Please note that courses with charges are only available to students who have paid their compulsory fees and previous DEEP fees.

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Alexander Hamilton & American History (ALEX4)

Dive deeper than the hit musical in this exciting American History course! Unwrap the real story of Alexander Hamilton, his influence on the Founding Fathers, and the critical events that shaped the birth of our nation. Analyse sources, engage in discussions, and explore beyond the lyrics to understand the complexities of the Revolutionary War, the creation of the Constitution, and the birth of American finance. Yes, we'll watch key scenes from Hamilton, but this course is your chance to become a history buff, not just a fan!

Beginners Japanese (BJAP4)

Dive into a new language with Beginner Japanese! Learn the basics such as greetings, phrases and build the foundations for conversation in Japanese.

Beginners Korean (BKOR4)

Unlock the world of K-Pop, K-dramas, and Korean culture with our Beginner's Korean course! Learn the basics of Hangul (the Korean alphabet), master essential greetings and phrases, and build a foundation for conversation. No prior experience needed! This interactive course will have you saying ""안녕하세요!"" (Hello!) in no time.

Celebrity Studies (CSTU4)

Celebrity Studies is a DEEP option for students interested in thinking about the world of celebrity, stardom and fame. We will look at well-known people and their lives & projects, and apply those findings to ourselves and maybe even discover new ways of critically thinking about the world we live in.

Diamond Painting (DPAN4)

There is a charge of $15 for this course.
A mix between paint by numbers and cross stitch, diamond painting has emerged in the last few years as a way to create 'masterpieces' by following a printed canvas and placing beads. This is a quiet, independent and reflective craft, where accuracy and organisation will lead to success. There is a $15 charge for the kit.

Electrical Wiring (ELWI4)

Want to understand the magic behind your gadgets? This DEEP dives into the world of electrical wiring. Learn the basics of how houses are powered, explore different electrical components, and get a head start in physics if that is your interest.

Hour of Code (HOFC4)

The Hour of Code is an introduction to computer science through fun activities and videos for learners of all skill levels. If you want to learn how to code in Scratch, JavaScript, Python and more then this DEEP is the right one for you.

Pencil Sketching (PSKE4)

Do you like sketching? Interested in learning how to create new drawings with just pencil. Come join this DEEP.

Scientific Testing (SCIT4)

If you are a year 7 or 8 science enthusiast and like testing experiments to see if they work and like modifying, then this is for you.

Sign Language (SIGN4)

Through this DEEP you will be learning the third official language of New Zealand - NZSL.

Still Life Art (STIL4)

Unlock your creativity in our 'Still Life Art' course! Designed to enhance drawing and painting skills, this course will guide students through the techniques of observing and capturing everyday objects in a new light.

Trivia (TRIV4)

Come along to Trivia DEEP to test out your general knowledge and put yourself up against others! Learn trivia from around our world and through time.

Enrichment
Enrichment courses are designed for students who have found and want to continue to grow an area of strength. Some enrichment courses require a commitment for more than one Term. Please read the course descriptions for details.
Enrichment Algebra (EALG4)

This DEEP is to develop your understanding of Year 11 Algebra. This includes evaluating expressions, writing equations, graphing functions, solving quadratics, and understanding inequalities.

Jack the Ripper (JACK4)

Jack the Ripper is the best-known name for an unidentified serial killer generally believed to have been active in the largely impoverished areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. This is a "who done it" DEEP. Learn the history of who this person was to try and solve this crime.

Advanced Chess (ACHE4)

Take your chess skills to the next level in Advanced Chess DEEP. Perfect for players who have mastered the basics. Whether you're preparing for tournaments to represent MHJC, or just looking to enhance your strategic thinking, this course will help you become a formidable player on the board.

Baking (BAKT4)

There is a charge of $35 for this course.
Do you have a sweet tooth and love to bake? Enrol in baking and learn how to make delicious cookies and cakes. Sweet treats and good eats in the kitchen! Payment for this class needs to be made before class starts. As an outcome, you will be able to take recipes home to make for your family.

Book Club (BCLU4)

Are you an avid reader? Come along to book club to share and discuss the books that you have read, and to be around other passionate readers like yourself.

Cook Island Drumming (CIDR4)

This is for students that are interested in, and wish to perform Cook Island drumming.

Creative Writing (CREW4)

Develop your creative writing skills and share your ideas with others in this DEEP. Craft captivating characters, weave suspenseful plots, and master the art of description. Whether you dream of writing fantasy epics or realistic fiction, this course provides a supportive environment to explore your voice and bring your stories to life.

Musical Theatre (THEA4)

Are you passionate about musical theatre? Come along and join this DEEP where you can discover new musicals, learn about and act out scenes from a range of shows and gain an appreciation for the famous shows you can see on Broadway and The West End. This DEEP is for all abilities - all you need is to enjoy theatre, music and a good show!

Painting (PTNG4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
If you are a keen artist and painter, or are interested in art and would like to develop your skills with a brush, join Painting DEEP.

The Philippines & Tagalog (PTAG4)

In Auckland and MHJC, we have a growing and vibrant Filipino community. This DEEP aims to let us learn more about the Filipino culture, promoting cross-cultural understanding and collaboration. We also will study basic Tagalog while gaining insights into historical, social, and artistic aspects of the Filipino culture. After all, the Philippines is a significant trading partner for New Zealand, so this will surely open more doors for our tamariki in the future such as better business relationships and opportunities.

The UFO Myth (UFOM4)

This class will examine the myth of unidentified flying objects using a critical thinking lens.

Sports
It is important that you consider all 4 Cornerstones when designing your personalised DEEP learning programme. Please make your selections from the list below remembering that you can only select up to two sports courses per term.
Beginners Football (BFOT4)

Are you a football fan? Come and enjoy a casual game of football with your friends.

Development Rugby (DRGY4)

This is for students that have been selected for Development Rugby.

Fitness - Jogging and Running (FITR4)

This is NOT a walking DEEP. This DEEP is for students that wish to improve their fitness and ability to run over longer distances. You do not have to be an advanced runner to join this DEEP, but you need to be willing to push your limits to improve each week.

Turbo Touch (TURB4)

Come and learn how to play Turbo Touch! A variation of touch rugby, this sport is played on a court. The great part about Turbo Touch is you can pass the ball forwards, sideways & backwards.

Ultimate Frisbee (UFRI4)

The perfect game to learn for the summer. A fun combination of a variety of sports such as American football, netball and basketball and played with a frisbee! Learn the basic rules and skills of this sport that is growing quickly in New Zealand. And get involved with an league in the community.

Y7 Boys Development Softball (BSOF4)

This is for students that have been pre-selected for development Softball this term, as well as other Year 7 boys that are keen and capable to play this sport.

Tuesday

Discovery
At Mission Heights we want you to explore new areas of learning so that you may discover and grow your grain of Greatness. Each discovery course may only be selected once per year.
Beginners Chess (BCHE4)

Have you watched other people play Chess, and wanted to get involved but don't know how to play? This DEEP is perfect for you! Learn the basics of Chess and test out your new skills against other players. No prior experience required!

Beginners Guitar (GUIT4)

This DEEP is for students who would like to learn to play guitar. You can also join the DEEP if you are at the early stages of playing the instrument.

Beginners Hindi (BHIN4)

Namaste! Your Hindi Journey Starts Here! Unlock the beauty of Bollywood, delicious dishes, and rich Indian culture with our Beginner's Hindi course! Learn essential greetings, basic conversation skills, and the fascinating Devanagari script. No prior knowledge needed! This interactive course will have you saying "आप कैसे हैं?" (How are you?) in no time. Fun, engaging, and perfect for anyone curious about the Hindi language!

Felting (FELT4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Unleash your creativity in our Felting DEEP course! Sculpt adorable key-rings, design vibrant jewellery, or craft cozy home décor – all through the wonder of felting. No experience needed, just bring your imagination and have a blast!

Junk Journal Creation (JJCR4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Craft Your Chaos! Unleash your inner artist in our Junk Journal Creation class. Transform everyday odds and ends – paper scraps, fabric snippets, vintage treasures – into a one-of-a-kind journal bursting with personality. Learn basic bookbinding techniques, collage secrets, and embellishment magic. This is more than a notebook – it's a masterpiece waiting to be made!

Mahjong (MAHJ4)

In this DEEP, you will learn how to play mahjong, one of Chinese people’s favourite pastimes. You will learn the basic strategies on how to play mahjong through attacking and defending from other players and have fun playing against each other.

Paper Quilling (PQUI4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Quilling is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is rolled, looped, curled, twisted, and otherwise manipulated to create shapes that make up designs to decorate greetings cards, pictures, boxes, eggs, and to make models, jewelry, mobiles, etc. Come along and join this DEEP session to learn more about this ART form.

Tangram & Brain Gym (TANG4)

Want to improve your spatial reasoning and critical thinking skills? Learn a variety of fun games and/or mind-boggling brain exercises. Some are pure fun and laughter, while some are competitive and challenging. But ALL are bound to make your brain healthier and more powerful.

Word and Number Games (RUMM4)

Come and discover new games such as Rummy in this DEEP. If you enjoy playing games that require strategising and problem solving, you will be in your element.

Wordle and Word Games (WORD4)

Do you enjoy Wordle, Scrabble, Bananagrams or any other games that involve words? Or do you want to expand your vocabulary in a fun way? Join this DEEP and see how many new and different words you can learn through these games!

Year 7/8 Boys Puberty (ONLY Year 7/8 boys) (PUJB4)

Are you curious about what happens to your body as you enter puberty? This DEEP will help you understand the physical, emotional, and social changes that your body is going through. Have all your questions answered, and without any girls!

Numeracy Certificate Support (NCER4)

This DEEP is for anybody that would like additional time and support to complete further stages of the MHJC Numeracy Certificate.

Science Badges (SCIB4)

There is a charge of $6 for this course.
Allows students to gain science badges. There is a cost of $6 per badge + pp. An opportunity for enrichment of sciences in the real world. They will need to be adept at communicating in Science - suits gifted learners

Book In A Bag (BIBA4)

This DEEP combines reading, artwork, creative thinking and a bit of oral language! - students select a "quick read" book - then design a bag to reflect the story. Students fill the bag with items from the story - we end with a celebration of show and tell and sharing key ideas, teachings and learning from the story!

Eco Warrior (ECOW4)

Are you concerned about climate change and our environment? Would you like to learn about protecting our planet and becoming a change maker and making a positive difference to our school, community, city, country and planet? In this DEEP we will look at recycling, pest control, plant protection and learning about positive ways to make a difference to where we live. You will have the opportunity to be empowered to create ideas to make a positive change. This DEEP will also involve the current Enviro Council students and if you are passionate and contribute to this DEEP you will have an opportunity to join this School Council. This DEEP may involve some small field trips. We need a dedicated team to move us in the right direction. Please only apply if you think this DEEP suits your passion for the environment.

Kapa Haka (KAPA4)

You will look and learn the different forms of performing arts that are involved with kapa haka and have a better understanding of the items performed on the stage eg: haka, moteatea, waiata tira, poi, waiata aringa. You will be working towards performing at events both within and outside of school

MIT App Inventor (MITA4)

You will need a Windows or Mac for this DEEP. MIT App Inventor is a visual programming environment that allows you to build fully functional apps for smartphones and tablets. You will be able to use blocks-based coding programs. So, if you want to move from technology consumption to technology creation then this DEEP is the right one for you.

Science and Supernatural (SCIS4)

We will evaluate claims of the supernatural and paranormal within a framework of mainstream science and critical thinking. Topics will range from claims of demonic possession to reincarnation.

Sports
It is important that you consider all 4 Cornerstones when designing your personalised DEEP learning programme. Please make your selections from the list below remembering that you can only select up to two sports courses per term.
Advanced Football (AFOT4)

This is a course for our school sports team members. Boots and shin pads are required. In this course you will be specifically training to support the needs and demands of your chosen sport. This DEEP will extend your capacity to express yourself physically and mentally at a high level of sports performance. This is an Enrichment DEEP course and will involve physical challenges that will push the body.

Advanced Running (RUNT4)

This is open to capable students who are wanting to improve their distance running and overall fitness. You need to be able to run 2km in order to select this DEEP. Finally, you need the internal motivation to develop a personalised distance running goal and you will then spend the term working towards achieving this.

Badminton (BADB4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Are you interested in Badminton? Then this is for you! Come and develop your skills, learn the game, and perfect your shot! Skills will the learned through playing singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Opportunities to move further on to tournament level to represent the school are possible.

Beginners Netball (BNET4)

This DEEP course is for students who already have some skills in netball, but would like to benefit from regular training or would like to learn the skills to play netball.

Martial Arts and Self Defence (MASD4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
In this DEEP you will learn the skills and art of Self Defence through Martial Arts.

Outdoor Ed for Beginners (OEFB4)

Basic skills and knowledge needed to enjoy adventures outdoors. Depending on students' interests, topics might include weather, first aid, navigation, camp craft (cooking, equipment, survival), biking, trip planning, exploring NZ.

Sports Fruit Salad (SFSA4)

Are you a keen sports and games player? This DEEP will focus on recreation games and sports, looking into a new sport every week!

Yoga and Pilates (YOGA4)

A requirement for this class is that you bring your own mat. Ready to try something different that will make you feel calmer, more focused, and stronger? We will be practising postures that will test your mental and physical strength and flexibility, along with breathing exercises and meditation which will help centre and ground your body, mind and spirit.

Alphabet Stew - Cartoon Drawing (ALPH4)

The perfect How-To-Draw-Cartoons for beginners! Learn how to draw wacky cartoons from every letter of the alphabet.

Beginners Afrikaans (BAFR4)

Afrikaans is one of the many languages spoken in South Africa. If you would like to learn to speak some basic Afrikaans while having fun... then this class is for you. From introducing yourself, to learning words, phrases and sentences. Come and join the fun while learning to speak a new language!

Beginners German (BGER4)

If you're ready for another language challenge, why not try German? This is a basic beginners class for those who don't know any German at all. You will learn a little about Germany, and basics in the German language.

Cartoon Drawing (CDRW4)

Learn or practice your cartoon drawing through this DEEP. Practice your technique and look at different drawings for inspiration.

Clay Creations (CLCR4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
This class would combine clay crafting with food design. Students would be taught techniques of using polymer clay to create realistic looking miniature food. These can be turned into jewellery as a great gift idea. A small fee to cover the cost of materials would apply.

Garden to Table (GART4)

Are you keen on making your own garden. In this deep you will be able to grow your own vegetables such as lettuce, carrots, kale etc. You will learn the basic skills of gardening. Importance of nature and seasons. Nutrition and health.

Induction (INDU4)

This DEEP is ONLY for all students that are new to the school this term.

Mahjong (MAHJ4)

In this DEEP, you will learn how to play mahjong, one of Chinese people’s favourite pastimes. You will learn the basic strategies on how to play mahjong through attacking and defending from other players and have fun playing against each other.

Mindful Walking (WALK4)

De-stress and reconnect with nature in Mindful Walking DEEP. Learn simple techniques to transform your daily walks into calming journeys. Explore your local environment with fresh eyes, appreciate the sights and sounds, and find peace in the present moment. Boost focus, reduce anxiety, and return to class feeling refreshed and ready to learn! Lace up your shoes and join us for a walk on the mindful side.

Mysterious Monsters (MYMO4)

"This course will explore this history and psychology behind sightings of mysterious creatures around the world, from Bigfoot and Mothman to the Loch Ness Monster. New Zealand also has has its fair share of mystery creatures from the patupaiarehe (tiny fairy beings from Maori folklore) to sightings of the ‘Coromandel Man’ (New Zealand’s Bigfoot), big cat reports and sightings of giant alligators in the Waikato River during the latter 1800s. What evidence is there to support the existence of these mystery creatures. THIS IS A COURSE IN CRITICAL THINKING AND RULES OF EVIDENCE. It is not a course in why these creatures exist - instead it asks the question: 'Why do so many people believe in monsters in the absence of compelling scientific evidence?'

Robotics (ROBO4)

Learning the science, technology, and computer programming that makes today's greatest robots. From the little to the large you will begin to learn how these amazing systems are developed right from the ground up.

STOP Motion Animation (STOP4)

Are you interested in animation? Through this course you will be using the Stop motion program to create animation movies. You will be required by the teacher to use your phones or other relevant devices.

Technical Design and Drawing (TDES4)

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of technical drawing Learn how to create accurate and detailed designs for architecture, engineering, and product development. Perfect for aspiring designers, architects, and engineers who want to develop the skills needed to bring their ideas to life.

Whānau Art (WART4)

Have the opportunity to come and make some art for your central Whānau space. There will be opportunities for independent and group tasks throughout the term and lots of different media.

World Geography (WGEO4)

Travel the globe without leaving the classroom in this DEEP. Designed to improve understanding of the world we live in, this course will explore continents, countries, and cultures through engaging activities. Students gain a deeper appreciation for the planet's diversity. Perfect for young explorers looking to expand their global knowledge and awareness!

Jazz Band (JAZZ4)

Jazz Band in Term Four is ONLY for capable musicians that have been invited to join - you can only select this DEEP if you can show your Learning Advisor the email invitation you received. Otherwise, you will have a DEEP gap.

Life Skills (LSKI4)

DO NOT SELECT THIS DEEP - if you do, you will have a DEEP gap. It is for pre-selected students ONLY.

Maths Problem Solving (MPRS4)

Level up your problem-solving skills, think outside the box and conquer tricky word problems, fractions, decimals, algebra, and more! Boost your confidence and gain a deeper understanding of math through fun activities, games, and real-world applications.

MHJC Dance Troupe (DANT4)

Participate in dance workshops where we explore different styles of dance and prepare for upcoming dance competitions next year.

Wellbeing - Puzzles and Sketching (WPSK4)

This course is for students that need a quiet space.

Bike Ambassador (BIKE4)

This DEEP is for ONLY for pre-selected students that have been selected as Bike Ambassadors. MHJC with MHP has a state of the art bike track and bike pump track, which is situated on the bottom of our field. We are aiming to increase the amount of efficient and safe bike riders in both schools and to further this with an escalation in the amount of students and community members using bikes as a safe and viable form of transport. With this bike track and school wide emphasis on biking we are hopeful of the upsurge in bike riders MHJC is looking to develop student bike ambassadors to assist with this school wide goal. The MHJC Bike Ambassador is a strong Leadership role with the responsibility of promoting biking to our community and ensuring that others are safe and making this activity fun. The other role involves supervising the bike track users and ensuring everyone's safety. You need to be a competent and experienced bike rider and willing to learn new skills and want to be a responsible leader. This DEEP is mainly practical based.

Chess Club (CHES4)

Are you wanting to learn how to play Chess or have a friendly game of Chess with your friends? In this DEEP you will do just that. You will learn the strategy and tactics behind the game and master the different moves of play.

International Dances (INTD4)

Get ready to jet-set (without leaving the dance floor)! Our International Dances course is your chance to explore the rhythm and culture of different countries through movement. This fun and inclusive DEEP is perfect for beginners who want to celebrate diversity and discover the joy of dance from all over the world.

Origami (ORIG4)

There is a charge of $10 for this course.
Do you like getting creative with your hands? If so, come to this DEEP and learn how to make lanterns, origami, paper sculpturing, kites, and so on.

Sāsā (SASA4)

Join our Sāsā class and learn the powerful movements and rhythmic chants of this traditional dance. Explore Samoan culture, build confidence, and prepare to showcase your skills! No prior experience necessary – just bring your energy and be ready to celebrate Samoan heritage!

Word Power (WPOW4)

Increase your word power by completing crosswords, mix and match games for words and their meanings, word finds and enter a Spelling Bee.

Sports

Advanced Cricket (ACRI4)

You MUST have hard-ball cricket gear (helmet, pads) and be pre-selected to participate in this DEEP.

Advanced High Jump (JUMP4)

This course is for pre-selected students that are taking part in competitive High Jump.

Advanced Touch Rugby (ATRG4)

This is for students that have been selected for Touch Rugby.
