Please read through the DEEP descriptions below for 2020. The DEEP courses are listed in Terms, by category (Discovery, Enrichment, Essentials, Passions, Sports and Learning Advisors), and then by alphabetical order.

Please note that courses with charges are only available to students who have paid their compulsory fees and previous DEEP fees.

Monday

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Be an Architect with SketchUp (SKET3)

Learn how to plan and design your "dream room" from the ground up. This is a basic introduction to Sketch UP 3D architectural software. You need to be able to install SketchUp on your computer to choose this DEEP.

Beginners and Advanced Guitar (GUIT3)

Can you imagine yourself as a musician? In this DEEP you will learn one of the most popular and versatile instruments - the guitar. You will learn the basics and as an outcome you will work towards playing a simple song of your choice.

Book Club (BCLU3)

Are you struggling to relax? Need to new way to wind down? Do you also like reading. Reading can be a great form of relaxation and staying connected with yourself. In this DEEP you will be reading as a way to practice mindfulness.

Cartoon Drawing (CART3)

Would you like to learn how to hand draw cartoon images? Choose this DEEP to learn how.

Chinese Calligraphy (CCAL3)

You are going to explore different forms of traditional Chinese art, such as Chinese calligraphy and ink wash painting. You will learn how to handle the brush and to use strokes and lines to form Chinese characters and pictures in style. Inspiration will come from well-known artists' work and your own imagination! All are welcome.

Laser Craft (LASR3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
A DEEP offering for students who would like to create designs using the laser machine. You will research designs then create and edit a drawing file which the laser machine will cut. You will then assemble your design into a completed 3D outcome which you will take home.

Lets Travel (LETT3)

Plan you or your family's next holiday! In this DEEP we will learn how to create travel itineraries, manage your budget before and while travelling (including currency exchange), overcoming language barriers and more as we explore the world and look at places we want to visit.

Life Skills (LSKI3)

Learn how to cook a simple meal, change a tyre on a car, find the cheapest food product in the supermarket, sew on a button, be able to read a food label....all the life skills you could need!

Ngā Toi Māori (Māori Arts) (NGAT3)

This course will look at the Māori arts of whakairo (carving), tukutuku (wall panels), kowhaiwhai (patterns), and raranga (weaving). Students will be pre-selected and will work on designing and making a tomokanga (entrance way), heke (ceiling panels) and tukutuku (wall panels) for the school.

Origami (ORIG3)

Do you like getting creative with your hands? If so, come to this DEEP and learn how to make lanterns, origami, paper sculpturing, kites, and so on.

Short Film Creation (SFIL3)

All aspiring filmmakers wanted for this exciting introductory DEEP on film creation. Bring along a camera or phone, and a sense of wild curiosity.

Soap Making (SOAP3)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
Are you interested in making your own soap and other bath products? Do you like natural products similar to those from Lush? In this DEEP, you will learn the science behind soap making. You will make and package your own soap to take home or give away as gifts. Learn these skills so you can further make products at home.

Te Reo Māori (TERO3)

- Are you looking to boost your knowledge, fluency and confidence in Te Reo Māori? This DEEP will help you improve your pronunciation, basic sentence structures and tikanga Māori.

Enrichment
Enrichment courses are designed for students who have found and want to continue to grow an area of strength. Some enrichment courses require a commitment for more than one Term. Please read the course descriptions for details.
Kids Literature Quiz (KLIT3)

You will participate in the Kids Literature Quiz if taking this DEEP. The Kids' Lit Quiz is an annual literature quiz for students aged 10 - 13 years. Teams of four students are asked to answer 100 questions on children’s literature divided into ten categories, which vary each year. You participate in teams and complete against other schools from around the world. Examples of categories set previously include poetry, authors, titles, settings, characters, and nursery rhymes. Between each round, whilst the marking is taking place, the Quizmaster asks questions of the spectators, giving them the chance to win books and coins.

Maths Problem Solving (MPRO3)

Do you love Mathematics and are good at Maths Problem solving?? Do you like to enter in Maths competitions. This DEEP is for you. In this DEEP you will be prepared for Maths competitions. Suitable for all year levels

Photography (PHOT3)

Are you interested in learning some photography skills? Already like taking photos? Want to learn a little about editing. Join this DEEP and learn about all things photography.

Creative Minds with LEGO (LEGO3)

In this DEEP you will unleash your imagination and creativity and use your logic thinking and constructive problem solving skills alongside with LEGO to build different and an unlimited number of objects.

DIY Craft (DIYC3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Would you like to learn how to make simple elegant decorations that could be used around the house or given as gifts? This DEEP will support those students who are looking to explore their creative side. As an outcome, you will work towards completing the craft project in a professional manner.

Musical Props (MUSP3)

We are looking for students who are interested in helping to make props and artwork to decorate the theatre for the Musical. It will be artwork based around the rock 'n' roll era and Elvis. If you think you are a talented drawer and painter then come and join in.

Songs and Speeches that Changed the World (SSPE3)

Discover the songs and speeches that inspired millions and changed the very fabric of society. This is your chance your discover how change was created through lyrics and verse

Sudoku Therapy (SUDO3)

Join this DEEP to develop and/or strengthen logical thinking and concentration skills

Traditional Friendship Bracelets (FREI3)

Transform pieces of string into colourful creations! In this DEEP you will learn how to make a variety of friendship bracelets using simple knots and patterns. Once you have mastered the basics you will be free to experiment with designs of your choice. As an outcome, you will work towards creating a meaningful and original bracelet to give to someone as a gift.

Wearable Arts (WEAR3)

Wow is a renowned international design competition that attracts hundreds of entries from all over the world. This DEEP is for students who have entered in the school competition to help support their creative developments and enable them to have teacher support to work to achieve in this competition.

Sports
It is important that you consider all 4 Cornerstones when designing your personalised DEEP learning programme. Please make your selections from the list below remembering that you can only select up to two sports courses per term.
Beginners Hockey (HOCK3)

This DEEP will let your experience and learn all about street hockey. Street hockey is a fast paced small sided game social game that is played by youth on streets all over the world, it is similar to ice hockey and roller hockey but played on concrete. You will participate in modified games that develop your overall hockey ability. As an outcome, you will create a social lunchtime tournament (you will also participate). The aim of this tournament is to increase the amount of students interested in hockey at MHJC.

Boys Badminton (BADB3)

Are you interested in Badminton? Then this is for you! Come and develop your skills, learn the game, and perfect your shot! Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament level to represent the school are possible.

Jump Jam (JJAM3)

Jump Jam is a kids aerobics resource created by Brett Fairweather. If you'd like to keep fit while having fun, then this is the class for you. This class caters for all levels of fitness. So come along... all you need is your PE gear, a load of enthusiasm.... and plenty of energy to have fun!

Running (RUNM3)

Are you a keen runner? With the passion to overcome obstacles as you are running. Then this DEEP is for you! In this DEEP we will look into different running techniques as well as improving our long distance fitness. As an outcome we will be entering into a running event! If you choose this DEEP you will be RUNNING every week. This is NOT a walking DEEP.

Speed Walking for Fitness (WALK3)

Are you wanting to improve your health? Spend the hour DEEP session improving your base-line fitness and enjoying the outdoors? For this DEEP you must be in your PE gear and sport shoes. You must be willing to walk for the entire one-hour session.

Sports Fruit Salad (SPSA3)

Sports Fruit Salad- Are you a keen sports and games player? This DEEP will focus on recreation games and sports, looking into a new sport every week! As an outcome you will be running a recreation afternoon for a younger age group.

Ultimate Frisbee (UFRI3)

Ultimate Frisbee is a fast pace non-contact invasion game using a flying disc (Frisbee). The intention is to create a friendly, fun but still competitive playing environment. You will require your PE gear for this D.E.E.P and must be ready to move a lot.

Discovery

Asian Animation Appreciation (ANIM3)

A fun and engaging DEEP to explore and embrace the cultural and universal moral values portrayed in Asian animation

Board Games (BGMT3)

Learn to play a variety of board games and maybe even find a new favourite to teach your family.

Card Games Cadets (CARD3)

Take this DEEP to develop strategic and critical thinking skills through a range of fun card games.

Chinese Cooking (CCOO3)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
This DEEP will teach you how to make traditional Chinese food. You will learn the tricks behind making amazing dumplings, fried rice, and spring rolls. You will work towards learning cooking safety to utilize at home and be able to cook traditional meals on your own.

Crafting (CRAF3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
A variety of craft projects such as dream catchers, embellished lanterns, button/string art, embroidery, fabric craft, wood projects

Everyday Japanese (EJAP3)

In this DEEP you will learn some simple words and phrases to allow you to have a simple conversation in Japanese.

German Language (BGER3)

If you're ready for another language challenge, why not try German? This is a basic beginners class for those who don't know any German at all. You will learn a little about Germany, and basics in the German language.

Korean Time (KORE3)

Whether you’re a BTS fan or just curious about all things Korean come and join us on a ‘Korean Time’ journey where we will learn to write, read , and pronounce Hangul (the Korean alphabet), while at the same time being captivated by its brilliance and beauty. Voted by UNESCO as the most logical and scientific of all writing systems in the world! (Students will need an exercise book (1B8) to write in.)

Math Art (MART3)

Use for of art to express yourself mathematically. Learn to use a compass. Bisect angles and lines to create an art form. Learn to use dots to create a geometric design. As an outcome You will develop a good understanding of geometric terms and skills.

Are you interested in the wonders of our natural world? Learn more about our most interesting animals and plants, their families and their ancestors.

Piano for Beginners (PIAN3)

Interested in increasing your music knowledge? Learn basic chords, note names, note values, treble and bass clefs, 4/4 time signature, and to read simple music in this beginners piano DEEP.

Podcasting (PODC3)

The audio component promotes a deeper connection between the speaker and listener. In this DEEP you will listen to a variety of educational, entertaining and interesting podcasts from around the world.

Scrapbooking (SCRP3)

Create beautiful life memories using your creativity and artistic skills.

WASGIJ DEEP (WASJ3)

WASGIJ is "jigsaw" spelled backwards, is an innovative puzzle concept in which the picture on the box is merely a clue for the puzzle you will be putting together. The image on the box depicts a cartoonish scene of surprise and tumult. This DEEP will help increased your problem solving skills and get your imagination working.

GATE Art (GAAR3)

This DEEP is for pre-selected students.

Orchestra (ORCH3)

This DEEP is for students who have had previous lessons with their instrument. Are you keen to put you skills to work in a band? Then this is the DEEP for you! Auditions will be carried out in the first DEEP sessions to make sure you are proficient with your instrument.

Photography (PHOT3)

Are you interested in learning some photography skills? Already like taking photos? Want to learn a little about editing. Join this DEEP and learn about all things photography.

Tahi Rua Toru Tech (TAHI3)

123Tech is New Zealand’s exciting new digital challenge for school students built around the successful TechHub Challenge. Through 123Tech, you get an opportunity ti solve problems in your local school or community using digital technologies - and have fun along the way!

English Level 2: Reading and Writing (EWT23)

For students working at Curriculum Level 2 who would like to receive additional help with their Written Language. Students will develop their understanding of the surface and deeper features of quality writing, through a range of fun and effective learning activities.

Comic Book Creator (COMI3)

Use Krita software to create your own hilarious comic strip. Basic character creation and digital manipulation will be taught so you can bring your ideas to life. You need to download the free Krita digital paint program onto your device to take this DEEP (https://krita.org/en/).

Creative Minds with LEGO (LEGO3)

In this DEEP you will unleash your imagination and creativity and use your logic thinking and constructive problem solving skills alongside with LEGO to build different and an unlimited number of objects.

E-Sports (ESPO3)

Course requirement - be able to download the games onto your individual devices at home and be able to play them off-line. Also known as electronic sports, e-sports, or eSports) is a form of competition using video games. Most commonly, eSports takes the form of organised, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between players and teams.

Eco Warrior (ECOW3)

Are you concerned about climate change and our environment? Would you like to learn about protecting our planet and becoming a change maker and making a positive difference to our school, community, city, country and planet? In this DEEP we will look at recycling, pest control, plant protection and learning about positive ways to make a difference to where we live. You will have the opportunity to be empowered to create ideas to make a positive change. This DEEP will also involve the current Enviro Council students and if you are passionate and contribute to this DEEP you will have an opportunity to join this School Council. This DEEP may involve some small field trips. We need a dedicated team to move us in the right direction. Please only apply if you think this DEEP suits your passion for the environment.

Electronic Music (EMUS3)

This DEEP is for students that have an interest in creating original music using digital technologies - alongside or in place of traditional instruments. You will learn the basics of using music software to create your own music and have it presented. Prior knowledge of playing an instrument or music theory is not necessary. As an outcome, you can have your work presented to an audience.

Mindful Colouring (MCOL3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Unwind yourself after a busy day at school, while pursuing your passion of art and creativity. Mindful colouring helps you calm your mind down and is a popular form of mindfulness. The $10 cost is for students who would like to purchase a mindful colouring activity book to take home at the end of the term. Students who have their own books and colouring pencils, do not have to pay.

Sasa Dance (SASA3)

Students will be guided into this DEEP in consultation with the Cultural Coordinator. A cultural group dance requiring energy with synchronised movement. The dance is effective with a large group with precision timing. Sasa depicts every day activities and is generally performed in a sitting position but with modern times different formations can be added depending on the skill level of the dancers. In this DEEP students will gain an understanding of the history and cultural significance of the dance and specific Samoan movement and action. Students will have the opportunity to create their own movement to add to the choreography.

Advanced Cones (CONE3)

This DEEP is for confident, capable and competitive students who like to play hard, play fair, and have a good time. You always need your PE gear for this DEEP and be prepared to work hard. This will not be an easy DEEP!

Advanced Football (AFOT3)

This DEEP is for students who are wanting to trial for the Year 9 and 10 football team.

Beginners and Advanced Chess (CHES3)

There is a charge of $85 for this course.
This DEEP is for students who have already gained some knowledge in the field of Chess and would like to extend themselves further or would like to learn the game of chess. The students from this DEEP could be selected to compete against top teams from other schools.

Beginners Basketball (BBAL3)

Are you interested in basketball? Learn all the key skills involved in basketball and work to up your skills in order to play basketball for MHJC. Work through to potentially trial for an MHJC team.

Girls Badminton (BADG3)

Are you interested in Badminton? Then this is for you! Come and develop your skills, learn the game, and perfect your shot! Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament level to represent the school are possible.

Alphabet Stew - Cartoon Drawing (ALPH3)

The perfect How-To-Draw-Cartoons for beginners! Learn how to draw wacky cartoons from every letter of the alphabet.

Baking (BAKT3)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
Do you have a sweet tooth and love to bake? Enrol in baking and learn how to make delicious cookies and cakes. Sweet treats and good eats in the kitchen! Payment for this class needs to be made before class starts. As an outcome, you will be able to take recipes home to make for your family.

Dungeons and Dragons (DUNG3)

Learn how to cooperate with a group and solve all kinds of problems though playing the tabletop game Dungeons and Dragons

Forensic Science Investigation (FORI3)

Would you like to be a CIA or Mi5 agent? Collect, identify, classify, and analyse physical evidence related to criminal investigations. ... Forensic science aid criminal investigations by collecting and analysing evidence.

Frame It (FRAM3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Do you have a precious photo or message you would like to display? Learn how to make a custom wooden picture frame or blackboard to proudly show your greatest memories. You will be working with saws, wood and glue.

I Love Tea Time (TEAT3)

In this DEEP students will learn the different types of tea, and find how they taste. Experience tea ceremonies. Explore ideas of making new types of tea. Be creative for making your own tea.

Japanese Letters and Language (JAPL3)

Introduce yourself to the world of Japanese Language from the expertise of a Japanese teacher.

Journal Creation (JOUC3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Enjoy making your own junk journal starting with the cover, inside pages, embellishing and final assembly. There will also be the opportunity to create a simple mini journal and a journal cover.

KNEX Challenge Year 7 and 8 Only (KNEX3)

Students will work in collaborative problem solving teams. This is a hands on inquiry based DEEP course that will develop your skills and knowledge of STEM related concepts. Known to be the worlds most creative construction toy, K’nex is put to the test in this architectural class! Put your fine motor and spatial skills and creativity to great use by exploring basic engineering and design concepts and principles to solve problems/challenges.

Scratch (SCRT3)

With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations — and share your creations with others in the online community. Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century. Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. It is provided free of charge. More information can be found at https://scratch.mit.edu/

Stop Motion Animation (STOP3)

This DEEP combines both creativity, technology and computing. Students will use Stop Motion Animation (or Object animation) which is an animation technique that physically manipulates an object so that it appears to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a fast sequence. Stop Motion Animation using plasticine is called clay animation or clay-mation. Stop motion with 3D printed objects is also possible.

The World Through the Eyes of Sir David Attenborough (DAVI3)

Explore the natural world through the eyes of Sir David Attenborough, who has travelled around the world ten times over to document the natural phenomena that happen everyday. We will be investigating life on Earth, constituting a comprehensive survey of plant and animal life on Earth. Born in 1926, he has seen the effects of the second phase of the industrial revolution, and continued through the science and digital revolution. His latest works Planet Earth, at the age of 93, may be his last legacy as he documents how global warming is affecting the home we share with infinite sentient life forms, known as Earth.

Website Development (WEBD3)

Art Attack (ARTA3)

Come learn the tricks of art through visual exploration and interaction. Express yourself through creativity.

Creative Writing (CREW3)

Do you enjoy writing for fun? Stories, poems, journals, etc. Then this DEEP is for you. It will also help to improve your overall writing abilities in a fun and creative way.

Design and Visual Communication (DVC) (DVCD3)

Have you ever wanted to develop your design and drawing skills? In this DEEP you will have the opportunity to build and develop a range of design skills. You will be provided with design tools that enable you to design and draw different 2D and 3D shapes.

Mural Art (MURA3)

Be part of the team to create a beautiful and unique piece of art work for the school. Mural art, is any piece of artwork painted or applied directly on a wall, ceiling or other permanent surfaces. A distinguishing characteristic of mural painting is that the architectural elements of the given space are harmoniously incorporated into the picture.

Boys Writing (BWW23)

This DEEP is designed to help boys who are having difficulty writing find enjoyment in writing through a targeted writing programme. Learners in this DEEP with also be provided with additional support mastering the SEXY paragraph structure. As an outcome, students will be able to write SEXY paragraphs independently and will have created at least one piece of creative writing using a 'story starter'.

Production Band (PENB3)

Students that wish to be in the band for this year's production, All Shook Up, can sign up for this DEEP. You must be comfortable performing at a high level on an instrument - both as a soloist and as part of a group. If accepted into the band, members must be able to attend rehearsals not only during DEEP, but also an after school rehearsal session and alternating weekends.

Production Dance (PDAN3)

This DEEP is for students who have been selected for dance parts in the school production.

Chinese Square Dance (CHDA3)

You will learn a popular Chinese pastime, Chinese square dance. You will dance in a group accompanied with rhythmic traditional Chinese music. There might be opportunities to perform in front of an audience.

Green Thumbs (GRET3)

Gardening is one of the healthiest hobbies you can have. Successful gardening can be achieved by anyone. Gardening is about experimentation. There is really no right or wrong. You learn as you go, and you find what works for you. So join in this DEEP to see what we can grow in our gardens.

Minecraft (MINE3)

Would you like to use your creative, artistic and technology skills to be an architect? The Minecraft DEEP is for students who have some experience in using minecraft. You can only join this DEEP, if you can install or have already installed minecraft in your device.

Pin Bracelets (PINB3)

Have you ever wanted to try something crafty? During this session you will be designing and making your very own pin bracelet. You decide what you'd like your design brief to look like - get into action -and start creating!

Trivia (TRVW3)

Sports

Animal Kung Fu (ANKU3)

Are you interested in learning the sport of Kung Fu? Then this DEEP is for you! Learn all about the sport through a completely hands-on and practical session.

Beginners Football Girls (GFOT3)

Are you looking at learning some football skills? Learn the rules of the game? You will do this through playing mini games of football on the field. This is for beginners only!

Circuit Workout (CIRW3)

In this DEEP you will progress through a variety of exercise stations to improve your physical fitness.

Just Dance (JDAN3)

Shake your hips and wave your hands in a fun filled dance activity for one hour. You will also have a chance to choose your own song and dance to selected songs as well.

Sports Psychology (PSYC3)

Get an insight into how some of the World's top sporting athletes train, think, prepare, play and outsmart opponents. What makes a great player? Their upbringing, coaches, environment, education? From Pele to Mohammed Ali to Steffi Graf to Steven Gerrard to Michael Jordan. If you're a sports fan as well as an aspiring player this DEEP is a must for you.

Street Hockey (SHOC3)

This DEEP will let your experience and learn all about street hockey. Street hockey is a fast paced small sided game social game that is played by youth on streets all over the world, it is similar to ice hockey and roller hockey but played on concrete. You will participate in modified games that develop your overall hockey ability. As an outcome, you will create a social lunchtime tournament (you will also participate). The aim of this tournament is to increase the amount of students interested in hockey at MHJC.

Strength and Conditioning (STRE3)

In this course you will be specifically training to support the needs and demands of your chosen sport. This DEEP will extend your capacity to express yourself physically and mentally at a high level of sports performance. This is an Enrichment DEEP course and will involve physical challenges that will push the body. This DEEP is good preparation for those students that already play or wishing to play at ASB College Sport level or someone trying to make the AIMS team.

Card Games Cadets (CARD3)

Take this DEEP to develop strategic and critical thinking skills through a range of fun card games.

Chinese Calligraphy (CCAL3)

You are going to explore different forms of traditional Chinese art, such as Chinese calligraphy and ink wash painting. You will learn how to handle the brush and to use strokes and lines to form Chinese characters and pictures in style. Inspiration will come from well-known artists' work and your own imagination! All are welcome.

Clay Treasures (CLAY3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Get your hands dirty with some clay and make some treasures.Every two weeks we will try some different techniques and then create something out of clay. It will be fired in the school kiln and you can decorate work and take it home for a present for someone or just to admire on a shelf in your home.

Comic Book Illustration (COMI3)

Do you read comics? Learn how to tell a story through graphic illustrations and learn how to draw by.

Fun with Coordinates (FCOR3)

Draw different characters using coordinates. Learn to use coordinate points on a graph paper. Colour your character once finished. (There is a bit of printing involved, so you will need to have printing money.)

Healthy Living (HEAL3)

Try out a new change in lifestyle through yoga,healthy eating,learning the benefits of meditation,positive thinking ,creating an healthy awareness each month (eg: Heart Foundation).As an outcome, you will be creating an awareness for healthy living and promoting healthy living in your school and community.

Laser Craft (LASR3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
A DEEP offering for students who would like to create designs using the laser machine. You will research designs then create and edit a drawing file which the laser machine will cut. You will then assemble your design into a completed 3D outcome which you will take home.

Literacy Puzzles (LITP3)

Literacy Puzzles - Improve English language skills through literacy based puzzles, games and lots of engaging activities

Pencil Sketches (PSKE3)

Do you like sketching? Interested in learning how to create new drawings with just pencil. Come join this DEEP.

Pop Up Cards (POPU3)

Learn how cutting and folding card can be used to create crazy in-your-face creations. A perfect gift for birthdays or other celebrations.

Sewing (SEWI3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Relax and unwind while enjoying and exploring the world of sewing. You will be completing different sewing projects in this DEEP

Word Power (WPOW3)

If you enjoy word searches, cross words, spelling bees and vocabulary kahoots, this DEEP is for you.

Enrichment

Advanced Mindfulness (ADMN3)

Did you complete a Discovery Mindfulness DEEP course previously? Enrich your understanding and practice of mindfulness with this DEEP.

Aspiring Leaders (ASPL3)

Come and find out the secrets of leaders and grow the leadership qualities in you. We will also help you to strengthen your interpersonal skills, public speaking skills, overall confidence in effectively dealing people with a growth mindset… and much more.

Build a Bridge Competition (BRID3)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
In this DEEP students will enter the Aurecon bridge building competition in which they will digitally design a bridge and then build it out of a kit of materials.

EPro Challenge (EPRO3)

The EPro Challenge is a competition, an engineering and problem solving race. Every year over 9000 students from 800 schools from throughout New Zealand take part. In this DEEP you will learn how to build structures, complete electrical circuits, solve engaging problems, and investigate engaging science experiments.

Tournament of Minds (TOMS3)

If you think outside the square, love to solve demanding and open-ended challenges then TOM is for you. Tournament of Minds is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way.

Production Band (PENB3)

Students that wish to be in the band for this year's production, All Shook Up, can sign up for this DEEP. You must be comfortable performing at a high level on an instrument - both as a soloist and as part of a group. If accepted into the band, members must be able to attend rehearsals not only during DEEP, but also an after school rehearsal session and alternating weekends.

Mindful Reading (MREA3)

Are you struggling to relax? Need to new way to wind down? Do you also like reading. Reading can be a great form of relaxation and staying connected with yourself. In this DEEP you will be reading as a way to practice mindfulness.

School Outreach (SOUT3)

In this DEEP, you will work with the local primary schools in the capacities they need. This might be reading with younger students. Assisting teachers with younger students with art projects. Any activities that local primary teachers may need assistance with in the classroom. WPAC - completing this DEEP for a term will go towards your 20 hours of community service.

Traditional Friendship Bracelets (FREI3)

Transform pieces of string into colourful creations! In this DEEP you will learn how to make a variety of friendship bracelets using simple knots and patterns. Once you have mastered the basics you will be free to experiment with designs of your choice. As an outcome, you will work towards creating a meaningful and original bracelet to give to someone as a gift.

Travelwise (TRAV3)

Are you interested in improving your cycling skills and becoming a Bike Ambassador for MHJC? Are you interested in educating our community about safer and environmentally friendly ways to get to school and around your neighbourhood? This DEEP will involve some biking skills as well as creating a campaign about safe travel, not using cars and promoting this positively to our community. This is mainly for students in the Travelwise Council but if you also wish to join this DEEP then you are welcome.

This DEEP is for students in any of the MHJC teams and would like to improve their skills in basketball.

Advanced Cones (CONE3)

This DEEP is for confident, capable and competitive students who like to play hard, play fair, and have a good time. You always need your PE gear for this DEEP and be prepared to work hard. This will not be an easy DEEP!
