen equipment, your peers and so on.

    I completed a Bachelor of Technology in Food Science at Massey University and worked in the Food Industry for over a decade, so if you are seriously considering this as your future career, please do not be shy and have a chat with me :)

    Success Criteria:

    By the end of this week, you should be able to know

      • What to do during practical lessons
      • How to use equipment in the kitchen
      • How to wash hands properly
      • How to measure ingredients
      • How to keep food safe
      • How to wash dishes correctly

    Welcome to Week 2 of Term 1

    This week we will be finishing off our second introduction lesson and completing our first practical which will be pancakes.

    Our Learning Intentions are:

    - I know who my team members are

    - I can work in a team to complete the given recipe

    - I know where to find the fire extinguisher and fire blanket

    - I can name some cooking terms like dice and chop etc

    Kia ora...and welcome to Week 3 of Term 1!

    Well done on having had a successful first practical! On Wednesday we will be looking at Flowcharts and how they are used. And on Friday we are looking at our first International pancake from America and Canada: Buttermilk Pancakes.

    Success Criteria:

    - I can work in a team to complete the given recipe successfully

    - I can list the various shapes used for a flow chart 

    - I know the differences between the flowchart shapes

    - I can create a flowchart for making a cup of tea

    Kia ora...and welcome to Week 4 of Term 1.

    This week will be a short week due to the Union Meeting and the Teacher Only Day on Friday.

    Below is last week's Buttermilk Pancake recipe along with a sample flowchart I created for that recipe.

    On Wednesday we will be reviewing Technology Language and the Technology Design Process. Both topics are important to be successful in Technology.


    Success Criteria:

    I know I have been successful this week if I can:

    - name most parts of the Technology Design Process

    - can match the Technology word with its meaning

    Kia ora and welcome to Week 5 of Term1!

    This week I will be on camp from Wednesday to Friday so I will not see you at all.

    I will put all activities on Google Classroom, so please have a look there.

    Next week we will be making the Finnish Pancake called Pannukkakku

    Kia ora...Welcome to Week 6 of Term 1! 

    Since you had only theory last week, I think I will make it up to you and we will make the Finnish Pancake on Wednesday and the German Potato Pancake on Friday.


    Success Criteria:

    I know I have been successful if I can/have:

    • participated in making Finnish and German pancakes

    Kia ora...and welcome to Week 7 of Term 1! 

    This week we will be making Japanese Pancakes. In our theory lesson we will review the Technology Design Process. Then we will look at factors that influence people's food choices and also look at allergens. Both will help you understand your future stakeholder better.

    Below is last week's recipe and photo, as requested:



    Success Criteria:

    I know I have been successful if I can/have:

      • participated in Kahoot
      • list some factors that influence people's food choice
      • list some food allergens and understand how they can impact people's lives

    Kia ora...welcome to week 8, 9 and 10 of Term 1.

    Below are photos of the Japanese Pancake as well as the recipe:



    Due to learning from home, we will "park" our current pancake work and move to the next topic which will be easier to cover online. This topic will be Food Safety and Hygiene. 

    Have a look on Google Classroom for the reading material and a summary quiz. This task is for the next 2-3 weeks. Please email me should you have any questions or would like extra work :)

    Kia ora...welcome to Week 1 of Term 2.

    Unfortunately I have a teacher video meeting on Wednesday morning, so I am unable to do a video chat meeting with you, but we can do one on Friday. Here is the link for Friday at 12.05pm https://meet.google.com/lookup/eru6f4mtja 

    We will be continuing to look at Food Hygiene.  This week's activity is to watch a quick video on Brain Pop and answer questions to a quiz afterwards. There is an option to email me the answers so I know you have done it. You can even practise beforehand if you like by clicking review instead of quiz.


    Success Criteria:

    • Watch a food safety video
    • Check your understanding by completing a quiz

    We will be continuing our food hygiene and safety topic. I have uploaded a worksheet on Google Classroom for you to have a go at.

    To gain more practical skills, offer to help make a meal or snack for people in your bubble.


    Success Criteria:

    I know I have been successful if I can/have:

    • Attempted the worksheet on Google Classroom
    • Read the article within the worksheet
    • Show an understanding between food hygiene/kitchen hygiene and personal hygiene
    • Helped make a snack or meal for people in my bubble

    Your task this week is to look at the slides and videos contained in the presentation called "Food Safety Lesson 1" and then complete the worksheet called "Food Safety Lesson 1 Worksheet". Both can be found on Google Classroom.


    Success Criteria:

    • I have read all slides and watched all videos in the presentation called "Food Safety Lesson 1"
    • I have completed the Food Safety 1 Worksheet and turned it in on Google Classroom

      Kia Ora and welcome to week 5 of term 2. We are continuing with our topic on Food safety and hygiene. This week's focus is on Fridge Storage.

      Please read and watch the videos contained in the Food Safety Lesson 3 slides and then complete the Food Safety Lesson 3 activities contained within the slides. Lesson 3 can be found on Google Classroom.

      Success Criteria:

      • I have read the slides and watched the videos 
      • I have completed Food Safety Lesson 3 worksheet and turned it in on GC
      If you have extra time left, assist a caregiver in food preparation.

    3. 18 May - 24 May

      Kia ora and welcome back to school! It is Week 6 of Term 2. 

      I am so excited to see you all again!

      This week is mainly a review and catch up week on our Hygiene Topic. There will be no cooking this week as we are getting used to Level 2 at school.

      Success Criteria:

      I can list most of the factors bacteria need to grow

      I have an understanding of the difference between a bacterium and a virus

      I can list some temperatures that are important to food safety

    4. 25 May - 31 May


      Kia ora...welcome to Week 7 of Term 2.

      On Friday we will be continuing with our practical lessons. To keep it familiar, we will be making Crepes so you can re-familiarise yourself with your team and the school's kitchen.

      On Wednesday we will be continuing with our Hygiene lessons, preparing for a hygiene assessment. I have added some reading material on Hygiene on GC in case you want to go deeper or revise certain aspects.


      Success Criteria:

      I have participated in the Kahoot activity

      I have participated in the Crepe practical

      I have participated in the hygiene lesson activity

    5. 1 June - 7 June


      Kia ora and welcome to Week 8 of Term 2!  I hope you had a great long week end and are ready to go!

      Our Hygiene topic is coming to an end. This week Friday we will be making Butter Chicken and on Wednesday we will be going over a Hygiene Practice Assessment and the TAAB for the assessment.

      Success Criteria:

      - I have participated in making Butter Chicken and worked hygienically 

      - I have given the practice assessment my best shot/effort.

    6. 8 June - 14 June

      Kia ora...and welcome to Week 9 of Term 2.

      On Wednesday during Session 1 it is our Assessment time. As per email I sent, you will have 1 hour of in class time to complete the assessment which you can find on Google Classroom. At the end of the lesson you will upload it to Mission Heights Online.

      On Friday we will be making Pinwheels.


      Success Criteria:

      I have participated in making pinwheels.

      I have given the assessment my best try.

        You can review the Practice Assessment in preparation as well as do the Hygiene Readings.





      1. 15 June - 21 June

        Kia ora...and welcome to Week 10 of Term 2! 

        On Wednesday this week we will be making Weet Bix slice.

        On Friday MHJC has Teacher Only Day, so we will be missing that lesson. Next week we will be reviewing the Technology Design Process and continuing our pancake journey.


        Success Criteria:

        I have participated in making a Weet Bix slice.



      2. 22 June - 28 June


        Kia ora...and welcome to Week 11 of Term 2! 

        On Tuesday this week we will be making a Smoothie.

        On Thursday we are reviewing what topics we covered before the lockdown. We will continue on our pancake journey and finish it off in Term 3.


        Success Criteria:

        I have participated in making a Smoothie.

        I have listened to and participated in the Technology Design Process Review lesson.

        I have found a stakeholder for my pancake development.


      3. 29 June - 5 July


        Kia ora and welcome to Week 12 of Term 2. 

        On Wednesday,:

        • read the material “Brief and Specs”. After that, you are to attempt to write your brief and specifications in the Pancake assessment journal.

        On Friday, you can work on some of the following tasks:

        • continue work on your pancake assessment journal. 
        • complete Task 2,  a mood board (a collection of pancake images), or 
        • research some more recipes. Beside each image or recipe, you should annotate it with what you like or dislike about it and why.

        • If you need more inspiration,  research what a garnish is and what would be suitable for a pancake. Then you could do the same with sauces, research types of sauces and which ones would be suitable for your chosen pancake.

        Kia ora and welcome to Week 1 of Term 3

        On Wednesday we will catch up on the paperwork and complete more tasks in the assessment journal. I will come and check on your progress and help you if you are stuck or unsure. We will also go over the expectations for cooking on Friday.

        On Friday this week you will be trialling your pancake creation and present it to your stakeholder, how exciting! Actually I have just found out that Cross Country will be held during Session 4 when we would have cooked, so we will postpone it until Week 2.

        Success Criteria:

        - complete more work in my pancake journal

        - ensure my team knows what we are making on Friday

        - ensure the teacher knows what ingredients my team needs



      7. 27 July - 2 August

        Kia ora and welcome to Week 2 of Term 3!

        On Wednesday you will be having a go at making poached eggs. Have a look at some of the photos of the other class below, can you make them look this great? I bet you can!

        On Friday you will finally have your go at trialling your prototype, your pancake creation. Please invite your stakeholder and bring a container if you need to transport them somewhere....


        Success Criteria:

        - work efficiently during the pancake prototype practical. Ensure you produce the prototype, take a photo and get stakeholder feedback.

        - clean up all your dishes and help other groups (nobody leaves until everybody is done)

        - try my skills at making poached eggs



      8. 3 August - 9 August

        Kia ora and welcome to Week 3 of Term 3

        Mrs Priest will be on camp all week.

        On Wednesday I would like you to work on your assessment journal. You should have made a lot of progress so far. You should include your photos of your prototype, added your stakeholder feedback, you should make plans on how you can modify the recipe to please your stakeholder etc

        On Friday, please use the assessment checklist to check yourself. Check whether you have completed the journal correctly or if you missed any parts. You can also get a peer (another student) to review this for you. They might have some ideas which could help you.

        Also please plan how you will improve your pancake creation next Friday.


        Success Criteria:


        - I have added entries into my assessment journal
        - I am organised and prepared for my next practical
        - I have use the assessment checklist to check on my progress

      9. 10 August - 16 August

        Kia ora and welcome to Week 4 of Term 3! Back to Level 3 we are!

        Your whanau leaders will be in touch in regards to catching up with Maths Buddy and Reading Plus as well as your SMART Goal writing.

        If you still want something to do, check you pancake assessment journal is as up to date as possible.

        Kia ora learners and welcome back to school! It is Week 7 of Term 3!

        This week we are starting to learn about the Food History of New Zealand. We are looking at when the early Maori arrived in New Zealand and what foods they brought with them, as well as what foods the Europeans introduced.


        Learning Intentions:

        - learn about the foods that the early settlers imported, grew and hunted.


        Success Criteria:

        - participate in the lessons

        - watch the movie clip portraying the early Maori arriving to NZ

        - complete the "Nutrition and the NZ Maori" reading and crossword


      13. 7 September - 13 September


        Kia ora students and welcome to Week 8 of Term 3!

        This week we will be doing some practicals.

        On Friday you will be making Kumara patties as kumara was a vegetable that the early settlers grew.

        On Wednesday you will be making sushi.

        On Wednesday we will explore different foods in different cultures.

        Kia ora students and welcome to Week 10 of Term 3!

        This week we will be making Maori Fry Bread. As we finish on Friday after Session 4, I will come in early on Wednesday and start making Maori Fry Bread. If we make it on Friday, there will be no time to wash the tea towels and aprons etc before the holidays which is unacceptable.

        On Friday we will do some cleaning of W7 for the holidays as well as finish our cultural activities on GC.


        Success Criteria:

        - I have participated in making Maori Fry Bread

        - I have participated in finishing off GC activities

        On Wednesday we will be finishing off the worksheet on Celebrations and Food and on Friday we will be making Burgers.

      20. 26 October - 1 November


        Kia ora and welcome to Week 3 of Term 4

        On Wednesday I have a training course, so I have set relief on GC. There are three worksheets to choose from and your task is to complete one of them.

        On Friday you can make ice cream if you have completed the above task.

        Success Criteria:

        - complete worksheet on GC

        - participate in making ice cream

        Kia ora and welcome to Week 4 of Term 4.

        This week on Wednesday we will be making a deconstructed dessert.

        On Friday you will have you Global Studies CAT. I wish you all the best for your CATs.

        Kia ora and welcome to Week 5 of Term 4.

        On Wednesday you will have your English CAT. All the very best!!

        On Friday we will be making donuts.



      23. 16 November - 22 November


        Kia ora and welcome to Week 6 of Term 4!

        This week we will be learning all about Pizza. On Wednesday you will learn how to use yeast in making the pizza dough and on Friday you will roll it out and add your own toppings and bake the pizza.


        Success Criteria:

        - I can name some factors that yeasts need to grow

        - I have participated in making pizza
