Please read through the DEEP descriptions below for 2018. The DEEP courses are listed in Terms, by category (Discovery, Enrichment, Essentials, Passions, Sports and Learning Advisors), and then by alphabetical order.

Please note that courses with charges are only available to students who have paid their compulsory fees and previous DEEP fees.

Monday

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Beginners 3D Printing (B3DP4)

There is a charge of $12 for this course.
This DEEP course is for students who want to learn how to use CAD tools to discover the world of design and technology then bring their design creations to life using 3D printing technology. No prior knowledge of computer aided design or 3D printing is needed. The fee will be needed to cover the cost of ABS plastic materials so you must be committed to meeting these costs. Restricted to 20 students due to printer access.

Beginners Crochet (CROC4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
In this DEEP you will learn the craft of crochet. You will make items that you can take home, give as gifts, or use yourself. Crochet is a process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn, thread or strands of other materials using a crochet hook.

Bollywood Dance (BOLY4)

Are you interested in learning the skills and history involved in this dance? Want to spend more of your DEEPs being active? Looking to participate in more school functions? Then join this DEEP!

Chinese Cooking (CCOO4)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
This DEEP will teach you how to make traditional Chinese food. You will learn the tricks behind making amazing dumplings, fried rice, and spring rolls. You will work towards learning cooking safety to utilize at home and be able to cook traditional meals on your own.

Chinese Craft and Culture (CRAF4)

You will experience ancient Chinese arts, such as Chinese calligraphy, Chinese water colour painting, origami, and even making your own dragons. You will enjoy many hands-on activities and showcase your crafty creations to your friends and family. All are welcome. The cost is $5 per person.

Collage (COLL4)

Use the process of collage to design and construct an artwork using printed paper in combination with hand drawn images.

Crazy Critters (CCRT4)

Have fun working with Felt. Join this class if you want to learn how to design and make some fun felt items. Starting with a key or bag tag. This is course is suitable for all as you will start with hand stitching and move on to some basic machine stitching.

Keyboard for Beginners (KEYB4)

Interested in increasing your music knowledge? Learn basic chords, note names, note values, treble and bass clefs, 4/4 time signature, and to read simple music in this beginners keyboard DEEP.

Mindfulness and Meditation through Yoga (YOGA4)

In this DEEP you will learn different ways of how to stay mindful and become calm in challenging situations. This will be taught through different yoga forms and techniques.

Ornamental Vases (ORNA4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
In this DEEP, you will make an ornamental vase from paper mache and embellish it with exotic painted designs. This is great to give as a Christmas present to family and friends.

Soap Making (SOAP4)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
Are you interested in making your own soap and other bath projects? Do you like natural products similar to those from Lush? In this DEEP, you will learn the science behind soap making. You will make and package your own soap to take home or give away as gifts. Learn these skills so you can further make products at home!

Touch Typing (TTYP4)

Touch typing (also called touch type or touch keyboarding) is typing without using the sense of sight to find the keys. Specifically, a touch typist will know their location on the keyboard through muscle memory. This course will use online platforms and games to develop this essential digital skill.

Enrichment
Enrichment courses are designed for students who have found and want to continue to grow an area of strength. Some enrichment courses require a commitment for more than one Term. Please read the course descriptions for details.
Design and Visual Communication (DVC) (DVCD4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Have you ever wanted to develop your design and drawing skills? In this DEEP you will have the opportunity to build and develop a range of design skills. You will be provided with design tools that enable you to design and draw different 2D and 3D shapes.

Intermediate Ukulele (IUKE4)

If you already have some experience in playing a Ukulele (you can strum, play a few chords, know a few songs, then this DEEP will be for you. At the conclusion of the DEEP you will; be proficient in playing and singing several songs as a group, be willing to perform songs as a group, be willing to sing as well as play, students not willing to sing need not apply.

Just Breathe - Mindfulness Enrichment (BREA4)

Just Breathe is an advanced mindfulness and yoga practice designed to help you deal with negative thoughts and behaviours, build self-confidence, focus, and treat others and yourself with respect and appreciation. If you have done the beginners mindfulness course and are keen to continue with this practice then this is the course for you.

Essentials

English Level 3: Reading - Yr 7/8 ONLY (ERM34)

For students working at Curriculum Level 3 who would like to receive additional help with their Reading. Learning Advisors should confirm your reading level from your latest e-asTTle assessment report.

English Level 3: Writing Yr 7/8 ONLY (EWM34)

For students working at Curriculum Level 3 who would like to receive additional help with their Written Language. Students will develop their understanding of the surface and deeper features of quality writing, through a range of fun and effective learning activities.

ESOL - Monday Intermediate (ESLM4)

ESOL classes have been prepared by Mrs Clansey, in consultation with Whanau teachers.

Maths Level 3: Algebra (MAM34)

For students who are working at Level 3 and need additional help in the 'algebra' strand. Please confirm your level from the latest e-asTTle results.

Passion courses are about you designing your programme to reflect your interests to allow students to personalise and exciting learning program. Passions may be selected for more than one Term if desired.
Enviro DEEP (ENVI4)

Stream monitoring, tree planting, pest tracking, and park clean-ups are several community environmental activities you will work on in this DEEP. Help build a Maori herb garden for the school and resurrect the Worm Farm!

Find you Indian roots (INDI4)

Are you interested in learning more about Indian culture? Interested in learning Hindi myths and legends? In this DEEP you will be doing just that! Learn about how to extend yourself in the Indian culture, myths, customs, legends, language.

Horticulture (HORT4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Learn the science and art of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants. You must be willing to get your hands dirty in return for seeing the 'fruits/flowers' of your labour. Basic skills of pruning and trimming trees will be taught.

Library Club (LICL4)

Are you interested in reading books? Interested in sharing books with others. In this book club you will be doing just that! You will be reading books in the library and then writing book recommendations for fellow students.

Sports
It is important that you consider all 4 Cornerstones when designing your personalised DEEP learning programme. Please make your selections from the list below remembering that you can only select up to two sports courses per term.
Badminton (BADM4)

Are you interested in Badminton? Then this is for you! Come and develop your skills, learn the game, and perfect your shot! Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament level to represent the school are possible.

Batting and Fielding Sports (BATF4)

Do you enjoy a range of batting and fielding games? Longball, Softball, Quick Cricket, 4 Bat, Rounders - To name a few. Improve your throwing/ catching and batting skills in this relaxed and fun sport Deep. As an outcome you can prepare and practice for any up and coming summer sports.

Girls Boot Class (BOOT4)

This is for girls only! A fun fitness class with great music and a great instructor. Come join the fun and work to improve your fitness.

Man vs Wild (MANV4)

Want to Grow Greatness Bear Grylls style? This could be the DEEP for you. A mixture of classroom based theory lessons, mixed with practical sessions in the Tane Bush. This DEEP will try to give you some basic survival / outdoor ed. Skills.

Relay Sprinting (RELA4)

Students will develop sprint technique and running style. They will Increase speed and learn to use the starting blocks. Students will learn to run as a team in a relay with baton changing and understand the correct relay starting routine. Correct warm-up and warm- down exercises will be taught to ensure safe practice and be injury free.

Sports Fruit Salad (SPSA4)

Sports Fruit Salad- Are you a keen sports and games player? This DEEP will focus on recreation games and sports, looking into a new sport every week! As an outcome you will be running a recreation afternoon for a younger age group.

Strength and Conditioning (STRE4)

In this course you will be specifically training to support the needs and demands of your chosen sport. This DEEP will extend your capacity to express yourself physically and mentally at a high level of sports performance. This is an Enrichment DEEP course and will involve physical challenges that will push the body. This DEEP is good preparation for those students that already play or wishing to play at ASB College Sport level or someone trying to make the AIMS team.

Tennis (Hot Shots) (TENN4)

In this DEEP, you will be working with a specialist Tennis Coach who will teach you the basic tennis skills through fun and engaging games and activities.

Tuesday

Discovery

Beginners Ukulele (BUKU4)

If you are a complete beginner and would like to learn how to play the Ukulele, then this DEEP will be for you. At the conclusion of the DEEP you will be proficient in playing and singing several songs. You must be willing to sing as well as play, students not willing to sing need not apply to join this DEEP.

Christmas Crafts (CHRI4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Are you interested in making Christmas cards, gift tags, and other crafting items you can then give to friends and family for a gift. This DEEP will be all about Christmas!

Crazy Critters (CCRT4)

Electronic Music (EMUS4)

This DEEP is for students that have an interest in creating original music using digital technologies - alongside or in place of traditional instruments. You will learn the basics of using music software to create your own music and have it presented. Prior knowledge of playing an instrument or music theory is not necessary. As an outcome, you can have your work presented to an audience.

Mindfullness 101 (MIND4)

Find out different ways to develop your ability to focus, reflect and enrich your lives by becoming more conscious of the present moment. For those who enjoy being either quiet or active. Learn a skill which will equip you for life!

Pin Bracelets (PINB4)

Have you ever wanted to try something crafty? During this session you will be designing and making your very own pin bracelet. You decide what you'd like your design brief to look like - get into action -and start creating!

Rummage and Recycle - Crafting (RUMC4)

Do you like crafting and re-using materials? Finding new uses for old products? Have things at home that you'd like to make new creations out of? In this DEEP you will learn how to make new products out of old. Be ready to bring items in from home to use.

Weaving (WEAV4)

Use a variety of materials, starting with paper, to make a series of two dimensional woven pieces. You will have the opportunity to develop your own patterns and designs.

Enrichment
Enrichment courses are designed for students who have found and want to continue to grow an area of strength. Some enrichment courses require a commitment for more than one Term. Please read the course descriptions for details.
Advanced Guitar (AGUI4)

This is for students who know how to play the guitar. This is to further improve your playing and further learn how to read music to broaden your playing abilities.

Enrichment Algebra (EALG4)

Are you wanting to further advance your Algebra skills? Learn cool tricks and strategies to improve? This DEEP will teach you more about Algebra, challenge you, and further advance your skills.

Knitting for Charity (KNIT4)

In this DEEP you will be learning to knit. You will be learning to make booties, beanies and blankets to donate to babies at Middlemore Hospital. You may bring your own wool or have some purchased for you.

Science Investigation (SINV4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Get started with developing your lab skills and begin your 2019 Science Fair project. A hands on science DEEP for students wanting to enter Science fair in Term 3, 2019.

Student Newsletter Team (SNEW4)

MHJC will be producing a second newsletter run entirely be students. If you are a keen writer/ photographer/ editor, have exciting ideas to share with the students at MHJC, and you have an interest in news media, sign up to be a part of the newsletter team! This will be a 2 Term commitment.

Time Craft (TCRA4)

Have you ever wanted to design and make a clock? In this DEEP you will have the opportunity to use your knowledge in Maths and Art to design, personalise and make your own clock. You will be provided with the clock mechanism and you need to decide what you'd like your design brief to look like - get into action -and start creating!

Advanced Chinese (ACHI4)

You need to already have basics speaking ability in this language. Come to develop speaking, reading and writing in Chinese

Algebra for Beginners (ALGB4)

Are you wanting to get to grips with the basics of Algebra? Develop building blocks to algebra by becoming familiar and confident with the basic rules.

Choir (CHOI4)

If you are interested in singing in a group, you will enjoy this DEEP. You will learn basic vocal warm-ups, technique, and group singing dynamics.

Mindful Colouring (MCOL4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Mindful Colouring asks us to focus on how we choose and apply colour in a design to bring our awareness to the present moment. This process is similar to meditation, we let go of any thoughts about tomorrow or yesterday, or what we are going to do when we finish. You will be able to take home a Mindful Colouring book once fee is paid.

Sports

Beginners Cricket (BCRI4)

This DEEP is perfect for students who have little or no experience of cricket and are looking to see if it is a sport that they might like to peruse. Sessions will focus on learning basic batting, bowling, and fielding techniques. Games for Understanding will help the students put these skills to the test in a game situation.

Calisthenics (CALS4)

Looking to improve your own strength and develop lean muscles? In this DEEP you will work to do this through exercise using your own body. No extra gear, nothing!

Develop your bike riding confidence and skills (BIKE4)

Do you want to learn how to ride a bike? Lack the confidence to ride it to school? Do you need support to learn the road rules and the strategies needed to ride you bike safely? Want an opportunity to develop your bike riding skills and confidence. This is the DEEP for you. Bike and helmet supplied. There will be an EOTC component to this DEEP with a transport cost later in the term.

Girls Cricket (GCRT4)

Are you a girl keen on learning all about the sport of cricket? Then this DEEP is for you. Learn all about the sport and it's transferable sport skills with other girls, in this fun, active, and engaging DEEP.

Gymnastics (GYMN4)

Are you interested in learning gymnastics? This DEEP is for you! You will learn moves and different routines throughout the programme. Both boys and girls welcome in this DEEP.

Just Dance (JDAN4)

Shake your hips and wave your hands in a fun filled dance activity for one hour. You will also have a chance to choose your own song and dance to selected songs as well.

Baking (BAKW4)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
Do you have a sweet tooth and love to bake? Enrol in baking and learn how to make delicious cookies and cakes. Sweet treats and good eats in the kitchen! Payment for this class needs to be made before class starts. As an outcome, you will be able to take recipes home to make for your family.

Curiosity Critical Thinking and Problem Solving (CTHI4)

Einstein once said “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.” Curiosity is at the core of creative thinking. It's creative thinking combined with critical thinking that gives all of us the best chance at becoming super problem solvers. You will be given the freedom through problem solving to explore issues you are curious about. Curiosity boosts creative thinking which in turn works with critical thinking to lead to better problem solving. Curiosity keeps the mind active, nimble and able to notice useful things!

An Introduction to Mindfulness and Meditation

Educational Online Games (EONG4)

This DEEP will enable you to increase your Maths and English skills through entering different games and competitions from all over the world. Some games will also support humanitarian avenues. One example is http://freerice.com/#/english-vocabulary/1395.

Exploring Using Google Maps (GMAP4)

Are you interested in travel and gaining knowledge of places around the world. Through this DEEP you will be using Google Maps to explore the greater globe and expand your horizons!

Google Basics! (GOGL4)

Do you know how to set up master documents, indent, create links, add bullet points, high-resolution images and masks? Come and join step-by-step tutorials for mastery of Google slides and more!

Inkscape for Beginners (INKS4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
This DEEP will give all participants the opportunity to learn the Inkscape CAD (Computer Aided Design) programme and then, using the laser cutting and vinyl cutting machines in the technology room, produce the designs in both acrylic plastic and/or sticky backed vinyl.

Knitting for Charity (KNIT4)

In this DEEP you will be learning to knit. You will be learning to make booties, beanies and blankets to donate to babies at Middlemore Hospital. You may bring your own wool or have some purchased for you.

Jack the Ripper - History (JACK4)

Jack the Ripper is the best-known name for an unidentified serial killer generally believed to have been active in the largely impoverished areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. This is a "who done it" DEEP. Learn the history of who this person was to try and solve this crime.

Orchestra (ORCH4)

This DEEP is for students who have had previous lessons with their instrument. Are you keen to put you skills to work in an orchestra? Then this is the DEEP for you! Auditions will be carried out in the first DEEP sessions to make sure you are proficient with your instrument.

Photography (PHOT4)

Learn all about the techniques of taking good photographs - learn how to adjust your photos digitally to enhance what you have done. Take part in a photo competition at the end of term 4.

Toy Car Building (TOYC4)

There is a charge of $20 for this course.
In this DEEP you will learn combinations of design, robotics, wood skills, and physics in order to build your own toy car. Races will be an exciting part as well. Cars can be taken home at the end of the Term.

Book Club (BOKP4)

Do you love to read? Is this your passion? Do you want to extend your reading abilities and discover more authors? This DEEP is for you. You will spend some time exploring new books in the library but then have time to simply read and discover new books!

Friendship Bracelets (FREI4)

Transform pieces of string into colourful creations! In this DEEP you will learn how to make a variety of friendship bracelets using simple knots and patterns. Once you have mastered the basics you will be free to experiment with designs of your choice. As an outcome, you will work towards creating a meaningful and original bracelet to give to someone as a gift.

Minecraft (MINE4)

This DEEP is for experienced Minecraft builders only. You need to have a device with the full application already downloaded/purchased. For this DEEP class you will be required to enter one of the monthly competitions at "Planet Minecraft Contests" These are monthly community contests with themes, judges and prizes, pixel art trophies and recognition! Sports

Active Mindfulness Mountain Biking (MBIK4)

There is a charge of $15 for this course.
Do you wish to improve on your fitness, understand how to focus better on 1 task at a time, learn about being in the zone and experience one of the most accessible Adventure Sports in NZ? This DEEP will be almost 100% practical and will also aim to assist you with your focus and concentration skills by using mindfulness techniques. If you have a high level of fitness, resilience, a sense of adventure and have mountain biked before or completed any of the Beginners Bike DEEP class this option could be for you ( a selection process will occur). We will spend 4 weeks developing your skills, focus and awareness. The following 5 weeks will be spent actually mountain biking at Totora Park for about 1 hour. You may bring your own bike or use the school bikes.

Are you wanting to improve your health? Spend the hour DEEP session improving your base-line fitness and enjoying the outdoors? For this DEEP you must be in your PE gear and sport shoes. You must be willing to walk for the entire one-hour session.

This DEEP is an introduction to Ultimate Frisbee. Learn the proper techniques behind throwing a frisbee and then the skills behind playing the game.

Thursday

At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Beginners Mechanics (BMEC4)

Do you have a broken bike, scooter, skateboard at home you wish you had the skills and knowledge to fix yourself? Do you have a interest in learning the basic mechanics of a 2-stroke engine - pulling it a part, reconditioning it and putting it back together. This is the DEEP course for you. This DEEP is a practical course; you will be getting your hands dirty.

Chinese Calligraphy (CCAL4)

You are going to explore different forms of traditional Chinese art, such as Chinese calligraphy and ink wash painting. You will learn how to handle the brush and to use strokes and lines to form Chinese characters and pictures in style. Inspiration will come from well-known artists' work and your own imagination! All are welcome.

Music through STEM (MUST4)

How does science, technology, engineering and maths affect music? As it turns out, we wouldn't have music as we know it without STEM! In this DEEP, you will learn about how advancements in STEM have resulted in advancements of music and music technology. An outcome of this course includes learning how to operate sound technology and creating music through technology.

Plush Toy Making (PTOY4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
In this class, you will learn the techniques behind sewing, how to use a needle and thread and different stitches for different purposes. As an outcome through your new skills, you will be handcrafting small plush toys.

Traditional Chinese Games (TGAM4)

Forget about computer games that fix your eyes to a screen, traditional Chinese games are so much fun! You will have the opportunity to try out Chinese Yoyos (also called diabolos), spinning tops, and Chinese shuttlecocks. These ancient pastimes are not only fun but also great for developing your eye and body coordination. Quiet games could be Chinese chess or Chinese whispers. All are welcome if you want to do something different.

Enrichment

EPro Challenge (EPRO4)

The EPro Challenge is a competition, an engineering and problem solving race. Every year over 9000 students from 800 schools from throughout New Zealand take part. In this DEEP you will learn how to build structures, complete electrical circuits, solve engaging problems, and investigate engaging science experiments.

KNex Challenge (KNEX4)

Students will work in collaborative problem solving teams. This is a hands on inquiry based DEEP course that will develop your skills and knowledge of STEM related concepts. Known to be the worlds most creative construction toy, K’nex is put to the test in this architectural class! Put your fine motor and spatial skills and creativity to great use by exploring basic engineering and design concepts and principles to solve problems/challenges.

Robotics (ROBO4)

There is a charge of $15 for this course.
Learning the science, technology, and computer programming that makes today's greatest robots. From the little to the large you will begin to learn how these amazing systems are developed right from the ground up.

Science in Everyday Life (SLIF4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
How is science involved in making cookies? Is science involved in making a car work? Where else in the world in science so important? Ask these great questions and more while finding out how science is apart of your everyday life!

Basic Te Reo Maori (BTER4)

This DEEP is all about learning correct pronunciation, greetings, karakia and basic sentences to say around school and in daily life.

Media and Editing (MEDE4)

Allowing us to integrate and arrange life memories to produce active footage that is stored on Digital Platforms. We will use the media editing computers for this course.

Mindful Colouring (MCOL4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Mindful Colouring asks us to focus on how we choose and apply colour in a design to bring our awareness to the present moment. This process is similar to meditation, we let go of any thoughts about tomorrow or yesterday, or what we are going to do when we finish. You will be able to take home a Mindful Colouring book once fee is paid.

Minecraft (MINE4)

This DEEP is for experienced Minecraft builders only. You need to have a device with the full application already downloaded/purchased. For this DEEP class you will be required to enter one of the monthly competitions at "Planet Minecraft Contests" These are monthly community contests with themes, judges and prizes, pixel art trophies and recognition! School Outreach (SOUT4)

In this DEEP, you will work with the local primary schools in the capacities they need. This might be reading with younger students. Assisting teachers with younger students with art projects. Any activities that local primary teachers may need assistance with in the classroom. WPAC - completing this DEEP for a term will go towards your 20 hours of community service.

Sports
It is important that you consider all 4 Cornerstones when designing your personalised DEEP learning programme. Please make your selections from the list below remembering that you can only select up to two sports courses per term.
Beginners Basketball (BBAL4)

Are you interested in basketball? Learn all the key skills involved in basketball and work to up your skills in order to play basketball for MHJC. Work through to potentially trial for an MHJC team.

Contemporary Dance (CDAN4)

Do you love dance? Looking to learn the skills and techniques behind contemporary dancing? This DEEP is for you and is run by an external dance coach.

HIIT Training (HIIT4)

HIIT is a training technique which involves intense bursts of high-intensity exercise followed by varied periods of low-intensity active rest, or complete rest. In this DEEP you will take part in a new HIIT workout each week and learn about the benefits of high-intensity exercise in short bursts. This is open to all and great for beginners.

Running (RUNH4)

Are you a keen runner? With the passion to overcome obstacles as you are running. Then this DEEP is for you! In this DEEP we will look into different running techniques as well as improving our long distance fitness. As an outcome we will be entering into a running event! If you choose this DEEP you will be RUNNING every week. This is NOT a walking DEEP

Sports Through Leadership (SLEA4)

In this DEEP, you will learn the basic skills of coaching and deliver games to local primary schools. WPAC - the hours you spend out working with younger students will go towards your community service hours.

Table Tennis (TTEN4)

This DEEP is all about Table Tennis. Come and learn the skills, rules, and techniques involved in the sport. You will spend time learning new skills every week but also have time to complete in an in-house tournament.
