Enterprising people & Entrepreneurs
Learning outcomes:
Students will be able to:
- Describe an enterprising person
- Define an entrepreneur
- Describe the difference between an enterprising person & an entrepreneur
- Recognise the qualities of enterprising people
- Describe innovation and recognise its importance in a successful business
In this module you will be learning about some entrepreneurs who are big thinkers.
These people are all enterprising – that is they are bold and use their initiative to undertake new projects. Not only do they seize opportunities whatever the situation, they create opportunities for people to achieve more than might at first be thought possible.
Entrepreneurs are enterprising people who take risks, usually financial risks, to be able to put their big thinking into action. To fulfil our potential in this world, we all need to be enterprising. Some of us will also be entrepreneurs and create new businesses and social enterprises.
To think big you need to think without limitation, and put your fears to one side. Enjoy the journey!

Enterprising People
Over the next few weeks we will look at a few case studies of enterprising people.
Jonathan Britten was a very enterprising NZ'er building a motorbike from scratch in his backyard with a group of friends in Christchurch, during the early 1990s. The bike went on to win the Battle of the Twins in Daytona International Speedway's Daytona Bike Week festivities in the United States and set several world speed records.
We will watch his story and identify al of his enterprising qualities that helped him to be successful.

Bethany Hamilton - Professional Surfer
“Courage doesn't mean you don't get afraid. Courage means you don't let fear stop you. Courage, sacrifice, determination, commitment, toughness, heart, talent, guts. That's what little girls are made of; the heck with sugar and spice.”
Bethany Hamilton grew up in Hawaii so it is not surprising to learn that by the age of 7, she was already able to surf waves. In 2003, a terrible tragedy struck when a shark bit off her left arm. As she recovered, she made two promises to herself. The first was that she would not moan about her terrible misfortune and the second was that she would get back on the surfboard. Another person would have been resigned to failure. But not Bethany Hamilton. After only 26 days, she was surfing again! She is now ranked as among the top 50 female surfers in the world. She also won first prize in the Explorer Women’s Division of the NSSA National Championships.

Michael Phelps is considered the greatest Olympian swimmer of all time and arguably the greatest Olympian ever. He has won the most ever olympic medals. 28 medals in total: his 23 gold medals are more than double the count of his nearest rivals
He won 8 gold medals alone at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
The remarkable thing about him is that as a child he suffered from ADHD and was on medication for some of that time. Most people assume that people with ADHD suffer from restlessness, impulsiveness and a very short attention span. But they also have an incredible capacity to remain hyperfocused on an activity they are passionate about. Michael has been able to use this with enormous success. By channeling his energy and focus, he has been able to exploit the positive side of ADHD.

-

BILL GATES
“Innovation is the reason our lives have improved over the last century. From electricity and cars to medicine and planes, innovation has made the world better. I believe innovation is the most powerful force for change in this world.”

What is Social Enterprise?
Social Enterprises are businesses that operate to achieve social, environmental, economic, or cultural goals. They often trade goods or services that generate revenue to advance those aims.
Case Studies

Group Task: Brainstorming: Assessment 1
