  • Big Idea:  To investigate the biodiversity of New Zealand by looking at Genetics

    • Revise the previous unit of work using our new SCIPAD online resources 
    • Understand the key differences between sexual and asexual reproduction 
    • Describe "variation" and discuss its importance
    • Measure a feature that shows variation 
    • Describe the basic process by which genetic information is passed from one generation to the next
    • Describe the role and importance of DNA
    • To practically isolate DNA from banana cells 
    • To look at Natural vs Artificial selection and relate it to Evolution of the NZ species 
    • To predict the probability of an off spring inheriting certain characteristics 
    • To accurately work out potential offspring characteristics by doing punnett square crosses 
    • Looking at pedigree charts 
    • Investigating certain genetic diseases 

    Success Criteria: I can/have...

    • Correctly and accurately show an understanding of the work above and below 
    • Tabulate the differences between sexual and asexual reproduction 
    • Describe what "variation" is and why it is important 
    • Measure a feature that shows variation 
    • Explain the basic process by which genetic information is passed from one generation to the next
    • Describe the role and importance of DNA 
    • Work in a cohesive group and perform a DNA practical with care and precision
    • Identify whether natural or artificial selection has taken place when investigating certain organisms 
    • Accurately predict the outcome of offspring having certain characteristics by doing a punnett square cross 
    • Correctly predicting how certain traits can be inherited by completing a pedigree chart / reading information off a pedigree chart
    • Research and understand hoe certain inheritable diseases are transmitted through a family
