Please note that courses with charges are only available to students who have paid their compulsory fees and previous DEEP fees.

Discovery

This is the learning advisor group for all students.

Passion courses are about you designing your programme to reflect your interests to allow students to personalise and exciting learning program. Passions may be selected for more than one Term if desired.

Tuesday

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Alphabet Stew (ALST4)

The perfect How-To-Draw-Cartoons for beginners! Learn how to draw wacky cartoons from every letter of the alphabet.

Beginners Debating (BDEB4)

Improve your poise, self-confidence, speech skills and team-player skills with this DEEP.

Chinese Calligraphy (CCAL4)

You are going to explore different forms of traditional Chinese art, such as Chinese calligraphy and ink wash painting. You will learn how to handle the brush and to use strokes and lines to form Chinese characters and pictures in style. Inspiration will come from well-known artists' work and your own imagination! All are welcome.

German Language (BGER4)

If you're ready for another language challenge, why not try German? This is a basic beginners class for those who don't know any German at all. You will learn a little about Germany, and basics in the German language.

Green Thumbs (GRET4)

Gardening is one of the healthiest hobbies you can have. Successful gardening can be achieved by anyone. Gardening is about experimentation. There is really no right or wrong. You learn as you go, and you find what works for you. So join in this DEEP to see what we can grow in our gardens.

Mahjong (MAHJ4)

In this DEEP, you will learn how to play mahjong, one of Chinese people’s favourite pastimes. You will learn the basic strategies on how to play mahjong through attacking and defending from other players and have fun playing against each other.

Mysterious Monsters (MYMO4)

This course will explore this history and psychology behind sightings of mysterious creatures around the world, from Bigfoot and Mothman to the Loch Ness Monster. New Zealand also has has its fair share of mystery creatures from the patupaiarehe (tiny fairy beings from Maori folklore) to sightings of the ‘Coromandel Man’ (New Zealand’s Bigfoot), big cat reports and sightings of giant alligators in the Waikato River during the latter 1800s. What evidence is there to support the existence of these mystery creatures. THIS IS A COURSE IN CRITICAL THINKING AND RULES OF EVIDENCE. It is not a course in why these creatures exist - instead it asks the question: 'Why do so many people believe in monsters in the absence of compelling scientific evidence?'

Origami (ORIG4)

Do you like getting creative with your hands? If so, come to this DEEP and learn how to make lanterns, origami, paper sculpturing, kites, and so on.

Outdoor Education- Beginners (BOED4)

Basic skills and knowledge needed to enjoy adventures outdoors. Depending on students' interests, topics might include weather, first aid, navigation, camp craft (cooking, equipment, survival), biking, trip planning, exploring NZ.

Scratch (SCRT4)

With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations — and share your creations with others in the online community. Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century. Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. It is provided free of charge. More information can be found at https://scratch.mit.edu/

Tapestry (TAPE4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
In this DEEP students will learn to use a loom to make beautiful tapestries that can be used as decor.

Enrichment

GATE-Jazz Band (JAZZ4)

A DEEP for advanced musical students looking to further their musical abilities playing jazz. Students from this DEEP will be performing in different school events

Maths Problem Solving (MPRO4)

Do you love Mathematics and are good at Maths Problem solving?? Do you like to enter in Maths competitions. This DEEP is for you. In this DEEP you will be prepared for Mathex.

English Level 2: Reading and Writing (EWT24)

For students working at Curriculum Level 2 who would like to receive additional help with their reading and writing. Students will be identified by the whanau teachers.

ESOL classes have been prepared by Mrs Clansey, in consultation with Whanau teachers.

Maths Level 2: Number (MNT24)

For students who are working at Level 2 and need additional help in the 'number' strand. Students are identified by the Whanau teachers.

Maths Level 3: Number/Algebra (MNT34)

For students who are working at Level 3 and need additional help in the Number and Algebra strand. Students are identified by the Whanau teachers.

Beginners Yoga (BYOG4)

Please bring your own mat to this class if you have one at home. Ready to try something different that will make you feel calmer, more focused, and stronger? We will be practising postures that will test your mental and physical strength and flexibility, along with breathing exercises and meditation which will help centre and ground your body, mind and spirit.

Comic Book Creations (COMI4)

Do you read comics? Learn how to tell a story through graphic illustrations and learn how to draw by.

Creative Minds with LEGO (LEGO4)

In this DEEP you will unleash your imagination and creativity and use your logic thinking and constructive problem solving skills alongside with LEGO to build different and an unlimited number of objects.

DIY-Crafting (DIYC4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Would you like to learn how to make simple elegant decorations that could be used around the house or given as gifts? This DEEP will support those students who are looking to explore their creative side. As an outcome, you will work towards completing the craft project in a professional manner.

E-Music (EMUS4)

This DEEP is for students that have an interest in creating original music using digital technologies - alongside or in place of traditional instruments. You will learn the basics of using music software to create your own music and have it presented. Prior knowledge of playing an instrument or music theory is not necessary.

Eco Warrior (ECOW4)

Are you concerned about climate change and our environment? Would you like to learn about protecting our planet and becoming a change maker and making a positive difference to our school, community, city, country and planet? In this DEEP we will look at recycling, pest control, plant protection and learning about positive ways to make a difference to where we live. You will have the opportunity to be empowered to create ideas to make a positive change. This DEEP will also involve the current Enviro Council students and if you are passionate and contribute to this DEEP you will have an opportunity to join this School Council. This DEEP may involve some small field trips. We need a dedicated team to move us in the right direction. Please only apply if you think this DEEP suits your passion for the environment.

Harry Potter Club (HARY4)

Explore every corner of the wizarding world and share your passion through the Harry Porter fan club.

Journal Creation (JOUC4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Enjoy making your own junk journal starting with the cover, inside pages, embellishing and final assembly. There will also be the opportunity to create a simple mini journal and a journal cover.

Maori Art & Patterns (MARP4)

In this DEEP you will explore and learn the different Māori designs and patterns.

Pasifika Dance (PASD4)

If you want to learn a range of Pasifika dances such as a Samoan Siva, then this is the deep for you!

Sketching (PSKE4)

Do you like sketching? Interested in learning how to create new drawings with just pencil. Come join this DEEP.

Whanau Art (WHAR4)

Have the opportunity to come and make some art for your central Whanau space. There will be opportunities for independent and group tasks throughout the term and lots of different media

Sports

Badminton (BADB4)

Are you interested in Badminton? Then this is for you! Come and develop your skills, learn the game, and perfect your shot! Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament level to represent the school are possible.

Beginners Shot put and Discus (THRO4)

This will include 5 weeks on shot put and 5 weeks of discus throw training. Suitable for beginning throwers with some strength and ability to throw.

Brisk Walking for Fitness (WALK4)

Are you wanting to improve your health? Spend the hour DEEP session improving your base-line fitness and enjoying the outdoors? For this DEEP you must be in your PE gear and sport shoes. You must be willing to walk for the entire one-hour session.

Futsal (FUTS4)

This is a DEEP for those who want to play a fast paced and skillful game of football. We will develop skills, play fast paced small sided/ pitch (4v4 or 5v5) games and look at tactics and strategies. In this deep we will also improve your fitness and preparation for games that you will be playing.

Jump Jam (JJAM4)

Jump Jam is a 'Kidz Aerobix' resource created by Brett Fairweather. If you'd like to keep fit while having fun, then this is the class for you. This class caters for all levels of fitness. So come along...all you need is your PE gear, a load of enthusiasm....and plenty of energy to have fun!

Running (RUNT4)

Are you a keen runner? With the passion to overcome obstacles as you are running. Then this DEEP is for you! In this DEEP we will look into different running techniques as well as improving our long distance fitness. As an outcome we will be entering into a running event! If you choose this DEEP you will be RUNNING every week. This is NOT a walking DEEP.

Sports Fruit Salad (SPSA4)

Sports Fruit Salad- Are you a keen sports and games player? This DEEP will focus on recreation games and sports, looking into a new sport every week! As an outcome you will be running a recreation afternoon for a younger age group.

Table Tennis (TTEN4)

This DEEP is all about Table Tennis. Come and learn the skills, rules, and techniques involved in the sport. You will spend time learning new skills every week.

Wednesday

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Aboriginal Insprired Art (ABAR4)

This is an opportunity to learn about the aboriginal art culture and create your very own masterpiece to retell a story. Paints, drawing and learning about the culture is a focus of the course.

Baking (BAKT4)

There is a charge of $25 for this course.
Do you have a sweet tooth and love to bake? Enrol in baking and learn how to make delicious cookies and cakes. Sweet treats and good eats in the kitchen! Payment for this class needs to be made before class starts. As an outcome, you will be able to take recipes home to make for your family.

Beginners Keyboard (BKEY4)

Discovery For those that haven't played keyboard before, this deep goes over the basics of playing keyboard. You will learn to read and play music on the keyboard as well as chords and songs. If you are already an accomplished pianist, please take music certificate deep.

Block Printing (BLOP4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
In this DEEP Students will learn to carve into wood and other materials so that they can be painted with ink and used to make prints.

French Language (BFRE4)

Do you wish to visit or work in Paris one day? Come and learn the French language through this course.

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Learn the art of knitting through this DEEP. There is a $10 cost to this DEEP for the materials provided.

Money & You (MOYO4)

Develop financial literacy such as budgeting, investments etc through this DEEP.

Origami (ORIG4)

Do you like getting creative with your hands? If so, come to this DEEP and learn how to make lanterns, origami, paper sculpturing, kites, and so on.

Scrap Booking (SCRP4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Create beautiful life memories using your creativity and artistic skills.

The Evidence for haunted houses (EHAH4)

We will examine the scientific evidence the most famous hauntings in history including The Amityville Horror and the Don Decker 'Rain Man' case - both of which I have personally investigated. What is the evidence that something supernatural or paranormal is taking place or can science explain these events as something natural? WARNING - THIS CLASS USES CRITICAL THINKING TO EXPLORE THE TOPIC. Students will be exposed to rational, logical, scientific explanations to mysteries associated with ghosts and hauntings.

GATE-Ethics Olympiad (ETHO4)

This is an enrichment and GATE course with the opportunity to be selected to represent MHJC in the North Island Olympiad online competition. The Ethics Olympiad is a creative vehicle for developing skills in communication, critical thinking and respectful discourse while dealing with interesting and contentious ethical issues. An Ethics Olympiad is a competitive yet collaborative event in which students analyse and discuss real-life, and timely, ethical issues. It differs from a debate in that students are not assigned opposing views rather, they defend whatever position they believe is right and win by showing that they have thought more carefully, deeply, and perceptively about the cases in question. The event encourages and promotes ethical awareness, critical thinking skills, civil discourse, international engagement, and an appreciation for diverse points of view. On the competition day teams will participate online in a series of four Ethics Olympiad heats where they will be scored according to set criteria which rewards, clear, concise, respectful discourse around interesting ethical cases. We will be using the DEEP course to practice and prepare to respond to age-appropriate and objective ethical cases.

Chess Club (CHES4)

Are you wanting to learn how to play Chess or have a friendly game of Chess with your friends? In this DEEP you will do just that. You will learn the strategy and tactics behind the game and master the different moves of play.

Cook Island language and dancing (CIDA4)

Interested in learning the Reo (language) of the Cook Islands and experiencing the fun and unique dance style of Hula? This deep will teach you all about the Cook Island culture!!

Diamond Painting (DPAN4)

There is a charge of $17 for this course.
A mix between paint by numbers and cross stitch, diamond painting has emerged in the last few years as a way to create 'masterpieces' by following a printed canvas and placing beads. This is a quiet, independent and reflective craft, where accuracy and organisation will lead to success. There is a $17 charge for the kit.

Handwriting (HAND4)

Would you like to improve your handwriting and learn to maintain a neat learning journal? Then this DEEP is for you.

Harry Potter Club (HARY4)

Explore every corner of the wizarding world and share your passion through the Harry Porter fan club.

Math Art (MART4)

Use of art to express yourself mathematically. Learn to use a compass. Bisect angles and lines to create an art form. Learn to use dots to create a geometric design. As an outcome You will develop a good understanding of geometric terms and skills.

Minecraft (MINE4)

This DEEP is for experienced Minecraft builders only. You need to have a device with the full application already downloaded/purchased. For this DEEP class you will be required to enter one of the monthly competitions at "Planet Minecraft Contests" These are monthly community contests with themes, judges and prizes, pixel art trophies and recognition! MIT App Inventor (MITA4)

MIT App Inventor is a visual programming environment that allows you to build fully functional apps for smartphones and tablets. You will be able to use blocks-based coding programs. So, if you want to move from technology consumption to technology creation then this DEEP is the right one for you. You will need a Windows or Mac for this DEEP.

Sudoku and Cross words (SUWO4)

Do you enjoy solving cross word puzzles and Sudoku? Would you like how to learn to solve these puzzles? Then this is the DEEP for you.

WASGIJ Jigsaws (WASJ4)

WASGIJ is "jigsaw" spelled backwards, is an innovative puzzle concept in which the picture on the box is merely a clue for the puzzle you will be putting together. This DEEP will help increase your problem solving skills and get your imagination working.

Beginner Basketball (BBAS4)

This course caters to the learn skills to be a basketball player. Come and enjoy learning basketball skills.

Bike Ambassador (BIKE4)

MHJC is pleased to announce a new leadership opportunity for students as we look at growing their greatness and future life skills. MHJC with MHP has now completed a state of the art bike track and bike pump track, which is situated on the bottom of our field. We are aiming to increase the amount of efficient and safe bike riders in both schools and to further this with an escalation in the amount of students and community members using bikes as a safe and viable form of transport. With this new bike track and school wide emphasis on biking we are hopeful of the upsurge in bike riders MHJC is looking to develop student bike ambassadors to assist with this school wide goal. The MHJC Bike Ambassador is a strong Leadership role with the responsibility of promoting biking to our community and ensuring that others are safe and making this activity fun. The other role involves supervising the bike track users and ensuring everyone's safety. You need to be a competent and experienced bike rider and willing to learn new skills and want to be a responsible leader. This DEEP is mainly practical based.

Football- Boys (BFOT4)

"This is for students who would like to develop their basic football skills, who might not have played much competitive football before. Sign up for this DEEP so that you can learn the rules of the game and improve your skills through a range of interesting and fun drills and small-sided games.

Girls Football (GFOT4)

Are you looking at learning some football skills? Learn the rules of the game? You will do this through playing mini games of football on the field.

Just Dance (JDAN4)

Shake your hips and wave your hands in a fun filled dance activity for one hour. You will also have a chance to choose your own song and dance to selected songs as well.

Karate (KARA4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Develop self-discipline, confidence and leadership skills through this DEEP. Sensei is from GKR Karate.

Les Mills for Girls (LMFG4)

Improve your physical and mental health through this fitness program. This program is only for girls.

Speed Walking for Fitness (WALK4)

Can you imagine yourself as a musician? In this DEEP you will learn one of the most popular and versatile instruments - the guitar. You will learn the basics and as an outcome you will work towards playing a simple song of your choice.

Clay Creations (CLCR4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
This class would combine clay crafting with food design. Students would be taught techniques of using polymer clay to create realistic looking miniature food. These can be turned into jewellery as a great gift idea. A small fee to cover the cost of materials would apply.

German Language (BGER4)

Money time (MONE4)

This DEEP will teach you all about personal finance. You will learn about money growth, how to save, how to invest, and how to make your money work for you. You will complete an external programme teaching you these skills and be rewarded 'money' to purchase avatars or invest further, helping you make smart decisions with money.

Scratch (SCRT4)

With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations — and share your creations with others in the online community. Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century. The truth about UFO's (SUFO4)

Did a flying saucer crash in the desert near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947? For hundreds of years people have reported strange objects in the sky. Some even claim to have been abducted by extraterrestrials. Are UFOs real? What is the evidence that ETs have visited us and are abducting people? Does the New Zealand government know more than the are telling and is there a cover-up?

WASJ Jigsaws (WASJ4)

WASGIJ is "jigsaw" spelled backwards, is an innovative puzzle concept in which the picture on the box is merely a clue for the puzzle you will be putting together. The image on the box depicts a cartoonish scene of surprise and tumult. This DEEP will help increased your problem solving skills and get your imagination working.

Water Colour Art (WACL4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Learn about the colour wheel and create art based on Maori stories.

Word and Number Games (QURU4)

Come and discover new games such as Quiddler and Rummy in this DEEP. If you enjoy playing games that require strategising and problem solving, you will be in your element.

Fantasy Football Manager (FFMA4)

This is a deep for students who love Football and follow the English Premier League. You will be tasked with being a manager of a team and using your tactical analysis of the weeks professional matches to select a fantasy team that will score you points against other students and staff in the league. We will also view and analyze the matches from the previous weekends games.

GATE- Leadership (LEAD4)

Leadership through ko tau rourou and manaakitanga In this DEEP course you will have the opportunity to develop your leadership through a Māori Worldview - we will be working with young rangatahi and alongside the kaiako (teachers) at the KiNZ early learning centre (on our back field). To make connections with, to work in service of, to look after and care for others. Ko tau rourou can be described as generosity of spirit, but it also has a number of other dimensions. It can refer to offering assistance in a way that creates a sense of wealth (non-material, usually). Essentially, this is a form of cooperation that enables development through giving. Manaakitanga is a related concept that reflects the importance of caring for another person, doing the right thing for them, and ensuring their well-being.

Crochet Crafts (CROC4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Crochet is a popular needle craft that uses a hook and yarn or thread. We'll teach you how to crochet so that you can start stitching table mats, hats and more.

Disney Appreciation (DSAP4)

Handwriting (HAND4)

Would you like to improve your handwriting and learn to maintain a neat learning journal? Then this DEEP is for you.

Kapa Haka (KAPA4)

You will look and learn the different forms of performing arts that are involved with kapa haka and have a better understanding of the items performed on the stage eg: haka, moteatea, waiata tira, poi, waiata aringa. Students will be selected for this DEEP.

Minecraft (MINE4)

This DEEP is for experienced Minecraft builders only. You need to have a device with the full application already downloaded/purchased. For this DEEP class you will be required to enter one of the monthly competitions at "Planet Minecraft Contests" These are monthly community contests with themes, judges and prizes, pixel art trophies and recognition! Mosaic Creation (MOSC4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
A mosaic is a pattern or image made of small regular or irregular pieces of coloured stone, glass or ceramic, held in place by plaster/mortar, and covering a surface. In this DEEP you will be developing the art of creating mosaics.

Sudoku and Cross words (SUWO4)

Do you enjoy solving cross word puzzles and Sudoku? Would you like how to learn to solve these puzzles? Then this is the DEEP for you.

Wearable Art (WEAR4)

Design and construct an original and wearable garment from a variety of trash. You need to be prepared to spend three terms on this and the best will be selected to exhibit in the Auckland Middle Schools Art Exhibition, which will earn you a cultural cornerstone.

Website Development (WEBD4)

Would you like to develop the art of creating your own website? Then this DEEP is for you.

3x3 Basketball (3X3B4)

3×3 (pronounced 3 ex 3), also known as 'street basketball' was officially announced as a new Olympic sport and debuted at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. 3×3 is played on a half court, 1 hoop, 2 teams, 3 players per team (and up to one substitute). 3x3 allows players to focus on their shooting game - come along and join the fun!

Brisk Walking for Fitness (WALK4)

Are you wanting to improve your health? Spend the hour DEEP session improving your base-line fitness and enjoying the outdoors? For this DEEP you must be in your PE gear and sport shoes. You must be willing to walk for the entire one-hour session.

Calisthenics (CALS4)

Looking to improve your own strength and develop lean muscles? In this DEEP you will work to do this through exercise using your own body. No extra gear, nothing!

Cultural Games (CULG4)

This DEEP will offer a variety of games from around the world. These will take an alternative approach to the traditional sports that are regularly played in schools, allowing students to gain a cultural understanding of why these games are played the way they are, in accordance with the country's or island's customs. Games like Ki-O-Rahi (Maori) and Lape (Samoa) will be taught/played as well as many others.

Sports psychology (SPSY4)

Get an insight into how some of the World's top sporting athletes train, think, prepare, play and outsmart opponents. What makes a great player? Their upbringing, coaches, environment, education? From Pele to Mohommed Ali to Steffi Graf to Steven Gerrard to Michael Jordan. This DEEP involves a mixture of both practical and theory based. If you're a sports fan as well as an aspiring sports player this DEEP is a must for you.
