Please read through the DEEP descriptions below for 2021. The DEEP courses are listed in Terms, by category (Discovery, Enrichment, Essentials, Passions, Sports and Learning Advisors), and then by alphabetical order.

Please note that courses with charges are only available to students who have paid their compulsory fees and previous DEEP fees.

Monday

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Beginners and Advanced Guitar (GUIT3)

Can you imagine yourself as a musician? In this DEEP you will learn one of the most popular and versatile instruments - the guitar. You will learn the basics and as an outcome you will work towards playing a simple song of your choice.

Everyday Japanese (JAPL3)

Introduce yourself to the world of Japanese Language from the expertise of a Japanese teacher.

Healthy Living (HLIV3)

Try out a new change in lifestyle through yoga, healthy eating, learning the benefits of meditation, positive thinking, creating an healthy awareness each month (eg: Heart Foundation). As an outcome, you will be creating an awareness for healthy living and promoting healthy living in your school and community.

Laser Craft (LASR3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
A DEEP offering for students who would like to create designs using the laser machine. You will research designs then create and edit a drawing file which the laser machine will cut. You will then assemble your design into a completed 3D outcome which you will take home.

Modern Myths (MOMY3)

Are you interested in knowing more about the Alligators in the Sewers to the Roswell crashed saucer? Then this DEEP is for you!

Origami (ORIG3)

Do you like getting creative with your hands? If so, come to this DEEP and learn how to make lanterns, origami, paper sculpturing, kites, and so on.

Sketchup Architecture (SKAR3)

Learn how to plan and design your "dream room" from the ground up. This is a basic introduction to Sketch UP architectural software. You need to be able to install SketchUp on your computer to choose this DEEP.

Spanish Culture (SPAC3)

Spain is famous around the world for Flamenco music and dance, bullfights, fantastic beaches, and lots of sunshine. But what people sometimes forget is that Spain has been one of the cultural centres of Europe for thousands of years and delicious food worldwide known. During this DEEP we will go through Spanish History, Fiestas, Food, Music and Travelling. Come and enjoy!

Tongan Language and Culture (TONG3)

If you're ready for another language challenge, why not try Tongan? This is a basic beginners class for those who don't know any Tongan at all. You will learn a little about Tonga, and basics in the Tongan language.

WASJ Jigsaws (WASJ3)

WASGIJ is "jigsaw" spelled backwards, is an innovative puzzle concept in which the picture on the box is merely a clue for the puzzle you will be putting together. The image on the box depicts a cartoonish scene of surprise and tumult. This DEEP will help increased your problem solving skills and get your imagination working.

Whanau Art (WHAR3)

Have the opportunity to come and make some art for your central Whanau space. There will be opportunities for independent and group tasks throughout the term and lots of different media

Enrichment
Enrichment courses are designed for students who have found and want to continue to grow an area of strength. Some enrichment courses require a commitment for more than one Term. Please read the course descriptions for details.
Beginners Debating (BDEB3)

An opportunity for gifted, confident writers and speakers to develop debating skills and take part in the South Eastern Zone competition.

Book Bingo (BING3)

For those of you who love reading, come and explore the world of books, while completing a Book Bingo.

Essay Writing (ESSA3)

Essay Writing: Developing your confidence and skills in essay writing. Focus: structure and ideas development

GATE Performing Art (PERA3)

Students invited to participate in Gate Performing Arts DEEP show promise in multiple performing arts areas. In this DEEP students will be mentored in Dance, Acting and Singing to provide them with a well rounded skills set that can prepare them for various performance opportunities at MHJC. They will also gain knowledge in audition etiquette, rehearsal techniques and stage presence to ensure they can enjoy their time on stage with confidence and ease! Students will be preselected for this DEEP.

English Level 2: Reading and Writing (EWM23)

For students working at Curriculum Level 2 who would like to receive additional help with their reading and writing. Learning Advisors should confirm your reading level from your latest e-asTTle assessment report.

English Level 3: Reading and Writing (EWM33)

For students working at Curriculum Level 3 who would like to receive additional help with their reading and written language. Students will develop their understanding of the surface and deeper features of quality writing, through a range of fun and effective learning activities.

ESOL - Monday Intermediate (ESLM3)

ESOL classes have been prepared by Mrs Clansey, in consultation with Whanau teachers.

Maths Level 2: Number (MNM23)

For students who are working at Level 2 and need additional help in the 'number' strand. Please confirm your level from the latest e-asTTle results.

Passion courses are about you designing your programme to reflect your interests to allow students to personalise and exciting learning program. Passions may be selected for more than one Term if desired.
Active History (AHIS3)

You cannot be in this class if you have already taken Active History. In this DEEP you will learn about historical events through participating in role plays, escape rooms and history mysteries. Each week you will enter a different time period and historical event in order to develop your historical knowledge.

Clay Creations (CLCR3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
This class would combine clay crafting with food design. Students would be taught techniques of using polymer clay to create realistic looking miniature food. These can be turned into jewellery as a great gift idea. A small fee to cover the cost of materials would apply.

E-Pro for Year 7 and 8 (EPRO3)

This DEEP will be a precursor to entering the Epro8 Challenge which is a competition for students from years 7/8 and 9/10. The competition requires a group of . or 4 students to solve a series of given challenges which could incorporate any of these activities:- build large sized structures- solve practical problems- engineer using pulleys, motors, gears, wheels and axles- invent machines that can complete simple tasks- undertake unusual and fun experiments. - construct basic electronic circuits. - solve interesting problems using practical mathsIn preparation for the competition students participating in this DEEP will use a variety of construction materials and kits to solve a range of similar challengesFor more information, see; http://www.epro8challenge.co.nz/

Mindful Colouring (MCOL3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Mindful Colouring asks us to focus on how we choose and apply colour in a design to bring our awareness to the present moment. This process is similar to meditation, we let go of any thoughts about tomorrow or yesterday, or what we are going to do when we finish. You will be able to take home a Mindful Colouring book once fee is paid.

Travelwise (TRAV3)

Are you interested in contributing to an important aspect of the school? This DEEP involves us looking at ways to improve the way we come to and from school and educating our community about safe and sustainable travel. This DEEP will also be looking at awarding a Travelwise certificate for students that complete a safety bike course. Students that are already part of the Travelwise Council will also take part in this DEEP program and if you take part in this DEEP you may be able to permanently join the Travelwise Council.

Trees for Survival (TSUR3)

This DEEP will teach you how to from plants from seed, how to design a garden, plant natives for Trees for Survival, whether and how plants can communicate with each other, what plants need to grow, imported weeds in NZ and how they impact the environment and other topics.

Sports
It is important that you consider all 4 Cornerstones when designing your personalised DEEP learning programme. Please make your selections from the list below remembering that you can only select up to two sports courses per term.
Advanced Netball (ANET3)

Are you in the Aims or premier netball team at MHJC. Then this is the deep for you.

Beginners Basketball (BBAL3)

Are you interested in basketball? Learn all the key skills involved in basketball and work to up your skills.

Boys Badminton (BADB3)

Are you interested in Badminton? Then this is for you! Come and develop your skills, learn the game, and perfect your shot! Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament level to represent the school are possible.

Football (FBAL3)

Are you a football fan? Come and enjoy a casual game of football with your friends.

Futsal (FUTS3)

This is a DEEP for those who want to play a fast paced and skillful game of football. We will develop skills, play fast paced small sided/ picth (4v4 or 5v5) games and look at tactics and strategies. In this deep we will also improve your fitness and preparation for games that you will be playing.

Girls Cricket (GCRT3)

Are you a girl keen on learning all about the sport of cricket? Then this DEEP is for you. Learn all about the sport and it's transferable sport skills with other girls, in this fun, active, and engaging DEEP.

Just Dance (JDAN3)

Shake your hips and wave your hands in a fun filled dance activity for one hour. You will also have a chance to choose your own song and dance to selected songs as well.

Learn to Juggle (JUGG3)

Participants will be introduced to the art/sport/hobby of Juggling. Starting with the basic throw and catch and moving towards a 3 ball cascade students will develop basic hand-eye coordination and key movement skills.

Speed Walking for Fitness (WALK3)

Are you wanting to improve your health? Spend the hour DEEP session improving your base-line fitness and enjoying the outdoors? For this DEEP you must be in your PE gear and sport shoes. You must be willing to walk for the entire one-hour session.

Alexander Hamilton (ALEX3)

Musical.

Alphabet Stew (ALST3)

The perfect How-To-Draw-Cartoons for beginners! Learn how to draw wacky cartoons from every letter of the alphabet.

Baking (BAKT3)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
Do you have a sweet tooth and love to bake? Enrol in baking and learn how to make delicious cookies and cakes. Sweet treats and good eats in the kitchen! Payment for this class needs to be made before class starts. As an outcome, you will be able to take recipes home to make for your family.

Board Games (BOGA3)

Learn to play a variety of board games and maybe even find a new favourite to teach your family.

Card Games Cadets (CARD3)

Take this DEEP to develop strategic and critical thinking skills through a range of fun card games.

Crochet Crafts (CROC3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Crochet is a popular needle craft that uses a hook and yarn or thread. We'll teach you how to crochet so that you can start stitching table mats, hats and more.

Electronic Music (EMUS3)

This DEEP is for students that have an interest in creating original music using digital technologies - alongside or in place of traditional instruments. You will learn the basics of using music software to create your own music and have it presented. Prior knowledge of playing an instrument or music theory is not necessary. As an outcome, you can have your work presented to an audience.

German Language Intermediate (IGER3)

If you're ready for another language challenge, why not try German? This is an intermediate class for those who know a little German.

KNEX Challenge (KNEX3)

Students will work in collaborative problem solving teams. This is a hands on inquiry based DEEP course that will develop your skills and knowledge of STEM related concepts. Known to be the worlds most creative construction toy, K’nex is put to the test in this architectural class! Put your fine motor and spatial skills and creativity to great use by exploring basic engineering and design concepts and principles to solve problems/challenges.

Raranga Weaving (NTMA3)

This course will look at the Māori arts of whakairo (carving), tukutuku (wall panels), kowhaiwhai (patterns), and raranga (weaving). Students will be pre-selected and will work on designing and making a tomokanga (entrance way), heke (ceiling panels) and tukutuku (wall panels) for the school.

The truth about UFOs and Aliens (SUFO3)

Did a flying saucer crash in the desert near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947? For hundreds of years people have reported strange objects in the sky. Some even claim to have been abducted by extraterrestrials. Are UFOs real? What is the evidence that ETs have visited us and are abducting people? Does the New Zealand government know more than the are telling and is there a cover-up?

Creative Writing (CREW3)

Do you enjoy writing for fun? Stories, poems, journals, etc. Then this DEEP is for you. It will also help to improve your overall writing abilities in a fun and creative way.

GATE Hummanities (GHUM3)

This DEEP is for preselected students only.

Jazz Band (JAZZ3)

A DEEP for advanced musical students looking to further their musical abilities playing jazz. Students from this DEEP will be performing in different school events. Students will be selected into this DEEP.

Kapa Haka (KAPA3)

You will look and learn the different forms of performing arts that are involved with kapa haka and have a better understanding of the items performed on the stage eg: haka, moteatea, waiata tira, poi, waiata aringa.

Boys Writing (BWT33)

This DEEP is designed to help boys who are having difficulty writing find enjoyment in writing through a targeted writing programme. Learners in this DEEP with also be provided with additional support mastering the SEXY paragraph structure. As an outcome, students will be able to write SEXY paragraphs independently and will have created at least one piece of creative writing using a 'story starter'.

English Level 3: Reading and Writing (EWT33)

Comic Book Creator (CBCR3)

Use Krita software to create your own hilarious comic strip. Basic character creation and digital manipulation will be taught so you can bring your ideas to life. You need to download the free Krita digital paint program onto your device to take this DEEP (https://krita.org/en/).

Creative Minds with LEGO (LEGO3)

In this DEEP you will unleash your imagination and creativity and use your logic thinking and constructive problem solving skills alongside with LEGO to build different and an unlimited number of objects.

Diamond Painting (DPAN3)

There is a charge of $15 for this course.
A mix between paint by numbers and cross stitch, diamond painting has emerged in the last few years as a way to create 'masterpieces' by following a printed canvas and placing beads. This is a quiet, independent and reflective craft, where accuracy and organisation will lead to success. There is a $15 charge for the kit.

Eco Warrior (ECOW3)

Are you concerned about climate change and our environment? Would you like to learn about protecting our planet and becoming a change maker and making a positive difference to our school, community, city, country and planet? In this DEEP we will look at recycling, pest control, plant protection and learning about positive ways to make a difference to where we live. You will have the opportunity to be empowered to create ideas to make a positive change. This DEEP will also involve the current Enviro Council students and if you are passionate and contribute to this DEEP you will have an opportunity to join this School Council. This DEEP may involve some small field trips. We need a dedicated team to move us in the right direction. Please only apply if you think this DEEP suits your passion for the environment.

Minecraft (MINE3)

This DEEP is for experienced Minecraft builders only. You need to have a device with the full application already downloaded/purchased. For this DEEP class you will be required to enter one of the monthly competitions at "Planet Minecraft Contests" These are monthly community contests with themes, judges and prizes, pixel art trophies and recognition! MIT App Inventor (MITA3)

MIT App Inventor is a visual programming environment that allows you to build fully functional apps for smartphones and tablets. You will be able to use blocks-based coding programs. So, if you want to move from technology consumption to technology creation then this DEEP is the right one for you. You will need a Windows or Mac for this DEEP.

School Outreach (SOUT3)

In this DEEP, you will work with the local primary schools in the capacities they need. This might be reading with younger students. Assisting teachers with younger students with art projects. Any activities that local primary teachers may need assistance with in the classroom. WPAC - completing this DEEP for a term will go towards your 20 hours of community service.

Short Film Creations (SFCR3)

All aspiring filmmakers wanted for this exciting introductory DEEP on film creation. Bring along a camera or phone, and a sense of wild curiosity.

Wallpaper Art (WALL3)

Help create a paper cut collage to design your own wallpaper pattern. We will be looking at a variety of collage artists and creating different paper effects to use on our artwork. Your finished pieces can be made into place mats or even saved as a PDF file and taken to a printer to enlarge as a cool wall backdrop (this expense would be yours). Get retro, funky and creative with your art in this DEEP.

Advanced Volleyball (AVOL3)

This DEEP is for students who already know how to play volleyball and would like to play for the MHJC team.

Beginners Hockey (HOCK3)

This DEEP will let your experience and learn all about street hockey. Street hockey is a fast paced small sided game social game that is played by youth on streets all over the world, it is similar to ice hockey and roller hockey but played on concrete. You will participate in modified games that develop your overall hockey ability. As an outcome, you will create a social lunchtime tournament (you will also participate). The aim of this tournament is to increase the amount of students interested in hockey at MHJC.

Beginners Table Tennis (BTTE3)

Come explore the world of Table Tennis, from a coach who has played it at National Level

Boys Cricket (BCRT3)

Are you a boy keen on learning all about the sport of cricket? Then this DEEP is for you. Learn all about the sport and it's transferable sport skills with other boys, in this fun, active, and engaging DEEP.

Running (RUNT3)

Are you a keen runner? With the passion to overcome obstacles as you are running. Then this DEEP is for you! In this DEEP we will look into different running techniques as well as improving our long distance fitness. As an outcome we will be entering into a running event! If you choose this DEEP you will be RUNNING every week. This is NOT a walking DEEP.

Bollywood Dance (BOLY3)

Are you interested in learning the skills and history involved in this dance? Want to spend more of your DEEPs being active? Looking to participate in more school functions? Then join this DEEP!

Card Games Cadets (CARD3)

Take this DEEP to develop strategic and critical thinking skills through a range of fun card games.

Chinese Cooking (CCOO3)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
This DEEP will teach you how to make traditional Chinese food. You will learn the tricks behind making amazing dumplings, fried rice, and spring rolls. You will work towards learning cooking safety to utilize at home and be able to cook traditional meals on your own.

Dungeons and Dragons (DUNG3)

Learn how to cooperate with a group and solve all kinds of problems though playing the tabletop game Dungeons and Dragons

Forensic Science Investigation (FOSI3)

Would you like to be a CIA or Mi5 agent? Collect, identify, classify, and analyse physical evidence related to criminal investigations. ... Forensic science aid criminal investigations by collecting and analysing evidence.

German Language - Beginners (BGER3)

If you're ready for another language challenge, why not try German? This is a basic beginners class for those who don't know any German at all. You will learn a little about Germany, and basics in the German language.

Korean Language (KORE3)

Whether you’re a BTS fan or just curious about all things Korean come and join us on a ‘Korean Time’ journey where we will learn to write, read , and pronounce Hangul (the Korean alphabet), while at the same time being captivated by its brilliance and beauty. Voted by UNESCO as the most logical and scientific of all writing systems in the world! (Students will need an exercise book (1B8) to write in.)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.

Scratch (SCRT3)

With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations — and share your creations with others in the online community. Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century. Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. It is provided free of charge. More information can be found at https://scratch.mit.edu/

The Evidence for haunted houses (EHAH3)

We will examine the scientific evidence the most famous hauntings in history, from The Conjuring to The Amityville Horror. What is the evidence that something supernatural or paranormal is taking place or can science explain these events as something natural?

Website Development (WEBD3)

There is a charge of $15 for this course.
Would you like to develop the art of creating your own website? Then this DEEP is for you.

What if..... (WHAT3)

This is a DEEP course focused on Curiosity, Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving. Einstein once said “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.” Curiosity is at the core of creative thinking. It's creative thinking combined with critical thinking that gives all of us the best chance at becoming super problem solvers. You will be given the freedom through problem-solving to explore issues you are curious about. Curiosity boosts creative thinking which in turn works with critical thinking to lead to better problem solving. Curiosity keeps the mind active, nimble and able to notice useful things!

Advanced Music Performance (ADMP3)

This DEEP is for students that are proficient at an instrument or vocals. Students will rehearse for upcoming performance opportunities with support and feedback from the teacher. Both solo and band/ensemble performers are welcome. As an outcome, students will work towards performing at an event such as Community Day, RockQuest, Talent Quest, music exams, an assembly or any other performance opportunity.

Chess Club (CHES3)

Are you wanting to learn how to play Chess? In this DEEP you will do just that. You will learn the strategy and tactics behind the game and master the different moves of play.

Creative Writing (CREW3)

Do you enjoy writing for fun? Stories, poems, journals, etc. Then this DEEP is for you. It will also help to improve your overall writing abilities in a fun and creative way.

Crazy Bracelets (CHBR3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Students will learn how to make bracelets from strings. Students will also have opportunity to learn some crazy decorative knots in the class. Please bring your own ruler. There is a $10 charge for this DEEP.

DIY Craft (DIYC3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Would you like to learn how to make simple elegant decorations that could be used around the house or given as gifts? This DEEP will support those students who are looking to explore their creative side. As an outcome, you will work towards completing the craft project in a professional manner.

Friendship Bracelets (PINB3)

Have you ever wanted to try something crafty? During this session you will be designing and making your very own pin bracelet. You decide what you'd like your design brief to look like - get into action -and start creating!

Get your friends together to form a 3X3 basketball team of 4-5 students to play in our Term 3 module here in the MHJC school gym. 3×3 (pronounced 3 ex 3), also known as street ball or street basketball, is the largest urban team sport in the world and is increasingly becoming an important influence in the development of basketball worldwide. In June 2017, 3×3 was officially announced as a new Olympic sport and was to debut at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Register your team with Miss Kindley to earn your Sporting Cornerstone eBadge.

Advanced Football Boys (AFOT3)

This DEEP is for boys who play football for the school or club. We will develop skills, play conditioned games and look at tactics and strategies. In this deep we will also improve your fitness and preparation for games that you will be playing. This will be in addition to your normal training.

Advanced Hockey (ADHK3)

This DEEP is for students who already know how to play hockey and would like to play for the MHJC team.

Anybody Can Dance (ABCD3)

Dance DEEP is a fun class for students interested in dance, to learn more about different dance styles. Students will learn and create dances that they can perform at school events throughout the year.

Brisk Walking for Fitness (WALK3)

Are you wanting to improve your health? Spend the hour DEEP session improving your base-line fitness and enjoying the outdoors? For this DEEP you must be in your PE gear and sport shoes. You must be willing to walk for the entire one-hour session.

Girls Badminton (BADG3)

Are you interested in Badminton? Then this is for you! Come and develop your skills, learn the game, and perfect your shot! Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament level to represent the school are possible.

Golf (GOLF3)

There is a charge of $40 for this course.
A beginners course in golf covering basic fundamentals. The majority of the course will be held at MHJC. There will also be trips to mini-golf, driving range and 9 holes at Ellerslie golf course.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT3)

This DEEP is only for girls. Are you wanting to improve your fitness for sport or even get fit? This class is for girls of all fitness levels who are willing to give it a go and work hard. HIIT workouts are high intensity but quick! Come to this DEEP prepared to sweat!

Running (RUNW3)

Are you a keen runner? With the passion to overcome obstacles as you are running. Then this DEEP is for you! In this DEEP we will look into different running techniques as well as improving our long distance fitness. As an outcome we will be entering into a running event! If you choose this DEEP you will be RUNNING every week. This is NOT a walking DEEP.

Sasa (SASA3)

Students will be guided into this DEEP in consultation with the Cultural Coordinator. A cultural group dance requiring energy with synchronised movement. The dance is effective with a large group with precision timing. Sasa depicts every day activities and is generally performed in a sitting position but with modern times different formations can be added depending on the skill level of the dancers. In this DEEP students will gain an understanding of the history and cultural significance of the dance and specific Samoan movement and action. Students will have the opportunity to create their own movement to add to the choreography.

Ultimate Frisbee (FRIS3)

This DEEP is an introduction to Ultimate Frisbee. Learn the proper techniques behind throwing a frisbee and then the skills behind playing the game.
