Section outline

  • WEEK 9 (8th-12th JUNE 2020)

Kia Ora Y10. This week we will begin to write our speeches. We will look at certain topics related with our contexts of Term 1/2 for speech and then you will choose a topic that you are passionate about. We will study and discuss what goes into an effective speech. You will plan your speech using the given planning template. You will present your speeches in Term 3. Remember, this will be your Assessment for Term 3. Let me know if you wish to enter the NCEA assessment for speech presentation.

You are required to construct and deliver an oral presentation of about 4-5 minutes in a formal setting. The subject of your presentation should be either:

    • a theme studied in class

    • a topical issue that arises from wide reading but related with our context OF TERM ½

Also, you will read a short story on the theme of relationships.

    Activities:

    -Deciding our speech topic

-Learning how to write a good speech

-Reading a short story ‘Broken Chain' to understand how relationships impact our life

We are exploring.....our relationships by thinking about the value, challenges, purpose, issues and gaps of relationships within a variety of texts

We are exploring.....’Change’ by analysing the ways in which life & relationships have changed after lockdown

We are exploring......the impacts of different media on self by reflecting on  how they influence our thinking about self and our behaviour

    FOCUS

We are FOCUSED..... developing our self awareness by identifying a range of important lessons/experiences from lock down for Life After Lockdown

We are FOCUSED.....on effective public speaking by understanding, discussing  and applying the features of verbal language, body language and making an oral presentation.

We are FOCUSED..... on expressing our ideas, opinions and thoughts on our chosen topic by planning and constructing our speech.

    Success Criteria: I can….

-consistently and intentionally explore personal beliefs, values, strengths, and challenges and how they impact me and my relationships

-think critically about texts (short stories/short films) with understanding & confidence and recognise, understand and consider how texts are constructed for a range of purposes, audiences, and situations

-construct texts (speech) that demonstrate an understanding of purpose (public speaking)  and audience through deliberate choice of content, language, and text form and can seek  feedback to make changes to texts to improve clarity, meaning, and effect

-use a wide range of oral & written language features and an increasing range of vocabulary to communicate precise meaning & effect, to sustain interest and to achieve a sense of coherence when constructing texts

-convey and sustain a personal voice where appropriate by being reflective about the production of my own texts: monitor and self-evaluate progress, articulate learning with confidence.
