Section outline

  • EXPLORE / TŪHURA

    EXPLORE / TŪHURA learning intentions:

    • We are EXPLORING the structure of the earth and investigating the different events that could happen to affect this structure
    • We are EXPLORING the formation and physical property of volcanoes by researching & comparing the different volcanoes in New Zealand
    • We are EXPLORING the causes of volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis by experimentingmeasuring and calculating.
    • We are EXPLORING the formation of the 3 major rock types and what physical and chemical reactions take place to form them, through investigation

Learning Intentions :  We are learning to (WALT)...

    • Identify and describe the interior structure and basic composition of the earth
    • Label a diagram of the cross section of the earth
    • Describe the "Theory of plate tectonics"
    • Describe the "particle model of matter" theory
    • Investigate how convection currents cause the tectonic plates to move
    • Label the structure of a typical volcano
    • Describe the causes of volcanism in subduction zones
    • Describe the causes of earth quakes and how they are measured
    • Describe the causes of tsunamis
    • Describe the rock cycle and the formation of the 3 major rock types
    • Research the different volcanoes we find in New Zealand
    • Investigate the types of chemical reactions that take place inside the earth

    • Success Criteria: I can/have...
    • Correctly identify and describe the basic structure of the earth
    • Accurately label a diagram of internal structure of the earth
    • Describe  the particle model of matter  theory
    • Explain how convection currents work and how they cause the movement of the tectonic plates
    • Tabulate the differences between the different types of volcanoes in New Zealand
    • Label a typical diagram of a volcano
    • Describe what types of activity can be found where the plates meet
    • Discuss and explain the processes of earthquakes and tsunami's
    • I can describe and identify the different stages of the rock cycle

    Activities:
