    WELCOME to 9W1PEH!

First off, welcome back!  Let me introduce myself - Ms Grant - agrant@mhjc.school.nz

    Learning Intention:

We are learning different rules, techniques, and physiology functions, that relate to sport in order to understand how movement strategies can be acquired and then applied to a variety of sports.

    Success Criteria:

    • Identify different movement strategies that are found in multiple sports (invasion games)

    • List the key muscles/bones of the human body

    • Describe 3 movement strategies that can be used in invasion games

    • Describe the relationship between bones and muscles in relation to human movement

    • Explain the importance of movement strategies and why knowledge of them is important to sporting success

    • Demonstrate these movement strategies across different invasion games

    • Evaluate your own ability to use movement strategies in different invasion games.

    1.) Let's catch-up!!

2.) 9W1 PEH course page and how Ms Grant uses MHO.

3.) Expectations for PE and Health:

    • Always meet in W6 - we will then either stay in class or go to gym and change.  Or locations will change termly.
    • Make sure you have your PE gear for every PE session!!!!  If you don't have it, I will have a discussion with you and if it becomes a regular occurrence I will contact home. This includes a hat for Terms 1 and 4.

4.) What do you want out of PE this year?  What YOU want to do.  What YOU want from me.

    Term 1 CONTEXT - History's Mysteries . . .

MONDAY - Holiday (but normally in-class for Health/Theory)

    THURSDAY - Practical - Rugby

Our context this term is History's Mysteries, we are going to connect to Science by looking at the muscles/bones so you have a further understanding of how mumification works. This will also help with our anatomy knowledge and movement strategies connection.

Practically, we will look at Invasion Games (a modern take on war) and how movement strategies can help with the playing success of these games.  What are some invasion games you would like to play/learn the strategies behind?

    Today's invasion game - Human Knot / 3 Ball

    FRIDAY - Practical - Gym

Today's invasion game - Handball (blue pads)

    1. Fibrous - do not move, held together by ligaments (eg. different bones in skull)

    2. Cartilaginous - cartilage is used to fuse bones together (eg. spine)

    3. Synovial - most common, highly moveable, 6 types . . .

    Hinge eg. your knee

Homework check - drawings and extra examples.

Last week we looked at the different types of joints. Today we will look at joint movement. One of the key functions of the human skeletal system is to allow movement.

Joint Movement - what enables us humans to move the way we do.

Below are key types of joint movement.  In your book, record the chart below.  From the video define each movement and then draw an example or explain an example. (starting at 3:50)

Joint Movement Define                    Example of each type of joint (a drawing and/or sentence explaining)
    Flexion
    Extension
    Abduction
    Adduction
    Rotation
    Pronation
    Supination
    Dosiflexion
    Plantarflexion

    Extension Work:

In the below chart, I have given you a specific joint found in the human body.  You need to then tell me the joint type, the bones we have learned around this joint, and the types of movement that occur here.

Joint       Joint Type        Bones around this joint         Types of movement

    Term 1 CONTEXT - History's Mysteries . . .

MONDAY - Health/Theory - make sure you have your PEH book!

Celebration Assembly is during our session today.

    THURSDAY - Health/Theory

In class work. This will be our final in-class session of the term. This learning will be important for you assessment that will be introduced at the beginning of Term 2.

Recap - we have learned the key bones and muscles in the body. Then the types of joints, joint movements, and some anatomical terms. We then learned the structure of a muscle and the two types of muscle fibres. Today we will learn how muscles 'fire/contract' to create movement.

Sliding Filament Theory - this is the contraction that occurs which enables our muscles (and us) to move.

    Basic explanation

    • inside each muscle fiber are myofibrils which have even smaller things called actin and myosin filaments (see drawing on board)
    • actin and myosin slide in and out of each other - this causes muscle contraction!

    How this happens . . .

    1. Nerve impulse arrives in the muscle fibre and releases calcium.
    2. Calcium causes actin and myosin to join (form a bridge).
    3. ATP breaksdown now releasing energy. This energy enables myosin to pull actin - this shortens the muscle which is contraction.
    4. This process continues to enable a muscle to keep contracting.
    5. A muscle can keep contracting as long as their is ATP

Advanced? So why do slow twitch fibers need oxygen?

The sliding filament theory uses ATP which is stored in muscles. Fast Twitch Fibers use this energy source. Slow Twitch Fibers need to contract for long periods of time, so they use oxygen to break down stored glucose which releases more ATP for muscle contraction to continue. This glucose comes and the body's fat and protein stores.

This website gives you a more comprehensive explanation of the sliding filament theory.

    FRIDAY - Practical - Gym

We will have a fun final practical session in the gym. Make sure you have your PE gear.
