    TERM 3   WEEK 3

    Success Criteria: I can/have...

    • Continue geometric patterns and predict what is happening
    • Use formulae and variables to write rules that describe patterns

    Activities:

    1. What are geometric patterns?
    2. Draw what you think a simple geometric pattern would look like. Pay attention to the word pattern. Can it be continued?
    3. Teacher explanation of a geometric pattern of matchsticks and drawing the next member of the pattern.
    4. Can you predict the number of matches required for the next pattern without drawing it?
    5. Can you notice a rule it is following?
    6. Using the rule to predict the number of matches
    7. Writing the rule for the nth term
    8. Attempt the practice questions

    EXPLORE / TŪHURA

    EXPLORE / TŪHURA learning intentions:

    • We are EXPLORING recognising algebraic vocabulary and conventions
    • We are EXPLORING finding a rule to describe any member of a sequential pattern
    • We are EXPLORING using a rule to make predictions
    • We are EXPLORING writing a rule for the nth term
