    I am looking forward to working with you to develop your design and practical skills.

    All Learning Intentions, Success Criteria and Activity instructions  will be on MHO.

    Activities will be on GC. 

    Learning will be recorded in online workbooks/ journals.

    Week 2 & 3  Learning Intentions

    We are learning 

    • The parts of the sewing machine

    • The names and uses of basic sewing tools

    • How to fill a bobbin, thread the machine and insert the bobbin case

    • Hand sewing basics - threading a needle, knots, hem stitch and tacking

    • Sewing machine basics - plain seam, straight stitch, zig zag, reversing, pivoting.

    • We are learning all the above so that we have the basic skills to start practical work.

    Success Criteria:

    • I can name the parts of the sewing machine

    • I can identify basic tools and know what they are used for.

    • I can fill a bobbin, thread the machine and insert the bobbin case

    • I can do the following Hand sewing basics - threading a needle, knots, hem stitch and tacking, sew on a button.

    • I can use the sewing machine and do these basics - plain seam, straight stitch, zig zag, reversing, pivoting.

    • I can do all the above so that I have the basic skills to start practical work.

    We are still EXPLORING /working on completing these Learning Intentions.

    We are still EXPLORING /working on completing these Learning Intentions back in Week 2.

    Practical work due:

    Due before completing the Pin Cushion and Phone Plop.

    We are continuing on our exploration part of Great Ako - we are learning new sewing skills and the codes of practice weneed to be able to use the sewimg machine and basic sewing tools.

    We have learnt some basic skills and now need to apply these to practical projects to gain confidence before moving on to a persoal project.

    Welcome back to Term 2

    This term we will continue to work our way through the MHJC Great Ako learning model. We have done some exploring and learnt how to sew and mastered some basic skills in Term 1. We are continuing on EXPLORING as we wil need to experiment with different fabric decoration methods to personal your Tote Bag. But we will also be moving on to FOCUS as well as you will need to start looking at what you are goimg to do to personalise your bag.

    • We are EXPLORING...the different methods of Fabric Decoration that we might use (experimenting)
    • We are EXPLORING these Fabric Decoration methods and discovering the PMI of some of these
    • We are EXPLORING... design ideas and how we can transfer this onto our fabric

    Week 1 - Learning Intentions. We will need to recap where we are up to in this process. 

    We will work our way through the Totel Bag Challenge Journal (see GC) that you have already started on last term. There may also be some time to look at different Fabric Decorating methods.

    Success Criteria:

    I can/have  continued towork my way through my journal. 

    I can/have investigated  and experimented with some of the different Fabric Decoration Methods (created some samples).

    I can/have completed a PMI on at least 3 of these.

    I can/have considered which Fabric Decoration Methods will go with design ideas.

    • We are MAKING/DOING...so that we make our bag - construct/make using the correct techniques and processes.

    Success Criteria:

    I can/have planned out how I will make my bag - transferring/applying design and sewing the bag

    I can/have identified the Key Stages I will follow to make my bag and have filled in the planning table.

    I can/have constructed/made my bag by following the steps in the TOTE BAG CHALLENGE step by step guide to making a tote bag.

    Activities:

    1. Transfer design idea onto fabric. Apply design using the chosen Fabric Decoration method that you trialled.

    2. Construct your bag following the instructions in the step by step guide to making a TOTE BAG on GC

    3. Complete your planning table in the Journal document. Remember that the table (No 7) is what you are getting assessed on.

    4. Check that your Assessment Doc is fully completed. Your answers should be in a different colour.

    5. Iron you fabric decoration if you have used paint to heat set it - use blank paper between the iron and paint.

    5. Insert an image of your finished bag alongside your Planning table in the doc. Upload by the due date on MHO. Aiming for end of Week 3.

    FOCUS / ARONGA learning intentions:

    • We are FOCUSING on choosing the correct technique/s to use on our boxers
    • We are FOCUSING on identifying the characteristics/properties of different fabrics and fibres - in partiular Cotton.

    Week 1

    FOCUS

    Success Criteria:

    I can/have practiced the techniques needed to place my pattern on my fabric and had it checked by the teacher and then I have cut it out.

    I can/have constructed my boxers using the new techniques I have practiced - I have used one of these techniques in my Assessment.

    I can /have researched information on the characteristics of Cotton and have used this in my Assessment.

    Activiites

    1. Complete the activities on GC - Measureme Me, Pattern Symbols, Pattern envelope/ How to place your pattern on fabric.

    2. Choose your pattern size based on your findings in Measure Me.  Prepare your fabric correctly. Place your pattern on the fabric. Get it checked by the teacher and cut it out.

    3. Read the instructions how to make PJ Boxers on GC. 

    N.b Remember that you can use one of your techniques used below for your assessment. Take a picture or hand in a named sample or your finished named boxers with your assessment

    4. Construct your boxers: 

    First Step:   Sew curved front and back seams - using a Plain seam  with a 1.5cm wide seam allowance. Sew a second row of stitching 2 mm inside of the first row. Trim seam allowance back to 5mm and zag zag edges together. Press both seams flat.

    Second Step: Pin your side seams together - back to front - starting at the top.  Show the teacher in case we need to trim anything off. Sew your side seams together 1.5cm - trim back to 5mm zig zag the edges together.

    Thirsd Step: Pin crotch seams together - sew a plain seam 1.5cm - trim seam allowance back to 5mm - zig zag edges togther.  Press under 5mm and fold up evenly to make a hem . Press. Stitch.

    OR

    Forth Step: Iron under top edge of waist 5mm. Fold over to make a casing - must be wider than the elastic. Pin in place - show the teacher. Sew from one side seam around to the top finish 2cm from where you started. Reversing at both the start and finish. You should have a gap /hole to thread through the elastic.

    Only 1 class this week on Monday as you are off on Work Experience. All the best this week at work everyone.

    First appearances are important ... make sure you choose the appropriate clothing, be well groomed.

    Ask to help at work - if you don't know what to do ......don't stand there looking like an extra.  Grab a broom sweep the floor, tidy up, be useful and use your initiative - everyone will love that you are trying.
