Please read through the DEEP descriptions below for 2021. The DEEP courses are listed in Terms, by category (Discovery, Enrichment, Essentials, Passions, Sports and Learning Advisors), and then by alphabetical order.

Please note that courses with charges are only available to students who have paid their compulsory fees and previous DEEP fees.

Monday

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Beginners and Advanced Guitar (GUIT1)

Can you imagine yourself as a musician? In this DEEP you will learn one of the most popular and versatile instruments - the guitar. You will learn the basics and as an outcome you will work towards playing a simple song of your choice.

Bollywood Dance (BOLY1)

Are you interested in learning the skills and history involved in this dance? Want to spend more of your DEEPs being active? Looking to participate in more school functions? Then join this DEEP!

Cartoon Drawing (CADR1)

Would you like to learn how to hand draw cartoon images? Choose this DEEP to learn how.

Chinese Calligraphy (CCAL1)

You are going to explore different forms of traditional Chinese art, such as Chinese calligraphy and ink wash painting. You will learn how to handle the brush and to use strokes and lines to form Chinese characters and pictures in style. Inspiration will come from well-known artists' work and your own imagination! All are welcome.

E-Pro for Year 7 and 8 (EPRO1)

This DEEP will be a precursor to entering the Epro8 Challenge which is a competition for students from years 7/8 and 9/10. The competition requires a group of . or 4 students to solve a series of given challenges which could incorporate any of these activities:- build large sized structures- solve practical problems- engineer using pulleys, motors, gears, wheels and axles- invent machines that can complete simple tasks- undertake unusual and fun experiments. - construct basic electronic circuits. - solve interesting problems using practical maths. In preparation for the competition students participating in this DEEP will use a variety of construction materials and kits to solve a range of similar challenges. Everyday Japanese (JAPL1)

Introduce yourself to the world of Japanese Language from the expertise of a Japanese teacher.

Fun with Coordinates (FCOR1)

Draw different characters using coordinates. Learn to use coordinate points on a graph paper. Colour your character once finished. (There is a bit of printing involved, so you will need to have printing money.)

Healthy Living (HLIV1)

Try out a new change in lifestyle through yoga, healthy eating, learning the benefits of meditation, positive thinking, creating an healthy awareness each month (eg: Heart Foundation). As an outcome, you will be creating an awareness for healthy living and promoting healthy living in your school and community.

Laser Craft (LASR1)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
A DEEP offering for students who would like to create designs using the laser machine. You will research designs then create and edit a drawing file which the laser machine will cut. You will then assemble your design into a completed 3D outcome which you will take home.

Life Skills (LSKI1)

Learn how to cook a simple meal, change a tyre on a car, find the cheapest food product in the supermarket, sew on a button, be able to read a food label....all the life skills you could need!

Mysterious Monsters (MYMO1)

We will explore this history and psychology behind sightings of mysterious creatures around the world, from Bigfoot and Mothman to the Loch Ness Monster. New Zealand also has has its fair share of mystery creatures from the patupaiarehe (tiny fairy beings from Maori folklore) to sightings of the ‘Coromandel Man’ (New Zealand’s Bigfoot), big cat reports and sightings of giant alligators in the Waikato River during the 1800s. What evidence is there to support the existence of these mystery creatures?

Origami (ORIG1)

Do you like getting creative with your hands? If so, come to this DEEP and learn how to make lanterns, origami, paper sculpturing, kites, and so on.

Sketchup Architecture (SKAR1)

Learn how to plan and design your "dream room" from the ground up. This is a basic introduction to Sketch UP .D architectural software. You need to be able to install SketchUp on your computer to choose this DEEP.

Enrichment
Enrichment courses are designed for students who have found and want to continue to grow an area of strength. Some enrichment courses require a commitment for more than one Term. Please read the course descriptions for details.
Kids Literature Quiz (KLIT1)

You will participate in the Kids Literature Quiz if taking this DEEP. The Kids' Lit Quiz is an annual literature quiz for students aged 10 - 13 years. Teams of four students are asked to answer 100 questions on children’s literature divided into ten categories, which vary each year. You participate in teams and complete against other schools from around the world. Examples of categories set previously include poetry, authors, titles, settings, characters, and nursery rhymes. Between each round, whilst the marking is taking place, the Quizmaster asks questions of the spectators, giving them the chance to win books and coins.

Mathex (MTEX1)

Train and extend our able mathematicians and problem solvers by introducing them to different techniques of problem solving. The top students from this group would then participate in the Auckland Mathex competition.

Photography (PHOT1)

Are you interested in learning some photography skills? Already like taking photos? Want to learn a little about editing. Join this DEEP and learn about all things photography.

Passions
Passion courses are about you designing your programme to reflect your interests to allow students to personalise and exciting learning program. Passions may be selected for more than one Term if desired.
Beginners Yoga (BYOG1)

Please bring your own mat to this class if you have one at home. Ready to try something different that will make you feel calmer, more focused, and stronger? We will be practising postures that will test your mental and physical strength and flexibility, along with breathing exercises and meditation which will help centre and ground your body, mind and spirit.

Clay Creations (CLCR1)

This class would combine clay crafting with food design. Students would be taught techniques of using polymer clay to create realistic looking miniature food. These can be turned into jewellery as a great gift idea. A small fee to cover the cost of materials would apply.

DIY Craft (DIYC1)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Would you like to learn how to make simple elegant decorations that could be used around the house or given as gifts? This DEEP will support those students who are looking to explore their creative side. As an outcome, you will work towards completing the craft project in a professional manner.

Mindful Colouring (MCOL1)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Mindful Colouring asks us to focus on how we choose and apply colour in a design to bring our awareness to the present moment. This process is similar to meditation, we let go of any thoughts about tomorrow or yesterday, or what we are going to do when we finish. You will be able to take home a Mindful Colouring book once fee is paid.

Travelwise (TRAV1)

Are you interested in contributing to an important aspect of the school? This DEEP involves us looking at ways to improve the way we come to and from school and educating our community about safe and sustainable travel. This DEEp will also be looking at awarding a Travelwise certificate for students that complete a safety bike course. Students that are already part of the Travelwise Council will also take part in this DEEP program and if you take part in this DEEP you may be able to permanently join the Travelwise Council.

Trivia (TRVM1)

Would you like to become more knowledgeable about the world around you? In this DEEP you will test your knowledge and your competitive streak while completing a number of trivia quizzes. Expand your knowledge, then challenge yourself and your friends! As an outcome, you will work towards competing in a class quiz at the end of term, with a chance to create your own quiz for your whanau.

Sports
It is important that you consider all 4 Cornerstones when designing your personalised DEEP learning programme. Please make your selections from the list below remembering that you can only select up to two sports courses per term.
Advanced Cones (CONE1)

This DEEP is for confident, capable and competitive students who like to play hard, play fair, and have a good time. You always need your PE gear for this DEEP and be prepared to work hard. This will not be an easy DEEP!

Advanced Cricket (ACRI1)

This DEEP is specifically designed for club cricket players Years 7 and 8. You need to be able to play high-level cricket and are looking to further improve their skills for this season. This DEEP will take place at MHJC using our new cricket nets.

Beginners Basketball (BBAL1)

Are you interested in basketball? Learn all the key skills involved in basketball and work to up your skills.

Beginners Hockey (HOCK1)

This DEEP will let your experience and learn all about street hockey. Street hockey is a fast paced small sided game social game that is played by youth on streets all over the world, it is similar to ice hockey and roller hockey but played on concrete. You will participate in modified games that develop your overall hockey ability. As an outcome, you will create a social lunchtime tournament (you will also participate). The aim of this tournament is to increase the amount of students interested in hockey at MHJC.

Boys Badminton (BADB1)

Are you interested in Badminton? Then this is for you! Come and develop your skills, learn the game, and perfect your shot! Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament level to represent the school are possible.

Football (FBAL1)

Are you a football fan? Come and enjoy a casual game of football with your friends.

Just Dance (JDAN1)

Shake your hips and wave your hands in a fun filled dance activity for one hour. You will also have a chance to choose your own song and dance to selected songs as well.

Pilates (PILA1)

Want to have a toned, lean body then join this pilates class. You will be doing gentle exercises which challenge your core whilst sculpting longer, leaner muscles.

Softball (SOFB1)

Are you interested in playing on the MHJC school team? Come and join this DEEP and improve your skills for game play.

Speed Walking for Fitness (WALK1)

Are you wanting to improve your health? Spend the hour DEEP session improving your base-line fitness and enjoying the outdoors? For this DEEP you must be in your PE gear and sport shoes. You must be willing to walk for the entire one-hour session.

Strength and Conditioning (STRE1)

In this course you will be specifically training to support the needs and demands of your chosen sport. This DEEP will extend your capacity to express yourself physically and mentally at a high level of sports performance. This is an Enrichment DEEP course and will involve physical challenges that will push the body. This DEEP is good preparation for those students that already play or wishing to play at ASB College Sport level or someone trying to make the AIMS team.

Discovery

Baking (BAKT1)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
Do you have a sweet tooth and love to bake? Enrol in baking and learn how to make delicious cookies and cakes. Sweet treats and good eats in the kitchen! Payment for this class needs to be made before class starts. As an outcome, you will be able to take recipes home to make for your family.

Card Games Cadets (CARD1)

Take this DEEP to develop strategic and critical thinking skills through a range of fun card games.

Crochet Crafts (CROC1)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Crochet is a popular needle craft that uses a hook and yarn or thread. We'll teach you how to crochet so that you can start stitching table mats, hats and more.

German Language (BGER1)

If you're ready for another language challenge, why not try German? This is an intermediate class for those who know a little German.

Google Basics! (GOGL1)

Do you know how to set up master documents, indent, create links, add bullet points, high-resolution images and masks? Come and join step-by-step tutorials for mastery of Google slides and more!

KNEX Challenge (KNEX1)

Students will work in collaborative problem solving teams. This is a hands on inquiry based DEEP course that will develop your skills and knowledge of STEM related concepts. Known to be the worlds most creative construction toy, K’nex is put to the test in this architectural class! Put your fine motor and spatial skills and creativity to great use by exploring basic engineering and design concepts and principles to solve problems/challenges.

Line and Design Art (LDAR1)

Have fun with vivid markers, dyes and paints to create some wicked artworks. All sorts of techniques and processes will be covered

Mindful Reading (MIRE1)

Are you struggling to relax? Need to new way to wind down? Do you also like reading. Reading can be a great form of relaxation and staying connected with yourself. In this DEEP you will be reading as a way to practice mindfulness.

Raranga (RARA1)

In this DEEP you will be introduced to the art of Maori Weaving through an expert.

The truth about UFOs (SUFO1)

Did a flying saucer crash in the desert near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947? For hundreds of years people have reported strange objects in the sky. Some even claim to have been abducted by extraterrestrials. Are UFOs real? What is the evidence that ETs have visited us and are abducting people? Does the New Zealand government know more than the are telling and is there a cover-up?

WASJ (WASJ1)

WASGIJ is "jigsaw" spelled backwards, is an innovative puzzle concept in which the picture on the box is merely a clue for the puzzle you will be putting together. The image on the box depicts a cartoonish scene of surprise and tumult. This DEEP will help increased your problem solving skills and get your imagination working.

Maths Problem Solving (MPRO1)

Do you love Mathematics and are good at Maths Problem solving?? Do you like to enter in Maths competitions. This DEEP is for you. In this DEEP you will be prepared for Maths competitions. Suitable for all year levels

Boys Writing (BWT31)

This DEEP is designed to help boys who are having difficulty writing find enjoyment in writing through a targeted writing programme. Learners in this DEEP with also be provided with additional support mastering the SEXY paragraph structure. As an outcome, students will be able to write SEXY paragraphs independently and will have created at least one piece of creative writing using a 'story starter'.

Comic Book Creator (CBCR1)

Use Krita software to create your own hilarious comic strip. Basic character creation and digital manipulation will be taught so you can bring your ideas to life. You need to download the free Krita digital paint program onto your device to take this DEEP (https://krita.org/en/).

Creative Minds with LEGO (LEGO1)

In this DEEP you will unleash your imagination and creativity and use your logic thinking and constructive problem solving skills alongside with LEGO to build different and an unlimited number of objects.

Eco Warrior (ECOW1)

Are you concerned about climate change and our environment? Would you like to learn about protecting our planet and becoming a change maker and making a positive difference to our school, community, city, country and planet? In this DEEP we will look at recycling, pest control, plant protection and learning about positive ways to make a difference to where we live. You will have the opportunity to be empowered to create ideas to make a positive change. This DEEP will also involve the current Enviro Council students and if you are passionate and contribute to this DEEP you will have an opportunity to join this School Council. This DEEP may involve some small field trips. We need a dedicated team to move us in the right direction. Please only apply if you think this DEEP suits your passion for the environment.

Electronic Music (EMUS1)

This DEEP is for students that have an interest in creating original music using digital technologies - alongside or in place of traditional instruments. You will learn the basics of using music software to create your own music and have it presented. Prior knowledge of playing an instrument or music theory is not necessary. As an outcome, you can have your work presented to an audience.

Jazz Band (JAZZ1)

A DEEP for advanced musical students looking to further their musical abilities playing jazz. Students from this DEEP will be performing in different school events

Minecraft (MINE1)

This DEEP is for experienced Minecraft builders only. You need to have a device with the full application already downloaded/purchased. For this DEEP class you will be required to enter one of the monthly competitions at "Planet Minecraft Contests" These are monthly community contests with themes, judges and prizes, pixel art trophies and recognition! MIT App Inventor (MITA1)

MIT App Inventor is a visual programming environment that allows you to build fully functional apps for smartphones and tablets. You will be able to use blocks-based coding programs. So, if you want to move from technology consumption to technology creation then this DEEP is the right one for you. You will need a Windows or Mac for this DEEP.

School Outreach (SOUT1)

In this DEEP, you will work with the local primary schools in the capacities they need. This might be reading with younger students. Assisting teachers with younger students with art projects. Any activities that local primary teachers may need assistance with in the classroom. WPAC - completing this DEEP for a term will go towards your 20 hours of community service.

Short Film Creations (SFCR1)

All aspiring filmmakers wanted for this exciting introductory DEEP on film creation. Bring along a camera or phone, and a sense of wild curiosity.

Trivia (TRVM1)

What if..... (WHAT1)

This is a DEEP course focused on Curiosity, Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving. Einstein once said “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.” Curiosity is at the core of creative thinking. It's creative thinking combined with critical thinking that gives all of us the best chance at becoming super problem solvers. You will be given the freedom through problem-solving to explore issues you are curious about. Curiosity boosts creative thinking which in turn works with critical thinking to lead to better problem solving. Curiosity keeps the mind active, nimble and able to notice useful things!

Sports

Advanced Hockey (ADHK1)

This DEEP is for students who already know how to play hockey and would like to play for the MHJC team.

Advanced Volleyball (AVOL1)

This DEEP is for students who already know how to play volleyball and would like to play for the MHJC team.

Board Games (BOGA1)

Learn to play a variety of board games and maybe even find a new favourite to teach your family.

Circuit Workout (CIWO1)

In this DEEP you will progress through a variety of exercise stations to improve your physical fitness.

Running (RUNM1)

Are you a keen runner? With the passion to overcome obstacles as you are running. Then this DEEP is for you! In this DEEP we will look into different running techniques as well as improving our long distance fitness. As an outcome we will be entering into a running event! If you choose this DEEP you will be RUNNING every week. This is NOT a walking DEEP.

Sasa (SASA1)

Students will be guided into this DEEP in consultation with the Cultural Coordinator. A cultural group dance requiring energy with synchronised movement. The dance is effective with a large group with precision timing. Sasa depicts every day activities and is generally performed in a sitting position but with modern times different formations can be added depending on the skill level of the dancers. In this DEEP students will gain an understanding of the history and cultural significance of the dance and specific Samoan movement and action. Students will have the opportunity to create their own movement to add to the choreography.

Volleyball (VOLL1)

Advanced Music Performance (ADMP1)

This DEEP is for students that are proficient at an instrument or vocals. Students will rehearse for upcoming performance opportunities with support and feedback from the teacher. Both solo and band/ensemble performers are welcome. As an outcome, students will work towards performing at an event such as Community Day, RockQuest, Talent Quest, music exams, an assembly or any other performance opportunity.

Alphabet Stew (ALST1)

The perfect How-To-Draw-Cartoons for beginners! Learn how to draw wacky cartoons from every letter of the alphabet.

Book Club (BCLU1)

Are you struggling to relax? Need to new way to wind down? Do you also like reading. Reading can be a great form of relaxation and staying connected with yourself. In this DEEP you will be reading as a way to practice mindfulness.

Chinese Cooking (CCOO1)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
This DEEP will teach you how to make traditional Chinese food. You will learn the tricks behind making amazing dumplings, fried rice, and spring rolls. You will work towards learning cooking safety to utilize at home and be able to cook traditional meals on your own.

Comic Book Illustration (COMI1)

Do you read comics? Learn how to tell a story through graphic illustrations and learn how to draw by.

Dungeons and Dragons (DUNG1)

Learn how to cooperate with a group and solve all kinds of problems though playing the tabletop game Dungeons and Dragons

Create beautiful life memories using your creativity and artistic skills.

The Evidence for haunted houses (EHAH1)

We will examine the scientific evidence the most famous hauntings in history, from The Conjuring to The Amityville Horror. What is the evidence that something supernatural or paranormal is taking place or can science explain these events as something natural?

Website Development (WEBD1)

There is a charge of $15 for this course.
Would you like to develop the art of creating your own website? Then this DEEP is for you.

Whanau Art (WHAR1)

Have the opportunity to come and make some art for your central Whanau space. There will be opportunities for independent and group tasks throughout the term and lots of different media

Do you enjoy writing for fun? Stories, poems, journals, etc. Then this DEEP is for you. It will also help to improve your overall writing abilities in a fun and creative way.

Tournament of Minds (TOMS1)

If you think outside the square, love to solve demanding and open-ended challenges then TOM is for you. Tournament of Minds is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way. Pre-requisite: The ability to pay the entry fee if selected in the team - $25 and if we proceed to nationals/internationals - travel costs and accommodation.

Book vs Film (BOVF1)

Book vs Film- Do you have a passion for good books or films? A popular book will be read to you as a class, then we will watch the film based on that book and discuss the differences and what is better.

Chinese Bracelets (CHBR1)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Starting from a traditional Asian basic plaiting, students will learn how to make bracelets from strings. Students will also have opportunity to learn some Chinese decorative knots in the class. Please bring your own ruler. There is a $10 charge for this DEEP.

E-Sports (ESPO1)

Course requirement - be able to download the games onto your individual devices at home and be able to play them off-line. Also known as electronic sports, e-sports, or eSports) is a form of competition using video games. Most commonly, eSports takes the form of organised, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between players and teams.

Forensic Science Investigation (FOSI1)

Would you like to be a CIA or Mi5 agent? Collect, identify, classify, and analyse physical evidence related to criminal investigations. ... Forensic science aid criminal investigations by collecting and analysing evidence.

3x3 Basketball (3X3B1)

Get your friends together to form a 3X3 basketball team of 4-5 students to play in our Term 3 module here in the MHJC school gym. 3×3 (pronounced 3 ex 3), also known as street ball or street basketball, is the largest urban team sport in the world and is increasingly becoming an important influence in the development of basketball worldwide. In June 2017, 3×3 was officially announced as a new Olympic sport and was to debut at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Register your team with Miss Kindley to earn your Sporting Cornerstone eBadge.

Anybody Can Dance (ABCD1)

Dance DEEP is a fun class for students interested in dance, to learn more about different dance styles. Students will learn and create dances that they can perform at school events throughout the year.

Beginners Table Tennis (BTTE1)

Come explore the world of Table Tennis, from a coach who has played it at National Level

Brisk Walking for Fitness (WALK1)

Are you wanting to improve your health? Spend the hour DEEP session improving your base-line fitness and enjoying the outdoors? For this DEEP you must be in your PE gear and sport shoes. You must be willing to walk for the entire one-hour session.

Circuit Workout (CIWO1)

In this DEEP you will progress through a variety of exercise stations to improve your physical fitness.

Girls Badminton (BADG1)

Are you interested in Badminton? Then this is for you! Come and develop your skills, learn the game, and perfect your shot! Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament level to represent the school are possible.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT1)

HIIT stands for high-intensity interval training, which refers to the short bursts of intense exercise alternated with low-intensity recovery periods that make up the protocol.

Running (RUNW1)

Are you a keen runner? With the passion to overcome obstacles as you are running. Then this DEEP is for you! In this DEEP we will look into different running techniques as well as improving our long distance fitness. As an outcome we will be entering into a running event! If you choose this DEEP you will be RUNNING every week. This is NOT a walking DEEP.

Ultimate Frisbee (FRIS1)

This DEEP is an introduction to Ultimate Frisbee. Learn the proper techniques behind throwing a frisbee and then the skills behind playing the game.
